Eye tracking - how?

Yeah well I don’t know …

  • It’s not working at all with the firmware that it was shipped with;
  • Seems to generate a lot of heat;
  • They are thinking of reducing the infrared to 1/3rd of its current setting;
  • Seems not to be working with thin face foam, which I think is what was shipped with the Comfort Kits already out;
  • Needs a hole to be cut in the DP already out;
  • Anything else I missed

Seems kind of rushed out to me. The sad thing is, I was able to play test it in December last year, and it seemed to work as intended back then. Apparently, a lot has happened since then - but nothing good.

Modern development is usually done before a product is sold to the public, not after.

However the photos above are of bright white lights.

The camera picks up IR light differently from our eyes, in person the lights are a dull red color when turned on.

Yeah just to agree with this ^ if you point your phone camera at a tv remote when it is activated you will see similar.

that is not what you see though. for the naked eye it’s looks like a dim red.

edit:… and i really should read the rest of the posts before answering.

So I just had mine arrive. Will be a few hours until I can test it but I installed it. My observations :

  • I agree the fixtures / magnets should be stronger and more secure.
  • I slightly damaged my HMD (“old” backer 5K+) removing the “ruggardised” 3d printed DAS top adapter. Be careful. (obv not pimax’s fault).
  • I removed the protective film and had some bubbles remaining. It looked like a layer of glue or something remained. I was going to complain. But no - There was another protective film on the other side :laughing:

Other than that all looks good so far. No real issues with leads / fitting / etc. in the 5K+.

The sensitivity is not sufficient imo , doubt they will make it dimmer
software needs more tuning so that it can detect eye movement when its closer to the eyes, incidentally I can confirm that it works with rimless reading glasses.
sticking the device directly onto the lens with double sided tape also helped a lot

I found that I needed to use the sticky tape to keep the metal base rings in place because the way they showed in the video is simply not secure enough.

Beware you only get one shot at this!!!
Test the fit a few time before pealing the protection off the sticky tape.

And yeah it would have been nice with stronger magnets.

Yeah but I have an 8Kx coming so I am leaving that for now.

oh so you didn’t use the base plate ring things?

It works much better if you don’t bother with thw metal brackets and use some weakish double sided tape , the glass is not noticeable so no reason to remove it , just don’t start the ET software

I did at first but it steals a lot of camera - eye distance

yeah, it sounds like a good idea, i wish i had thought of it

I was thinking that because of the space between the eyetracer glass and the lens it might be possible to put eyeglass llenses in there, with a 3d printed adapter or some such. because I don’t see a way to mount glasses with the tracker as it is now

I think that’s what’s supposed to happen. Pimax said they would be working with some VR prescription company to do that but have yet to release a info about it since. Now the ET has shipped and still nothing!

Now that I’ve pulled the trackers out of the headset again, because lets admit it, it gets a bit warm and there’s nothing immediate i need them for I noticed some small notches on the inside that might be for mounting prescription lenses. I mean I’m not sure but… maybe.

OK I have tried to set up for an hour or so now, my experience :

  • Struggled to get it recognised at all
  • Tried putting direct to PC, got recognised, correct device.
  • Then put back in HMD, no luck at first but
  • After trying sevral USB ports got it recognised, but the HMD not recognised.
  • Took it out again, got HMD working again.
  • Then plugged it in while HMD recognised. Both were seen!
  • Opened Pitool, downloaded software, tried to calibrate.
  • Green dots appeared for a second or so in centres of squares, then vanished. No red dots. Not sure what was supposed to happen, but not this I guess.
  • Tried rebooting etc. Droolon recognised, not HMD.
  • Tried several cables, ports etc. Can’t get it recognised at the same time as HMD.

Personally to me it feels like a power + usb issue, but what do I know.

I may try again, especially if any updates, but I may just wait for the 8Kx now instead.
