VR Days Impressions: So I tried the X, the +, the XTAL, and Varjo

The X:
Not the final version, without comfort kit and rubberized housing.
With a 2080, the resolution if outstanding, native is a thing, sharper than anything else.
The SDE is negligible, but you still can see it if you focus on it, better than anything else I’ve tried.
Unfortunately there was a problem with the cable and the picture was very dark, almost like the 120Hz mode on 5K+. And the games crashed a few times. The colors were muted and brightness very low, I’ll come back tomorrow to try it with a good cable. The cable was glued or bad attached to the headset.
I tried it with DCS and Pavlov.
Not problems with refresh rate, and distortions much better than 5K+ and XR that I own.

The +:
Same SDE but not as sharp as the X, It was very noticeable in the cockpit and textures. But it’s great, much better than 5K+.
I tried it with DCS and The Blue.
The comfort kit is great, very comfortable, I put it, set my Ipd, and everything looks great.
I didn’t heard anything, maybe the volume was very low or the speakers are not good at all. But thumbs up for the comfort kit.
Materials, coating and housing; it’s great, it definitively looks and feels premium.
The blacks were bad imho, I think worst than 5K+, specially in The Blue, in the abyss, and in the steam vr loading page. I know very well these two scenes on my 5K+, maybe the brightness was too high in Pitool.

XTAL:
Not very impressed. I was in a bright room. Good SDE, good brightness and colors, but I didn’t like the FOV, specially the vertical, very high cushion in the center. At the beginning I had double vision, after automatic calibration it was better but it didn’t feel right at all. Much better the 8K X and the + imo

Varjo:
With a flight simulator, outstanding resolution at the center. At the beginning I could see clearly the difference between the two screens but after few minutes the difference was not apparent anymore.
Very small FOV.

Overall I’m really impressed with the X, I hope I’ll can try it tomorrow with a better cable, and very impressed with the comfort kit and new housings as well.

Thanks for the info, it’s nice to know the distortions has improved I hope they fix the issues by tomorrow so we can hear your opinion on colors and brightness.

You’re welcome, it’s s pleasure!

Yes, Martin told me it will be fixed tomorrow, hopefully!

I’ve to say that I see distortions on the 5K+ and Xr, but they don’t bother me a lot, maybe I’m used to them, maybe my face shape fits well, or maybe I just ignore them.
But I’ve seen an improvement here, with normal FOV. They didn’t show the big one.

In the live stream @SweViver mentioned something about a driver issue. Pretty sure it was the audio drivers.

An X, a +, a XTAL, and a Varjo walked into a bar…

Sounds about like me (8K), there’s a bit of geometry squashing as objects move to the side when I turn my head but I really only see it when I focus on it. I guess I have that face shape as well or maybe it’s just inconsistency in the assembly that makes some headsets worse than others.

For me it depends on how well the 8K sits on my face with the original padding and also the PiTool render setting. I can tune it so it is minimal geometry squashing on the Large FOV edges with not to much trouble.

Pity they still don’t have a final version of the 8K-X to demo.

Tomorrow will be Pimax 3 Day

Absolutely! Adjusting the headset vertically a little to make vertical lines not “lean” when looking up or down is the most important to me. I’ve not been able to eliminate the horizontal squash entirely though.

What do you mean?
202020

Yes it’s possible, the volume was very low and these speakers are not made for places like VRDays with all the ambient sound that was there

Broken cable made it dark? Is that even possible? Also you said the black floor was worse than the 5K? Not sounding too good

Yeah I think that’s strange too, but the brightness on the + was ok. If they use the same panels the brightness should be the same on both.
Or maybe the brightness on the + was set very high on Pitool, that would explain the greyish blacks on the 8K+

Unfortunately you never know for certain untill you try them in your own time. The distortion were better though. Thats a good thing!

Sucks the headset has issues, here’s hoping people don’t take it that that’s the final version. Lots of anti-pimax “journalists” out there that would love to jump on any chance to discredit them. (Heany) But at the same time I’m disappointed pimax is still bringing broken headsets to shows. This has given them a bad name for years now.

Edit: I know this is an engineering sample that has probably been through the wringer but pimax…really…needs to start thinking about their public image more.

Indeed above off ear design not made with concept of keeping environmental noises out.

I don’t understand why they don’t bring at least a few known good spares (of everything, including cables)…
