Suggestion: DO NOT POWER 8kX at 12V! 8K X USB to a Power Supply Adapter Works Fine and Saves a USB Port!

I don’t know if this is the right place to put this or maybe I should start a new thread but I have an 8KX and when I got the new fiber optical cable it worked great for about 3 or 4 months. Then I don’t know what happened but either got damaged it or it just stopped working. Anyway I got a replacement from pymax then I couldn’t get it to work it wouldn’t power the HMD… We played around with it for a while still couldn’t get it to work so they sent me a another cable. We couldn’t get that 1 to work either so they also told me they were having problems with that cable. So I ordered ordered a 3rd cable when it was on sale just to make sure, but had the same problem couldn’t get it to work. Do if anyone knows what power supply I can buy to to get it to work please let me know.

Hmm… Previous optic cable worked?

As a test try a wall usb power source not connected to pc and see if the power light works.

If so you may need a Y usb extra power cable. Ut will split the Usb3 cable into a usb3 with an extra usb2 cable for extra power like the original cable.

Thanks @Heliosurge I do get power but but it will Flash for a split 2nd and then go off but the power stays on and when I say a Flash I’m just talking about a Flash on the screen then it goes black again.

That is concerning and support has tried a remote session? Have you tried the original non optic cable?

Yeah I had a remote session for 2 different cables that they sent me

What about the original cable?

The original cable works fine and like I said the fiber optic cable works fine for about the 1st 3 or 4 months

any other USB Device now additional in the same Hub?

Then it is still the cable imo.

Can you test on another pc?

I have an alieware area 51 R2 desktop with plenty of usb ports and have had no problems before with the original cable or the first fiber optic cable I had received but I can’t understand how I can get 3 bad cables in a row. Anyway I did what you said @Heliosurge and ordered a y cable and should get it in a few days, I will let you know if it works. Thanks.

Your quite welcome. I was curious why they dropped the extra power usb in the cable. Tbf they could have added a 2nd usb3 cable with an extra usb-c around the headset connector; reinforcing power delivery and providing the missing 2nd usb-c for the 8kX. Guessing maybe jumped the gun and had these pre ordered.

Probably because USB cables usually have far worse problems with voltage drop across the wiring than with an individual port not having enough power. Most likely the fiber optic cable is able to halve this problem, because the shielding does not need to be protected from ground loops for USB3 data, and can be used as a very excellent negative current return.

More likely they ordered the cables without considering extra power for things like Laptops. Wouldn’t be the first Rash decision purchase. And is likely why some are having failures on the Optic Cable with the original cable working perfectly.

I have had a tremendous amount of experience with USB cable voltage drops, including various extension cables of the highest quality, splicing heavier gauge copper wire, and logging the voltages at subsecond intervals. Anyone seriously working with microcontrollers has probably noticed the >0.25V drops across the standard thin USB2/USB3 power wires, as well as the many unfortunate consequences of not needing to keep the USB shield free of any connection to any switching noise.

Also, Pimax headsets probably have voltage regulators in them, which helps.

If you really think another USB power connector is needed for your situation though, you can buy something like one of these.

Yes we already mentioned this as a possible fix for the optic cable failures. As the oem cable supplied with headset works. Just too bad it wasn’t kept standard as per the original cable. Usb Hard drives and cdroms often have the extra power connector as well. :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

I know some users get confused enough not matching the blue USB3 to a blue USB3 host and such when possible, which causes even more problems. Personally, I like not having the expectation of using those extra power connectors by default when not necessary.

Not as many as you may think. And if you followed some users long ago discovered they could potentially use the headset without plugging in the usb2 extra power cable(like usb Hard drives). So having it does not impede your preference of not using it if it works for you.

It was predicted that ppl might run into This issue on the Optic cable and has turned out to be true for a fair number if ppl. Whom cannot use the Optic Cable with the original being fine. It also limits use with powerful enough laptops as usb are often underpowered and require extra power for usb high power peripherals. Just short sighted in making the Optic cable. As demonstrated by a wide variety if users.

One member even recalled his computer shutting down due to over current protection from usb drawing too much power. Motherboards, psu and usbs are not made equal.

@Heliosurge I finally got back in town and had a chance to use my y-cable splitter both of my cables came up with the same problem problem it’ll turn the headset on for a few seconds and you’ll get the lights in the display and then it goes off and reboots. However when the lights do not come on it stays connected in pitool.

Hmm… Imho then some issue with the cable. Only other thing might help would maybe be a dp booster cable. But don’t know exceot the optic cable had been hit n miss.
