Strange smell coming from my PC?

I think by the time someone gets their Pimax working reliably, they have (had to) become an expert in VR and PCs!

Maybe get a bigger PSU off of amazon, if it dose not fix the problem, send it back :sunglasses:

lol … have you read these forums. It might do more to scare away potential customers.

I have a sneaking suspicion that half of Pimax owners have a background in IT :joy:

You may be right. Once upon a time, I installed broadband and ethernet cables. I build my PCs from scratch, not to save money, but in order to have quality components.

Yup I used to work for a company called The Super Happy IT guys.

So if you ever see a van rolling around town with the acronym S.H.I.T. on it , its them.

So about 5 days ago, I dusted my PC components using this electric duster:

Yes I know it’s not as powerful as an air can but I wanted to see if it would at least reduce the smell. The smell has not gone away. Sometimes it more noticeable, sometimes less, but I can smell it the closer I am to my desk. I worry the smell might be harmful for my health. It feels a bit intoxicating.

Here are some pics of my PC. It’s on the floor underneath my desk

My Index, monitor, PC, and lamp are all connected to a power strip I’ve owned for many years. Is it safe to use power strips?

Anyways, at this point I’m seriously considering just buying a brand new 2080 Ti gaming PC that has liquid cooling and sell my current smelly PC lol. Does anyone know any good companies that sell ready made gaming PCs?

Power Bar should be fine. But is better to buy a quality one with decent surge protection rating for piece of mind.

I see your pc is on the floor, myself prefer to have it higher but you don’t have it on Carpet.

Smells can be difficult with out xp in identify what it smells like.

Does the smell get stronger/worse when the PC is under full load, rather than idle? If not, it could be an electrolytic capacitor went bad and vented.

Would not worry about the smell causing health problems. And to support my work in a 3D printing business, I have gone through such things as the academic studies on pyrolysis of kilograms of plastic. Long before enough material vaporized to be hazardous after spreading around the room, the PC would almost certainly be non-functional. Especially with RoHS these days, it is hard to imagine anything in a PC that can vaporize in hazardous quantities.

At this point, I am beginning to suspect whatever is in your household dust includes some sort of adhesive, and maybe that is vaporizing now. A proper air can is a must have for any gaming PC.

Plug strips are definitely ok generally. Keep in mind though, gaming PCs these days are high wattage, so any electrical cabling to them needs to be high-quality. Replace if anything is suspicious, or the plug is rotary type. If mounted to a rotating chair, use a zip tie appropriately for strain relief. Also, if there is a built-in surge protector, it can catch fire, so keep it away from carpets, curtains, etc.
After some research, this is what I chose.

If you are interested, I can build you a clone of my machine (which is near the best money can buy), or something similar. Any new PC comes with the risk of having a different set of problems though. Your time may be best spent either resolving your current problem, or ignoring it.

Looks like your PS is a the bottom and you said fan is blowing upward and above it your gpu is blowing down. If that is the case the airflow isn’t optimum especially with what appears to be a cluttered case. can’t tell fro sure from the pics. The noise grinding noise might have been a bent fan blade (possibly on the PS) that slowed the motor enough to (almost) burn it out causing burnt wiring in the motor. That smell could last for quite some time. Even months.
Just a guess, but would explain a lot of what you have said. You could try pulling the PS and giving it the smell test in another room while airing out the rest of the rig.

Yes, I’ll try to do a smell test of all my components again this time using an empty paper towel roll on my nose. I read it helps isolate smell.

You might just replace the PSU outright. If it’s not the PSU, then it’s probably dust in the PSU, and either way, if the old PSU turns out to be fine, you can sell it on eBay.

The reason i suggested pulling the PS is the “possible” burnt smell may have impregnated the case long enough is it could be hard the isolate it as the source while it’s in the case. Also why I suggested airing out the case at the same time.

Hmm, that could be a possibility. I’ll probably replace the PSU with the exact same kind but brand new. That way I don’t have to change the cables. For some reason the previous owner put a thin velcro strap around the PSU to hold it down?

I’ve read a horror story of a guy who bought a new but different type of PSU from the same brand and didn’t bother using the new cables because they looked identical to the old ones. It created a plume of smoke and destroyed his whole PC.

This can happen. I have done it. As long as the PSU is exactly the same model, it should be ok. However, as an extra precaution, backup your data and unplug your disks before attempting to power on for the first time. That way at least your data will be absolutely safe.

I have a Thermaltake Smart RGBPro 750W 80+ Bronze PSU and I can’t seem to find it available anywhere. Since I’m replacing it, I might as well upgrade to a better one.

Do any of you guys know a good reliable 750W PSU that has an 80+ Gold or Platinum rating? I’m willing to switch out the cables with new ones.

Oh by the way, some of the cables from my PSU are connected to a metal panel that’s screwed to the side of the PC case. I don’t know what’s on there.

This 850W Titanium PSU looks good but a couple people in the reviews complained about the cable quality and how it’s difficult to plug them into things:

I have a Corsair RM1000 with the same Zero RPM Fan mode, and I absolutely love it.
Never had any issues with it.

Should I update my BIOS? I have a Gigabyte Z390 UD motherboard and I have the F6 bios which is 4 versions outdated. Latest is F10e.

I’ve read some articles though about the dangers of updating the BIOS if it’s not necessary.
