@Davobkk
In my opinion the black levels and colors are good in the Index, very tolerable at least. Compared to my 5k+ way better.
Iām not sure if my 5k+ unit is defective though (yellowish glow)

Try it side by side, the index has much better colors than the 5k+. Thereās also a brightness setting in the steamvr settings room (so inside your hmd), although I like the default setting.
But yeah, sure, LCD will never be OLED.
Thanks just tried that but itās still grey wall IMO. Dont get me wrong though this is a great HMD. Lighthouse 2.0 is the business
It will never be OLED black. To me personally colors are not a problem on the index (where I did see them als problematic on the 5k+, really taking the fun out of some games), I find black dark enough in the index. But thatās just me and I know youāre a huge ED fan so itās probably more of a factor to you.
The one thing Iād personally like to have improved is the FoV, to me thatās the biggest downside of the index.
Yeah, thatās not an option for me.
It really would come down to no 7meter+ cable option, no 8KX for me. If I can make that work somehow, iāll get one. Iād even be happy to pay good money (extra) for a working cable. But 7 metres is a minimum for my particular set up.
Iād have to sell the 5k+, i couldnāt justify keeping two headsets. So the 8KX would have to work for all my games (or at least the major ones). And the 5k+ default cable is proven to be too short for this room for the main couple of room scale titles I play.
I understand it might just not be technically feasible. I know it is hard to extend display port. In which case Iāll have to wait for a new standard (DP 2.0 perhaps) and get a headset that incorporates that then.
We are happy that now you are playing with Pimax 8K X at Asgardās Wrath.
How many hours (not days ) before you show us Pimax 8K X running a video through the lens of the game of the year ?
The 8kX looks very promising. When will you test the eye tracking with foveated rendering in DCS? We would like to know how it works and whatās the real benefit in performance/visual quality. Thanks.
Foveate rendering will be hit & miss until Devs incorporate into games. Much like ffr is atm.
8kX with scaler vs 8kX native with the (EDIT: ā¦exactā¦) same render resolutions, might be an interesting comparison, if situations that showcases any differences well can be found, with examples from severe subsampling to extravagant supersampling (although the latter is less interesting in this case); Letās see just how noticeable that extra resampling step softening even low resolutions may be⦠:7 (EDIT2: ā¦and the distortion correction having- or not having, the full panel resolution to work with - even with low resolution material, tooā¦)
@SweViver Would you mind showing us how the X or the Plus does for movies and desktop work?
Yeah Samsung are definitely going their own route and not WMR anymore. With 3 headsets in the pipe. My assumption is one of them will be a standalone Qualcomm unit with their own 6DOF controllers like the RINK they demoed a bit back. One will probably be PC tethered and one will their XR mixed reality one I would Imagine. The question now is will they use their super dense displaysā¦
Samsung standalone to replace GearVr phone holder is interesting idea. They could use 60ghz module on SoC and make Pc connection wireless, maybe even put SoC on seperate box/console and just stream to HMD. Like magic leap but wireless. Make HMD lighter, and give SoC all the power and cooling to extract max performance. A true quest competitor. Only problem could be the price. 400usd ballpark maybe not possible ATM with latest tech.
@cr4zyw3ld3r Where did you find this information ?
I think you get spoiled with black floor coming from an OLED set. Itās not just ED though I notice it on everything even bright scenes. The caves on Arizona sunshine are completely greyed out. Thereās just no avoiding it with LCD panels straped to your face. Everything else though I couldnt be happier!
i hate greys blacks.
Inky black adds 80% more immersionā¦
If you had a OLED display you will know itā¦
Horror games,scenes at night,dark corridors etc all benifit from OLED.
I remember mt first night flight with xplane 11 it was amazing with the oled screens.
Now with the pimax and the new upcoming pimaxes its gonne take you completly out of the immersion a real pittyā¦
Thanks. I already know that. I mean like it is right now. Iām using FFR with DCS. Could we have some benchmarks with the eyetracking and DFR? Of course if the game implements that natively it will be much better.
Indeed as otherwise canāt seeing many wanting eye tracking now if they donāt sell itās useability.
I took away the official announcement of the 8KX being released within some 3 months, being made available commercially to more than just the 400 backers (although that had been hinted at repeatedly in the past, thatās true), a completely unknown yet interesting headset variant in the 8K+, eye-tracking indeed coming at a significant cost now but on the other side seemingly fully ready for DFR (which Pimax had never promised), the basestations being up for delivery within 3-4 weeks, the hand tracking module being improved and soon to be available, etcā¦
Imho it seems like a slightly lazy narrative to just pretend that the only meaningful announcements they made were delays on the controllers and the eye-tracking price surprise. But I guess it serves a purpose. Just not very subtle.
@SweViver said āStay Tunedā
WE ARE TUNEDā¦
DFR was a natural progression & if you recall FR was a target of the EyeTracking. DFR will be a hit & miss like Nvidia FFR & likely like Nvidia FFR be limited currently to RTX cards. DFR = FFR using eyetracking. Which is similar to Filmed in 3d (native) vs converted to 3d.
Nothing Lazy about calling things as seen. Interesting announcements; but the event was overhyped as being good, when really itās close to okay. Letās not forget the controllers have been hyped to nearly being ready to release for a long time. And letās not forget the gdc/gtc controller demo that was said that never happened.
Now you forgot I mentioned the MAS; on the plus even with the almost year delay on Controllers will give them an opportunity to create a controller correcting issues of the Index Controllers.
The 8kX was expected and was the main event. But on the positive there finally admitting the housing issue is big instead of penalizing folks for discussing just how big.
