Once you purchase pimax - you wont Need anything better for years. Oculus? No way, it’s a garbage, they didn’t made high tech headset and they won’t make it better, no one did so far for now. Similar - maybe, but for sure not better. Will you go for something that is not better from the tech side just because its polished and works better out of the box? If yes, there are still lots of people who are not going to do that.
For me choosing anything else then pimax is like going from pc to a console, it’s a total downgrade and trade of for casualty & usability
So the right position and distance for any skull shape, and not just fortunately turning out to be perfect for your’s? Were there any adjustment possibilities?
I am a bit concerned, because not only do I have a, for current VR headsets, unfortunate Neanderthal-ish topology, but also quite a bit of asymmetry to my face, that forces me to shift any HMD to the side a little, to get both eyes in focus at the same time – would the snug and stable fit of the comfort kit, with that cup on your forehead, allow for that?
I wonder whether impedance, and rated power of the audio cicuitry in the new headsets match well with the Index speakers… Might try a transplant, then, or at least look into soldering on extension wires to the basic MAS audio drivers, and move and rotate them down on 3D-printed arms… :9
That’s a good question. I have two reasons to think that it would be OK for most people.
One year ago I was present at a demo of the 5k and the 8k and the distortions were a top topic of discussion. Today I spent about 2 hours at the Pimax booth and watched lots of people try the headsets. Nobody complained about distortions or other visual glitches. People looked really happy. Even Sweviver seemed a bit surprised by the feedback been so positive. I think this is the first day they demo the new comfort setup to more people.
And the other reason is that this system does what we already know works for most people - thicker pad and a DAS-like system that allows to fit the headset better.
Well, there are plenty of those of us who usually need a considerably thinner pad, or in my case - tend to need the entire shroud removed altogether.
We’ll see how things turn out. I for one am quite used to reported demo impressions being rather a bit better than when people end up getting their hands on production units, and using them for a bit of time.
… as you said yourself: Every new HMD demonstrated at shows has been reported on as: “no more SDE”, since between Rift DK1 prototype revisions… :7
I am not keen of the idea of buying an 8kX, only to throw away its MAS, and buy a DAS to replace it with. :7
If what you meant to say was to go for the MAS “deluxe” option; Maybe, maybe not… I’m not too fond of on-ears, and want proper cups, if I have to have the things touching me. :7
I would not underestimate them. They have proven themselves from technical standpoint. As for big investments - they are from China. If China decides VR is in the future and wants to control good share of market, then Pimax can get government or big companies support. But even without it if Pimax improves on communication/service they can do well by themselves.
Elite D performs fairly well on my overclocked 2080, with the right settings. FFR set to Conservative helps a lot and is less distracting in the latest PiTool beta 197. Set PiTool Quality to 1.0 then set SteamVR Video to 50% and App/ED to 100%. If you prefer to leave FFR off, set App/ED to 80%. Most of my in-game settings are on High, with a few set to Ultra, like textures and volumetric effects.
I’m getting 70-80 fps in space and ~60 fps in stations, because I’ve decided to turn FFR off. The fps was 80 and ~70-80 with FFR enabled (and App/ED at 100%).
Yes, I asked Martin about the desktop one, it was paired with the X, he told me it was a 2080, with Pitool at 1, steam vr 100SS, and normal fov. The laptops are 2080 as well
Ah fair enough. He mentions that one being a 2080 Ti on the video as above, and also I’m sure he told Seb that the 8KX needs the 2080 Ti on the MRTV stream but would have to go back and check
I think he told Seb that a 2080 was ok for the X, and it’s equivalent to a 1080ti, and Seb was very happy and surprised, because he only has a 1080ti at home. I was just behind them when they had this conversation
I wish your forum nicknames would hover above your heads at the booth so I could see who you all were. Feel like I missed out on meeting you guys. It was fun seeing Sweviver respond when I told him I was THE forum Pimel standing straight in front of him close enough to touch.
