Geometric distortion (warping) and chromatic aberration
Doesn’t sound great
Always strange how companies claim they are fixing these issues with an updated distortion profile, but thinking this has been in development for several years, did no one at the company notice?
And the only reason the VR-1 looks sharper is because it’s Nvidias software. Surely Pimax can further optimise the Crystal to take advantage of the same Nvidia tools? Back alky they should look the same.
We’re in the second half of May, still no Somnium Connect or release date while while Pimax release the Crystal Light.
It’s kinda crazy how all these companies like Varjo, VRgineers Apple and now Somnium find enough people to make VR worth investing in.
As much as I don’t like Meta or Zucks the thought of the Quest Pro 2 has me intrigued.
I’m putting money on DJI releasing a VR headset in the next 5-10 years and they have a level of expertise that now rivals Sony.
Somnium are too small, too slow and too optimistic to get products out at prices, schedules and with technology that can beat rivals. DJI is becoming the Nvidia of the GPU world and their current technology with FPV drones already covers a lot of ground which VR covers.
This VR-1 is not a money maker and from what Art says Hypervision headsets are years away leaving the door wide open for even small startup to come into the market. I’m not sure if Art from Hypervision is regretting selling part of his company to Somnium as it seems he had the smarts to deliver a headset quicker on his own.
Did some one say Palmer Luckey is coming back to the VR scene? Haha.
Supposedly the “only return if unused” thing is to protect them from people abusing the headset and returning it. Someone asked about this and Artur said it would be case-by-case basis, ie if it’s in good condition they’ll take it back.
Pimax need to come to an agreement with Almalence for licensing their digital lens software to Crystal users.
Made a considerable difference to image sharpness and reduced chromatic aberration in my unit, Pimax had considerable advantage with this last year but unfortunately the trial finished
I’m surprised that they kept some of the critical voices, like that guy who said he saw distortion. Which of course is a honest thing to do so kudo’s for them. I totally believe it’s super clear but man after having seen the AVP I can’t go back to headsets that have things like distortion. That’s what I love so much about the AVP, they just really nailed it. But of course it’s not a gamer’s headset so flightsimmers most likely will be better off with for example a VR1. But for me, no way I’ll ever buy a headset with aspheric lenses ever again.
