Give that man some cake!!! Totally agree with that. Some user guide added or even a weblink to a specific help page
Something as important as this should really have more people working on it no?

Can you please add a text field to Experience where the path to the file can be put & the file will be executed every time before new VR game/software execution, this way we can write a script (e.g. which preg replaces some settings, probably ones that yet not existing or whatever will be changed on steamvr side) & it will automatically do some previously manual done things which we used to do on daily basis.
I know you cover most important settings, but if something would be changed instead of having once time written script (which you can share on forum/github) you will need again to push for experience update or to do it manually over & over again.
This one a guide for dumb people, which i am not. But, i have followed it, i have not yet tried the last step as already seen some weird stuff.
My steam initially was placed at D.
I have followed your advises.
Now, my steam is empty. No games, no stuff. First start of steamvr - and guess what? He has all the settings i had before. He remembered overlay (fpsvr) which he immediatelly downloaded. He remembers each and every setting, including resolution.
I could proceed with steps, but im not really sure anymore if it makes sense.
Just my 2 cents;
With that configs I get tremendous clarity. Not necessary to Unistall Steam. Hopes it helps to get the best of your Pimax 8KX.
For what itâs worth: Editing the default steamvr settings file does work perfectly fine; Itâs just that:
As for Valveâs own hardware: The Index runs into default maxRecommendedResolution at 335% supersampling.
If you have Windows set up for multiple users, you may have a user-specific steamvr.vrsettings in your user\appdata hierarchy.
The warp you mentioned. You not try that with steamvr dashboard? For some reason that warps really bad. But everything else is mormal
Good point. Ill try again manually deleting everything in openvr.
After deinstall, Regclean!
SteamVR stymies Pimax headsets so badly itâs almost as if they want to cause maximum frustration and make people give up and buy another headset.
Thatâs what I said. I didnât assume you were dumb, so I mentioned âClean everything, also delete the filesâ. To me that always indicates to check AppData and any dependencies anywhere. Donât trust Anaconda Navigator man! I assumed youâd knew how to perform a clean Steam(VR) installation. My recommendation would be to just google it then. You can just push your games into library locations in Steam itself before doing that, and later add the library locations of your games again afterwards. You wonât lose any games that way.
To be honest, this is âuser errorâ indeed. It doesnât mean that youâre dumb. You just need a helping hand.
Donât forget to check C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local âŚ\LocalNow âŚ\Roaming
for remains of âopenvrâ and âsteamvrâ too. Also make sure to delete your files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config and look into your earlier one D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config too.
This is why your settings were remembered. They are stored elsewhere:
Fun fact, fresh installed steam is not using steam folder for vr cfgs anymore, its almost empty now.
update: nvm, as soon i have started pitool - the previous cfg in open vr was cleaned and new was created in steam/config.
@neal_white_iii yeah, i could finally solve this riddle, key of the issues is in app data which remains after uninstalling and is store in not a very obvious folders >.<
Going to edit cfg. Hope this helps, i really want to see some changes to see how it could improve in picture quality if we had new rtx out and foveeated rendering
I have said this hours ago, and itâs standard procedure. Anyway, I am glad you found the mistake. Enjoy your new graphical fidelity
When you add the maxRecommendedResolution line in the file, and then start SteamVR, be sure to open the steamvr.settings file and double check that the line is still there. Steam will sometimes delete it. If itâs gone then close steamVR and put in the line again, start SteamVR and repeat until eventually it stops removing it. It seems that placing the line after the lastVersionNoticeDate line keeps it there.
I noticed a massive difference on my StarVR One without the line vs adding it in. You donât want to limit the amount of resolution that SteamVR assigns to wide FOV headsets.
Also what is with these reviewers who only have a 1080 GPU? Youâd think for such an expensive 4K headset, that people would have at least a 1080 Ti or 2080 Ti graphics card to power it for the best experience.
Just one more thing. Make sure steamVR doesnât automatically set app resolution. Try custom resolution per application.
Did you try other games? Many times the issue is with auto downsampling, because game is trying to keep steady level of fps.
Nice breakdown. I learned a lot from your impression.
Could somebody tell me, please, what is the SteamVR resolution for Large FOV, PP On ?
Why when i go in my steamvr file in gpu speed it sayâs
Gpuspeedvendor nvidia geforce gtx 1080ti
When in reality i have a rtx 2080ti?
Take note of âProbably unnecessaryâ.
Also, take note of the location of the edited file.
The idea was to force SteamVR to use the setting and bypass editing the file within Steamâs directory but
in actuality, it had no effect which was not so bad after-all.
After editing:
X:\Program Files\Steam\config
steamvr.vrsettings
To include:
âsteamvrâ : {
âmaxRecommendedResolutionâ: 16384
The result was slide-show perf. and the image did not appear to be substantially better.
Changing the setting to 8192 also did not appear to have an noticeable effect.
Still, the result was slide-show perf.
However, lowering the value below 4096 did have an effect.
The image became worse.
Furthermore, when lowering PiToolâs Rendering Quality to <1.5.
8192, & 16384 values were usable but again, the image quality did not really change.
Removing the setting entirely and just relying on PiToolâs Rendering Quality had the best result.
To conclude, my SteamVR impression was based on with PiToolâs Rendering Quality @ 1.5.
âsteamvrâ : {
âmaxRecommendedResolutionâ: 4096
As thatâs the default for SteamVR.
