The 4.9k iRating Climb: How One Driver Conquered the BMW M2 Cup at 50

In the world of sim racing, there’s a common myth that your peak performance is a young man’s game. But for PetrusRex, a 50-year-old racer with six years of sim experience and real-life track time, the best results were still waiting to be claimed.

In a recent season of iRacing’s BMW M2 Cup, PetrusRex achieved what many thought impossible: a climb from a 1.8k iRating to a peak of 4.9k, finishing P3 Overall in the world rankings.

The Evolution of a Racer

PetrusRex’s journey didn’t start with high-end rigs or podium finishes. Like many enthusiasts, he began with a modest Logitech G920 and a single 49" curved monitor. While he enjoyed the competition, his consistency was a challenge, and his lap times remained “average at best.”

For PetrusRex, the goal was never just about the number on the screen. “I’ve never really been an iRating chaser,” he says. “I see it more as a measure of progression. I’d rather finish last in the top split than win the second split, because being in that environment is how you actually learn.”

The “Click” Moment: Bridging Sim and Reality

The true turning point in his racing career happened away from the computer. During a real-life track day in 2022, an instructor’s lesson on trail braking finally “clicked.” Feeling the car rotate as he eased off the brakes in a real vehicle provided a sensory map that he was determined to bring back to his sim rig.

To translate that physical sensation into the virtual world, PetrusRex focused on building a high-fidelity environment. He upgraded his setup to include a Fanatec DD2, Simtrecs ProPedal GT, and a Pimax Crystal to achieve the necessary depth perception and visual clarity.

With the hardware providing the feedback he needed, he began to apply those real-world physics to the BMW M2. The results were almost immediate.

Breaking Down the Seasons

His progression through the BMW M2 Cup shows the power of dedicated practice combined with the right tools:

  • Season 1: Focused on mastering the car’s limits. He jumped from 1.8k iRating to 3.5k.

  • Season 2: Refined his racecraft and reached a 4.4k iRating, ending the season P6 Overall.

  • Season 3: The breakthrough. He hit a peak of 4.9k iRating, finishing P3 Overall in the world, P1 in Division 1, and P1 in Time Attack.

Technical Achievements and Future Goals

The season demonstrated that consistency and technical understanding are as vital as raw reflexes. Having mastered the BMW M2, PetrusRex is now shifting focus toward the Porsche Cup, seeking a new challenge to further refine his skills on the track.
