Varjo Aero sounds promising

So Aero fov is basicly the same as VR-3. Have you measured fov in your VR-3 ?

Looks like resolution (in terms of total number of pixels) is pretty similar to 8kx? But I guess with a much smaller FOV, the result is signifcantly higher PPD.

Some nice features like Auto IPD, high rate eye tracking, but looks like audio solution is a step backwards?

I feel that if I hadn’t already bought the 8kx, it might be a good alternative, but it’s too close to the 8kx to justify dropping another $2k? Am I missing anything?

Picture quality and PPD is way better in Aero than 8kx but lets wait for Pimax event.

in terms of clarity its not close by any means, g2 has 19ppd and its sharper than 8kx by quite good marging, as g2 has smaller fov. Also aero has edge to edge clarity with cristal lenses while g2 is sharp only in small center. Distortions and performance are still questionable but 723gramms weight including strap looks very good

Also if the varjo Aero has the same warping(distortion) at the sides as my old varjo vr3 then its a big disapointment for me and ofcourse the mentioned missing audio solution.

I wait for some other vr headsets that will come…

Supposedly the new distortion profile is a huge improvement. They said they will release it ‘shortly’ too for the VR3, so we’ll know ‘shortly’ ™

I know MRTV said it was a huge improvement but others such as uploadvr seemed to consider it to be a deal breaker if they can’t fix it. Could some of the reviewers gotten older software that didn’t fix it?

Looking back at the upload review, they say “Varjo itself knows about this. I’ve been on multiple troubleshooting calls with the company over the past few weeks to talk about it and have been repeatedly assured that this is a software issue it’s aiming to fix with subsequent updates. In fact, the company says it expects to have its Base software fully ready for the Aero in December, which is when it also expects the first units ordered today to arrive.” So maybe it’s just not finalized?

Possibly. Although In my opinion the only way it can be really solved would be using the eye tracker with a dynamic distortion algo (so a different distortion profile each frame depending on the iris position). Their eye tracker works quite well so it’s too bad they don’t seem to be working on such solution (at least that’s what they said on their discord)

I would hold off on selling VR-3. They may eventually get steam working with the focus display, and you would be paying almost 2,000 for a side grade that will give you similar clarity to the unit you already own. As many suggested they would do, they ditched their signature feature to bring costs “down.”

I payed all of 80 bucks for my Pimax 4k and it gave me 1440p per eye, and you couldn’t see the pixels either LOL

Most of the cost for this is likely in those custom variable resolution aspherical lenses they have. I wonder if they liscenced optics from Thineyes.

It shouldn’t be about the size or clout of a youtuber with companies, but sadly it is. Your videos are very thorough and you really got into your stride with it. Would be cool for them to throw you a bone.

Tell us Kevin that you guys have something in the wings that will kick this thing’s a**! lol My 4k already gave me no pixels and aspheric lenses, so Varjo is dreaming if they think I will hand them close to $2000. I am nostalgic for 1990, but not if its in the form of dollars from my wallet.

They love their apple style monopoly don’t they?

Yeah. I’m grateful though for Pimax reaching out to me, even when I was on break from VR videos, offering me products to review and opportunities.

One thing about Pimax is that they actually try and take feedback from customers, and reach out to their online community. Any time I think of any idea, I shoot them an email and tell them about it, on the off chance they decide to try, because they may try, unlike everyone else.

though vertival fov is reported about 73 by cas&cherry when she has 106 with index and 90+ with oq2. Uploadvr says he can clearly see top and bottom borders. Plus chromatic aberrations and very prounonced distortions.

Could be better. But he likes comfort a lot and ofc the resolution and clarity.

But fov and distortions i guess the worst part, interesting if vr3 has better vertical fov, i didnt like vp2 solution either

Varjo has said before that the reason focus displays don’t work with SteamVR is that Valve refuses to support it. So we can only hope Valve changes their mind.

I would imagine Valve is not happy with how Varjo has tried to patent the “foveated display” concept. The knowledge surrounding using optical combiners and multiple displays been around for a long time as an established idea, but Varjo has really tried to own it, since they developed a marketable product.

Valve favors open source and mass availability, so maybe that’s why.

I don’t know if that’s a potential reason. What Varjo mentioned in the discord was something about how Valve didn’t see the need to support “4 displays” as urgent or necessary because of the limited amount of use cases (ie products that use 4 displays).

I pre-ordered my varjo Aero today .
It was a no brainer for me .

That’s a short fun video how most of us will react when they got their unit in January
