8KX and Nvidia drivers issue

Happy to read that this issue is fixed

Not sure if open a new thread but..whatever, i post here, if not correct i will open a new thread. I want to advice you that the last drivers that works with my combo Pimax 8KX and Nvidia 5080 (on Windows 11) are the 596.49. Using newer versions i get the 10600 connection error. I’m also using lastest Pimax Play version. Today i’ve just done some troubleshooting by downloading and uninstalling 610.88 and 610.74 going backwards (i might jumped some version in between). @PimaxQuorra please tell to your tech department (maybe you know already dunno).

Have a nice day everyone!

On a 5090 and 8kx 2076. The computer won’t detect the headset on anything past Pitool 1.44. Are there any benefits on the newer pimax software for the 8kx? Also, only have th 90hz option, how can I get the 120hz

have you done the diagnose? what error do you get? DP port error, USB or both?

10600 diply port error. Tried with the fiber optic cable and normal cable. Separate issue is that I can’t get any audio from the Dmas , even after forcing 7.1 audio

Did you try the latest 2.0 build? As far as I know, 120 Hz is also available in v2.0.

Thank you! Let me forward this to the dev team and ask them to conduct some tests on this.

Is your Pimax client starting with Windows? keep that option ON, in my case helped. Also i’m using the 2.0.3 version of Pimax Play and i have 120hz option enabled.

I would try pimax play and see if it works. If not file a support ticket

RTX 5080 + 8KX (2076): error 10600 on driver 616.56, fixed by rolling back to 596.49 – plus an odd “port switch” pattern that might help debugging

Adding another data point to this thread, because my case matches what @Sonsolar, @DieCola and some others reported and I found a reproducible pattern that may be useful for the NVIDIA/Pimax investigation.

My setup

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 (ASUS Prime), 3x DisplayPort 2.1 outputs
  • CPU: Intel I7-13700k (has an iGPU – tested with it enabled and disabled in BIOS, no difference)
  • Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z790 P-WIFI / RAM: 64GB DDR5 5200
  • OS: Windows 11 25H2
  • Monitors on the same GPU: 1x QHD 180 Hz + 1x FHD 180 Hz, both on DisplayPort
  • Headset: Pimax 8KX DMAS, serial 2076xxxxxxxx, firmware V2.1.255.2002, Pimax Play 2.0.3, Native mode @ 90 Hz
  • Headset cable: standard 8KX fiber-optic DP cable with 2 connectors (USB 3.0 + DP)

The problem

With NVIDIA Game Ready 616.56 (and the latest driver before that), Pimax Play shows “DisplayPort Connection Failure” with error code 10600. The USB side is fine, the headset LED/USB is recognized, only the DP link does not come up. The headset does not appear as a monitor in Windows, which I understand is expected in direct mode.

What did NOT help

  • Reinstalling Pimax Play: the headset worked for the rest of that day (after I reinstalled Pimax Play), but the next day the error was back.
  • Disconnecting one monitor and running the remaining one at 60 Hz: no change, so it is not a bandwidth problem.
  • Unplugging and re-plugging the headset’s DP cable into the same GPU port: never helped, not once.
  • Restarting the graphics driver with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B: no change. Also no change when unplugging the headset when doing so.
  • Disabling the iGPU in BIOS: no change.

What DID help, but only temporarily – this is the interesting part

Moving the headset’s DP cable to a different DP port on the GPU made the headset connect immediately, every time (I had to switch the port with one of the monitors). But as soon as I powered the headset off and on again with its power button, error 10600 was back on that port, and only moving to yet another port fixed it again. Re-plugging into the same port never recovered the connection. So the trigger seems to be the DP link (re)negotiation after the headset powers on, not a specific port and not the other monitors. On the affected drivers, a “fresh” port works exactly once until the next headset power cycle.

Side note: in one of those “working after a port switch” sessions the frame rate was noticeably worse than the day before with identical settings. I did not investigate further, so I cannot say whether that is related.

The fix

I rolled back to Game Ready 596.49 via a standard reinstall with the NVIDIA installer (no DDU). With 596.49 the headset connects reliably again, including after powering it off and on on the same port. Everything else is unchanged: same cable, same port, same Pimax Play 2.0.3, same firmware 2002, both 180 Hz monitors connected. So on the RTX 5080 this is now three failing driver builds (610.74, 610.88, and 616.56) versus a working 596.49. I have not tested 610.62.

My interpretation (not verified)

Something in the DP handshake/link training with the 8KX changed in the driver branches after 596.49. The fact that a brand-new port works once, but the same port never recovers after a headset power cycle, looks to me like the failed negotiation leaves a per-connector state behind in the driver. A new port starts clean and the headset is already fully booted by the time the driver talks to it, so the negotiation succeeds. That would also explain why a Pimax Play reinstall “fixed” it for a day.

@PimaxQuorra, if it helps the NVIDIA investigation, I am happy to provide Pimax Play log exports from a failing session or to test specific driver builds on this setup.

Nice post @Antidanti

I add a little thing, dunno if useful: even with my actual 596.49 drivers, after some days of testing, i see that the headset sometimes doesn’t get recognized immediately, but you need to “restart service” several times. After that (i’ve not tried to swtich DP ports as Antidanti adviced tho), on the same port, it starts to work normally.

Update about my issue: installed today the 616.64 drivers and the 8KX is working flawless, being recognized instantly when opening Pimax Play (i’m using the 2.0.3). No more detection issues so far.

@Antidanti you could try them.
