Eye tracking - how?

OK, then can you name a few examples that are anywhere near the Pimax ballpark?

Steam VR on launch was afwul, constant crashes & bugs.

When Android came & Google started to develop mobile services it was so awful my login constantly didn’t work, I couldn’t switch accounts as I have many it was terrifying I didn’t expect such level of coding from Google coz before it I didn’t note any problems.

Oculus updates constantly break tracking & their sound drivers so problematic with link.

Modern software is a poor product apart of few companies.

Yeah - I was referring to the hardware. Bad software, though very annoying, can be fixed over the Internet. Hardware just as far as the firmware will allow. Suppose, for example, that the eye tracker keeps overheating with the current brightness, but will not detect eyes when the lights are dimmed - then what?

I tried with the ir directly stuck to the lens and some aluminium foil in the headset to reflect more ir light towards the eyes but I still had to have my eyes too far from the lens to make the ET worthwhile for DFR ( on normal fov ) before it registered my pupils . for other stuff it’s fine but I want to use it on 130-140 fov not 90-100 fov
is it poor ir lighting of the pupil or is the focal length of the camera set at an excessive distance , can it be changed to allow better recognition or is it just ported over from the vive pro which is only 100 fov
I even tried shamfering some of the lens away but cannot get the ir unit any closer to the pimax lens due to it’s convex shape.
maybe my next test is to make some extra ir lighting , see if that allows a closer distance .
Really hope it’s just the software

Anyone getting good tracking without requiring a super thick face cushion ?? is it my neanderthal face features lol

Its been over a week since I submitted a support ticket for the eye tracking module not working and have yet to get anything back besides a generic non answer from 7invensun. Starting to doubt its ever going to be fixed.

I’m finally going back to work after significant covid delays in 3 weeks and need to have this fixed I won’t have access to it for the next 6 months…

Ok, that’s god. Here in the Forum are some people, they got the tracker running in the meantime. Take a look…

Yes I have seen them all and there are even more people here who have not gotten it to work so there is clearly a problem.

I have to follow a routine to get it to work

Right click on aseevr icon choose devices/pimax and select embed
Then right click on the green icon and and exit
then led’s turn on and good to go

Like I said…I have seen everyone’s ā€œsolutionsā€ for getting it to work. They do not work.

Half if not more of the customers who have received the eye tracking unit can not get it to calibrate. There are issues with the software that is an undeniable fact.

7invensun is not answering any emails and Pimax have washed their hands of the problem saying its 7invensun’s issue not theirs. I have yet to even see any Pimax employees comment on the high percentage of users who can not get this thing to work.

ok im late to the ball game here. Is there any guidance on how to actually install this think into my 5k+ in a temporary way until my 8kx arrives?

also i know last week they said the firmware had issues, is it advised to do an update or no?

The more I read other people’s findings, the more I am starting to question if the Droolon 1 eye tracker will ever meet my expectations, built upon

  • the specs as published
  • the ā€˜first hand user impressions’ during Pimax Now as presented by @SweViver and @anon57422158
  • the prototype that I was able to try out in December

Could Pimax please answer: suppose I send back the eye tracker (still unopened)

  • would you refund me?
  • would you allow me to keep my $100 coupon in case future software/firmware turns the Droolon 1 into a usable piece of hardware after all and I want to re-buy it?
  • would you allow me to spend my $100 coupon in case a Droolon 2 ever will be sold?

It might work well enough with DFR ,with the on board 5k+ usb despite the lower sample rate

Got it ā€œworkingā€.

I messed around with different usb ports, and pitool settings. Not sure what the clincher was, I will narrow it down, but things I did included, more or less in this order :

  • Mess around with the ports in USBTreeView
  • Connect the tracker direct to PC USB 3.0 (recognised, no calibration)
  • Connect the tracker to PC via 5m active USB2 cable.(recognised, no calibration)
  • Connect the tracker to the HMD using another USB C cable (recognised, no calibration)
  • Quit, reconnnect the tracker software sevral times and mess around with it
  • Change to Small FOV in PiTool
  • Change to 90 Hz in PiTool (was also 90 when I tried before but I had been playing at 144 meanwhile and so it was 144 for the start of this troubleshooting session)
  • Restarted steam, eye tracker software, etc.,
  • Suddenly it worked, the IR came on and it could be calibrated!

It seems to also work fine again now after turning off / turning back on the HMD once.

Initial impressions of DFR, did not spend long in each and did not tweak calibration much, and only looked at the images, not the FPS . :

  • Rec Room - aggressive and balanced - didn’t seem to work at all or worked very well. Tried twice
  • The Forest - aggressive and balanced - Worked but seems to behave oddly on Y axis. Top or bottom did not seem to ā€œdepixelatieā€ properly when looking up or down. Perhaps need better calibration.
  • Elite - balanced - worked but was distracting with some settings. I messed about with some in game settings and it got much better. HOWEVER seems like a very bad fit for text. Only went in to first menu screen.
  • NMS aggressive and balanced - - Did not seem to work or worked very well. Was the first I tried though so maybe something did not apply properly
  • Alyx - Balanced - Worked really well. First menu only. I could see the higher res load when I looked around with quite large eye movements but the effect was smooth and I think I would very quickly get used to it.
