Yep since the headsets were not built to spec these earlier models are essentially broken for modules being quietly released as usb 2 only.

Pimaxusa can you point to where it says on the eye tracking information/order page that in order to get 120hz (now 118) you need to provide your own usb cable and connect it to the eye tracker and computer? I certainly do not remember seeing that and no pimax video mentions this. Pretty upset by this,

valid point, i’d have liked to know before ordering but also keep in mind thats only a problem with 5k+/8k (and maybe artisan), the 8k+ and 8kx seem to have a usb-c 3.0 capable port and should work at full speed after updating firmware (we will see later how this works out, nothing proven yet)

they should at least add a “*” to the 120Hz and explaining the matter in the online shop and advertising so that customers are informed about it

we would have had the hz conversation and still bought the EY for $100 , DFR is the gain

speak for yourself, as tempting as the 99$ sounded, there was shipping (25$) and yesterday i got a additional fee from fedex (2 weeks after the delivery) about ~30€, half for tax (might be ok as it was imported from china to EU) but same amount of money as the tax was handling fee from fedex - nice hidden feature :frowning:

if there would have been 30Hz for 5k+ i would have waited to see whats coming next, and after FFR it was already clear that there would not be that much gain as DFR is just the same with moving center (and some lag, depending on the implementation)

edit: with all the added cost for shipping, handling, tax , additional cable and usb3 repaeter/hub its going near 200 bugs

It was certainly clear to many, but nevertheless, against all common sense, everyone rushed to the first 50 pieces as if there was no tomorrow.

Fair points too , but most of us would still be buying them ( someone said is was like getting a gpu upgrade ) , my main gripe is the reduced fov , hope they can improve the sensitivity with better software

At pimax maybe. No one knew they quietly downgraded the usb 3 to usb 2 in the non vision headsets. (Not sure if 8k+ has usb 3 or 2 easy to check the cable end).

Yes, only 2.0 are not so fine. but it was clear, that the sockets cannot have a full 3.0 bandwidth because the tracking already use a big part. It’s just only one line coming from the computer.

Not true. Usb 3 bandwidth would be sufficient for the ET and Tracking. Remember og Vive and Oculus rift were stressing usb 2 bandwidth; usb 3 has considerably more available.

And it is only 1 line if it was in the all in one cable now it is not.

tracking data is not that much amount of data, tracking runs fine with usb 2.0 and even the 30Hz eye tracking parallell, not a bandwidth factor at all, it needs to be transmitted in a x ms succession i guess to be usefull

not sure how much data tracking, audio or other internal things together use. But i know no other headset, wich run only on a usb 2.0 port for this basic things without problems. So i mean, this data are lot more as imagine.

after all, 1GB Bandwidth was reserved for the two USB C ports. and at the time of development one might still assume that it would be enough.

Hadn’t someone done a measurement on the 3.0 port of the 8kx? there you can see what is ultimately usable. Divide the value by two, subtract some line loss and you have the maximum that would theoretically be possible for two separate hubs.

i had my hmd running with a 5m usb 2.0 extension last year (no eye tracking) and it did fine (including audio)

also i got my 8m kit for using the eye tracking directly connected to the computer, works at 120Hz as with my short cable, so testing some games with eye tracking can begin

Nice, my other HMDs, also the 8k or 8k+ won’t start run on a USB 2.0 Port.

Maybe your extension cable is from a better quality .

USB2 only has a maximum of 480Mb/s, so 1Gb of Bandwidth couldn’t be reserved. So, even if there was only 1Gb reserved for the USB-C ports with a USB3 interface, that would still be double the maximum bandwidth of what the USB2 could do and that is neglecting all the other stuff that’s also plugged into the USB2 interface. USB3 has about 10 times the capabilities of USB2.
And why anyone would think that was enough when even long before the kickstarter development eyetracking AND handtracking both individually already had problems with the bandwidth of even one undivided USB port. And the whole modular approach was supposed to host both and potentially more.

they use two different hubs for the C Ports, so they reserved 480mb for each (1Gb)

The entire interface that goes to the PC for anyone but 8kX users is USB 2 so they can only have 480mb in total.

from the computer to the HMD it is 3.0 and is only then distributed in the device.

The interface in the HMD is still just one USB2 Hub that is not capable of more than 480mb, no matter what cables or connections go there. There is no way for the connection from the USB2 Hub to the PC to ever exceed 480mb/s. The only important connection is the connection of the one USB2 hub to the PC, no matter what’s inbetween or around it or anything.

And even if there was a second USB2 hub it would still not change the fact that USB3 would have had a lot more bandwidth and should have been seen as a requirement early on.

Edit: So I just checked my top USB C port to check if it goes to another hub or just another port and apparently it doesn’t do anything at all. No connection with any device that works with the bottom port. So I guess I don’t even have a top port. :stuck_out_tongue: Never had a reason to check that before.
