MRTV's HP Reverb G2 through the lens video

No they have different panels

Dear all! Greetings from a little vacation I am taking! Hope you are all doing well!

For the 8K X, I did take through the lens video with the same cam in 4k,but they are not very flattering comparing them to the G2 ones. Therefore I did not post them. In case the final 8K X really is so much better, it would be unfair to post that video.

For the affiliate link for the G2, absolutely! Totally stand for this! I did not recommend the G2 because of the affiliate link, but I put the affiliate link because I totally believe in the product. You will see once you get it. And by the way, whenever I do affiliate or take any money, I do it completely transparent instead of hiding affiliate links. Cheers!

That’s why we would need colorimetry tested with a probe for all competing VR headsets.

Can’t rely on users’ naked eye feedbacks to get a reliable comparison on colors or black and white levels, because it will always just be about their “perceived” colors/black-white levels.

Probes are not expensive, but need some time investment to perform the tests for every HMD reviewed.

It is risky/controversial to push (pre-orders of) a product without knowing how the final version will perform.
I’m referring to the decreased brightness of the consumer version of course.
It won’t change the good performances in other areas but still, brightness/colors is a significant characteristic of a VR headset.
Although I don’t deny this G2 seems to have some (very) strong arguments.

Even if they shipped it like it is now people would love it.

In my preview I clearly state whenever I cannot give a final assessment of something because it was a preproduction unit. But that was not so much anyways. Also I am not “pushing” for pre-orders. Based on what I saw here I wholeheartedly recommend the G2 and that’s it. That’s what I do. I check out VR hardware and tell people if I can recommend it or not.

I don’t get your point, you said consumer version should have significantly reduced brightness, right ?

As pointed by someone else this could make the colors less vivid than the version you have tested .

It could also help with black level, but this would not necessarily be a good tradeoff for all situations (better black level will help for very dark games, but with bright games the black is perceived as the difference between bright and dark areas, and that difference may be worst with a decreased brightness = less contrast).

Give us a ball part comparison, the visual quality in the centre of the image between g2 and 8kx preproduction unit, in the scale of 10, g2 being 10, where is 8kx?

In your preview of 8k+ you were impressed with the visual fidelity, so since then and the g2, how much better do you feel g2 is.

Thanks

Oh yes of course people are responsible of reminding this is a pre-production unit and you clearly inform the consumer version will have a decreased brightness.

And yes you don’t explicitely push people to pre-order, but you should know a review like that will have that result (= encourage pre-orders). I would have warned people a decreased brightness in the consumer version may have a significant impact (like on the colors vibrancy), and it is then better to wait for a review of this consumer version to decide to pull the trigger or not.

Will you review this consumer version by the way ?

Hi! I dont want to make this comparison since it does not matter because according to @PimaxUSA the final 8K X units are way improved over what I have. What I can say about this comparison I said in my live AMA on Wednesday.

Guys, this was my short bathroom sitting. I am going back to my vacation. See you in a couple of days!

Yes, and I do recommend to pre-order because I am sure that this will even look better when the brightness is dialed in. Should I be totally wrong about this then people can still sell their headsets. I am sure there will be a big big market for this device come September.

Okay, I was just scolded by my wife to stop with this VR thing during our wedding anniversary trip. So see you guys!

Have a good holiday :grinning:

Mhhh, so finally you admit you “recommend” to pre-order, and also you are doing a “bet” it will be better with the final brightness :scream:

That’s precisely a risk I don’t take when I (p-)review a pre-prod unit. I just advise people to wait for reviews of the final product.

Now I hope this G2 will be as good as you expect, I may be tempted by buying one but will wait for user reviews from the final version.

Wise choice, all it will take is some sort of fall out between MRTV and HP for the headset to become not so good. Just watch his videos on the 8kX before the fall out and after the fall and you will see.

Well it worked fine for Pimax when Marcin posted those crappy shots of the Reverb against the 8KX and had them plastered all over the Pimax website. He was told several improvements were made to the reverb but didn’t attempt a second shot at it.

C’mon be reasonable here Sebastian. As an independent you should be able to do as you please. You’re kind of showing some bias by not posting them because it makes the 8KX look poor in comparison. Nothing stopping you doing some more shots if and when you get a revised 8KX is there.

Also consider who is telling you the final 8KX is better than what you have. Ofc they will say that. How much better it can’t really be a night and day difference otherwise they would have recalled your headset or offered you another one.

Uf. My IPD is 70 milimeters too.

I agree with you on that a revisit should have happened. However I don’t think Marcin ever received the fixed model.

I also agree with Seb it is better to wait for final units to really do a final assessment. Now he could likely do a rough comparison against the g1 vs his not final 8kX and might be more fair ad both have replacements.
