FS2020 VR + Pimax Discussion

Not quite the same thing, but you can shift forward in your seat to get a better look out the window with Alt-up arrow

Wow the performance is so bad. Even with my 3090 and 9900K

@SweViver - looking forward to your best settings guide!

Will do my best

Whats easy to forget is that FS2020 is a simulator and not a game. The most graphically advanced sim ever made. On top of that, its currently running on a few cores (basically 1 CPU core maxing out) with DX11. So there is a lot to be done when it comes to optimization and performance in general, especially with DX12 or Vulkan. Our 3080/3090 gpus are capable of way higher frame rates, but it won’t happen until the sim can utilise today’s very powerful multi-core CPUs.

Still, its not a bad effort for a first VR release. Especially considering the sim actually suffers from low framerates even when played on a monitor.

Thanks for all the tips. After an hour of it not detecting my headset, I realized it was looking for a WMR headset in Developer settings.

All is working great on 5k+, Small FOV, RQ 1, with PP of course. Flying VFR over London I am averaging around 34 fps, but I noticed at times it jumped to the low 50s. I started off with very conservative graphics settings to find smooth fps.

In game render scaling and terrain level both at 80. Buildings low (I will test medium later). I dropped several other things down to Low as well. But even with these conservative settings it still looks better than Xplane and runs smoother, which was what I have been wanting since I began VR.

8700k at 5ghz with 3080 Trio.

One suggestion: run your headset at a lower refresh and try to get the framerate up to half that, so Smart Smoothing can come in and make it butter smooth. On my 8K+, I’m now running it at 72hz, and just managed to get 36fps over downtown Seattle, WA, US, and damn is it nice. Of course, then I tried taking off from the airport in a snowstorm, and it struggled to hit 10fps…

I haven’t actually purchased this yet but thought I’d pipe in and remind you guys of Potato view for demanding games. It’s still significantly wider than my OG Vive (with my OG Vive set to maximum FOV by not using foam) and gives a significant boost to performance. My tests show around 20% increase in FPS over ‘Small’ and about 40% over ‘Medium’. Sticking with my 1080ti for the moment it’s become my goto setting (together with Steam SS set to 20% and adjusting Pitool up and down to gain maximum fidelity - (I find adjusting this so you GPU usage averages not much more than 80% to avoid stuttering works best). If the game is not demanding I might then play around with ‘Small’ and ‘Medium’. The increase in smoothness and lack of stuttering is so worth the drop in FOV IMO!

Hi,
I also had this “off-center” image in my 5k+ with big black box at the right border of the FOV. Doing a fresh roomsetup in order to be in the center of the Steam VR rectangle solved that.
But now I have on both sides of the FOV (normal view) a weird image what looks like double rendering.
PP is on and Valve compatability is off.

Any idea to get rid of that?

Performance is not so bad at all. I got around 45fps with RTX2080ti and R-5900x…

I wouldn’t purchage it yet for your pimax if you have an 1080TI. I have one myself and it is knowere near playable with my 8kX.
with all settings minimized and very low supersampling. It looks ultra low res and get 18FPS.
It’s dissapointing

@SweViver What do you mean by “Room Setup”?
thank’s

Also the room setup within steam VR is important…

On PiTool front page, Room Setup. Aligns the center of your game play area and floor position. Its weird its needed, but it helps correcting the FS2020 rendering

Thank you sweviver. All your guides are very helpful for this community. Mine is finally working and it is really beautiful.

If anyone uses the Microsoft Store version of FS2020 and want to manually import it into PE, the game has no exe file. But there is apparently a solution:

Create a bat file to start MFS with the FastLaunch option which looks like:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App “-FastLaunch”

Then import the .bat file in PE.

(Thanks to @hashjime on the FS2020 forums)

I ran the room setup and it finally centred the image. However, I am now looking at an image instead of been in the full 360 world. I also dont get full 6dof. Even though i can turn my head, and the image reponds in the headset, the image on my monitor stays still. if I move forwards or backward, the image in my headset moves with me. My head is ready to explode!!!

Sounds like the 6dof/lighthouse tracking got disabled in PiTool and u are running 3dof tracking (built in)? Try re-enabling it.

In pitool, tracking mode is set to lighthouse. Is there anywhere in steamVR it could have been reset when I installed the Beta?
I have noticed a strange anomoly when I’m in the steamVR settings- all of the text goes blurry when I move the cursor.

I think i will try reinstalling steamvr

Tried everything but cant get the game to recognise 6dof. just looking at a screen in VR with infinite copies above and below. Guess Im gonna have to wait for an update or fix. Everything working fine for my other games

I had the same problem. exit and re enable VR multiple times fixed it. “Ctr + tab” multiple times

So,about the black boxe and yellow screens, what works for me is to turn off the HDR setting of my monitor.

Since then, everything is fine.

Got between 30-36 FPS (i9900kx & 2080ti), pitool rendering 1.5 & PP, Steam 60%, MSFS 100%

Thanks. I’ve tried that loads of times without success so far. I’ll keep having a go at it in case I drop lucky, but you would hope there will be a fix out soon.
