MRTV's HP Reverb G2 through the lens video

I already no longer like the FOV of my Index. Feels too restrictive.

I like the idea of the screen quality and I do trust Sebastian’s opinion. The footage does look impressive. I have had a few wmr devices and they are not without issues. I know I would miss the index controllers and the tracking. The wmr tracking isn’t bad at all but it’s not the same trust me. Watching your controller float away because you’ve had it down by your side for too long is not a rare occurrence. For reference I’ve had a Hp Vr1000 a Samsung odyssey and a Reverb G1.

Come on Sebastian we all know the only reason you’re holding out is to force Pimax to send you a second unit. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I don’t see how two 8KX units can look any different unless the lenses or the panels changed. Pimax are just holding out because they’re scared of this comparison and the impact it might have on people cancelling their orders.

I’m not buying either so I can sit back and enjoy the ride. :innocent: :+1:

Pimaxusa stated quite a few changes including the main board. I think it’s really quite different HMD now. Below from Pimaxusa…

The new chipset is actually 2 generations newer which improves the image processing (and has a lot more upside for firmware updates).

The cable went through a lot of improvements and the signal to noise ratio is much better. All sorts of other electrical improvements over the ces protos, one was heat dissipation which on your prototype could degrade the visuals during use.

The consistency of the panels and lenses went through an extra cycle too.

Adds up to roughly 4.5 months additional engineering over the CES version.

@mixedrealityTV if we can get some Assetto through the lens footage, all the sim guys would really appreciate it!

If you look at all the GPU sold over the years from all different manufacturers there’s hardly any difference in image quality. They all look 99% the same. So I’m skeptical to see how Pimax can make a radical change to the same HMD in a few months that would suggest there’s going to be any visable difference when the two overriding factors are exactly the same.

Honestly I doubt there are much visible differences. But just like Sebastian said, everybody will just get angry.

Haha, if that was my intention than a better strategy might be to simply post that through the lens video now and say: “Let’s see if the final unit is any better!!!” :wink: But that would just be a terrible and not a very sustainable way of working together. :slight_smile:

Very true. Pimax can only run for so long.

Besides through the lens videos only ever take one eye into account, they never show convergence or all the other offending anomalies associated with stereoscopic image reproduction that can give you eye strain.

Still fun times and I look forward to your next videos.

I wonder if Pimax have sourced a G2 yet for their own comparisons…???

That does this consistency even mean? Until now each panel or lens was different? I’ll be surprised if they’ve changed the lenses at all without saying anything after years of using them.

If Pimax 8K-X screen quality on ‘potato setting’ (closest to G2?) with a native screen resolution of 3840×2160 per-eye, is beaten by a Reverb G2 with a lower screen resolution of 2160 x 2160 per eye, then HP have developed a cost effective panel technology no one should be upset about, moreover, happy the impossible has been achieved.

It would be good for us all that your claim of G2 superiority is accurate, as prices from competitors would either then fall or competition would simply all increase in 2021 to 4K per eye which is equally good for VR enthusiasts as then top end manufacturers would begin resesrch into producing even higher panel resolutions by late 2022/2024 once an Nvidia 4080/5080 Ti or AMD RDNA3/4 based GPU’s are able to run 8K per eye.

Imagine a VR headset screen 2x higher pixels per eye than 4K (8K) possible in maybe 4 years running on one GPU, all aided by real competition and on something superior to OLED like MicroLED instead of low persistance LCD.

This possibility of consumers pushing manufacturers to utilise the best possible but equally cost effective solution is why so many of us backed the mostly unheard of Pimax, as we knew the 8K Wide FOV idea of 2017 at the time was unique and the future 8K-X sounded frankly absurd.

If you genuinely can prove a WMR VR headset beats an 8K-X, then this is great news for the future for those who dream about experiencing a ‘Virtual Reality’, within their lifetime as in another 30 years from now, VR/AR might be indistinguishable from real life and this would never have been achieved without the restless interest and demand of consumers.

If you want to compare them Potato on 8kX’s native res for that mode is the res value you want to compare to the G2.

Is 8kX Potato FoV mode Res = to, higher than, or Lower to; HP G2 res.

As the 8kX full panel is spread across 160° Wide FoV you need to see how much Resolution is available in potato mode.

I haven’t tried the new RoV tool with the Potato mode, but I always see that when you lower a FOV level, a Pimax headset loses 20 degrees of horizontal FOV.
LARGE = 160°.
NORMAL = 140º
SMALL = 120º
POTATO = 100º?
It should be a fairly similar FOV to Reverb G2’s FOV, BUT Reverb G2’s lenses are designed to take advantage of that FOV and Pimax’s are not.
I think it’s quite possible that G2 looks better than Pimax with the Potato mode and with 90 fps.

Your probably right but we will have to wait and see…I had a G1 and while the picture quality was ok it wasn’t amazing. I am hoping for better on the 8KX.

Wait 5K+ is better than G2

I’m not sure myself maybe pimaxusa can elaborate exactly what this means?

Okay, this is weird. I searched for Reverb G2 on CDW.ca and found this link:
https://www.cdw.ca/product/hp-reverb-vr-vr3000-g2-headset-u.s/6157901?enkwrd=reverb+g2

It lets me add a Canadian address but they charge $1,175.99 CAD which is about $870 USD. Meanwhile in U.S is only $600 USD so a markup of $270 USD. But what’s weird is it says available in 3 to 6 business days. Is this some early access version?

I just clicked and it says 403 forbidden - thats not an official supplier pre-order site to maybe just scalping

Do you live in Canada? It loads just fine for me.

Hi there,

I have asked the HP team about Canadian preorders and they are telling me it is still work in progress. So I suppose that is some early access page that is not meant for public consumption.
