MRTV's HP Reverb G2 through the lens video

The tundra labs dongles are your best bet. at 50 dollars total, you are not going to beat that.

In terms of internals, there’s no cheapo china stuff in there. From my research, multiple IC’s are used, Nordic nRF52832-QFAA, Nordic nRF24LU1 etc. depending on where you buy. None of what I’ve seen are bad, Nordic semiconductor makes good stuff. The virtualbuilds dongle has a PCB antennae and I can speak to it’s solid range, not sure about others.

Oh and I just looked at MRTV’s video, not sure why he calibrates using both controllers, it’s just syncing the playspaces, so all he’s doing when he does the right one after the left is replacing the offset he just set with the left controller with the right controller. If done right they should be identical, so no change in the playspace.

Well, +shipping costs we’re still at 66$. But it is indeed cheaper than other solutions so far.
I just wished that it would be cheaper. I’m afraid to check for other solutions though (other than these original looking ones) since they may differ in range a lot.

Thanks! ordered
Imho he should have added that somehow to the video, asked around, since there are obviously experienced people like you with very helpful information.
I think that considering that this procedure comes with a pricetag of 100$ it shouild have been a more prominent statement than only leaving a link. No criticsism here just a thought.
Anyways, thanks for pointing me to tundralabs. I mean saving 33% is something and all it took was to ask around here.

MRTV had his buddy Dennis of VR Legion over and took both preproduction models (G2 and 8kX) and a couple of other HMDs for a spin for over 2 hours.
All in german though…
Seb was quite diplomatic compared to what Dennis had to say after the direct comparison, as he really did not like the 8kX and 8k+
Basically for the same reasons like Seb but he seemed even more underwhelmed and had numereous concerns.
He also stated that if somebody feels the need for going bigger FOV Artisan may be the best to go, but without buying from china directly. (I recently had my issues with buying from china and I completely agree)
On the other hand Dennis went bananas over the G2 and can’t wait to have his own as he was completely blown away, which he repeatly stated.
Just a heads up…
For anyone that is interested may try to use youtube translation.

There have been enough positive impressions from people who have gotten the 8KX so far that any underwhelmed impressions of Seb’s preproduction unit by other users really don’t mean much to me at this point. I’m sure the G2 will be a good headset with it’s own compromises just like I’m sure the 8KX is also.

A sensible and measured conclusion. :+1:

that why i am gonne order the hp reverb G2 too, colors and sharpnes and no mura are important for me… The 8kplus that i had was not good in the color department and had mura and distortion…And i think my ordered 8kx will be the same…

Thank you for the rundown on the clip I was very curious what he thought of the two HMD’s.

Yes only concern is that after the G2 display honeymoon I may well begin to notice the narrower fov shortcoming

I think if your only using one HMD and not doing A to B comparisons you’ll be fine. I have got used to a Cosmos and enjoy wireless and that’s even smaller.

until there is a g1 vs g2 Through the Lens video with same video settings used shown, I will not be so easily convinced.

It’s very hard to picture how ‘GOOD’ the color is, and how its not like a LCD almost like OLED, just by listening and no point of reference to compare it to.

Yeah, I have ordered the G2 too because the specs are interesting, and if the 8KX is too fiddly to use on a day2day level or has some kind of annoying kinks it may be the better alternative after all. And in addition Pimax drove me into buying the Index in Spring-time so let‘s see how the three perform.
I just hope I will receive the 8KX in time, the G2 is scheduled for September or early October.

This slightly uncomfortable convergence issue I had with the 5K+ and the 8K is likely to resurface for me, because there were not many who complained about it last time around so they surely will not have addressed & resolved it.

Obviously I would love for the 8KX to beat the others because it offers not only the FoV but also more graphical performance of the games with the introduction of DFR.

But the good news is that I will should come out of this comparison with a good headset in any case (though I am hoping it‘s not the Index because that is fine but not a leap forward due to its limited resolution).

Well if you had firsthand issues with the 8k+ in those departments then chances are good that you would have those same issues with 8KX so it makes sense why you would lean towards the G2 in that case. That makes a lot more sense than making the decision because of the impressions from someone using Seb’s unit which totally go against the impressions from multiple people on this forum who have the final unit in hand.

I personally didn’t have a problem with those issues on my 5k+ so I don’t expect to have them on the 8KX either. The colors weren’t noticeably worse than any other LCD headset that I tried and I never noticed any mura with it. I could see distortion in the far edges on normal FOV if I strained my eyes to look in the far corners for it but I didn’t do that in the course of normal gameplay so it was a non-issue. The one thing that I missed since moving to the Index has been that great FOV. While the index FOV is ok, it is still no where as good as what I had on the 5k+. Getting the improved clarity and sharpness along with the great FOV back in the 8KX sounds like a great upgrade for me. The only step back is going to be in the sound but hopefully the DMAS will be available soon to take care of that problem.

Yeah, it must be the pre-production unit is faulty or something must be wrong with my setup, no doubt about it!

Hi Seb. Just out of curiosity did you find the colours any better on the 8k plus unit verses the x you tested that is a final production model?
