Here are two pictures I took with my phone of the StarVR One and the Pimax XR. The sharper image (meaning with more screen door) is the XR and the blurry one is StarVR
The ridges on the lenses. Is the spacing wide like Pimax, or narrow like Oculus CV1? I would have thought the latter would have been impossible for a wide FOV headset, but it looks like that might be what they did.
And that adjustability is exactly why I wrote this in another thread.
Please make this an option i PiTool
letâs give those OLED panels a fair fight
âor was it the other way aroundâ ![]()
Thanks, yeah I saw these before. Very interesting. It may be diffusion filter/layer or just bad pixel scaling, but indeed it looks quite bad for a USD3.2K piece of tech.
Thing is, you can make the image look sharp enough on a very low resolution panel, just like the HTC Vive, but it requires proper optics, good scaling and no filters involved. Sharpness is not all about resolution.
Thanks, I will discuss this with the engineers tomorrow. Im not sure how or if its possible, but they should know.
Hey cool Marcin
Think of the Pimax HMD as a single PC monitor, you are able to adjust the colors via onscreen display. These adjustments are stored in the LCD panel controller board. One can adjust those settings via ICM profile by using calibration software along with a coloriometer and save these settings in an ICM profile. that profile can be loaded into the the GFX card for a specific monitor thats connected.
The reason we cannot do this for the Pimax HMDâs currently is that they are not visible as a monitor in windows.
The LCD panel controller in the HMD stores the color calibration of the panels, so my guess would be that if possible they could update the ICM profiles via firmware update.
I would be happy to assist in testing with any engenieers from Pimax
Sebastian comparing Alyx in the StarVR one to the other headsets he tried (including the 8k-X) HALF-LIFE ALYX ON THE STARVR ONE - Through The Lens - How Good Is Alyx On The Human Vision FOV HMD? - YouTube
From all through the lens shots, 8kx is a no brainer winner. And the comparison in price/value 8kx wins by a landslide.
Hope pimax can overall step it up in all facet of business because they really have a special product here.
Is not a âlotâ lower than index. It is lower than Index. It is somewhat below the Odyssey +.
Well, I own the StarVR and have the Index, and a bunch of other headsets. The Index is sharper for sure, but also has better image convergence and amazing sweet spot clarity.
Edit: I really think the lenses are part of the culprit in StarVRâs image clarity.
As far as colors, contrast and black levels are concerned, we can put an end to that debate by simply measuring it. One user on the Valve Index Reddit did so with the Vive, Valve Index, and Rift S. You can see the results of that here:
Iâve mentioned this in another thread, and others have replied with the desire to wait for the final 8KX unit before going to such lengths. Thats fair, I suppose.
Yes but his conclusion is that if alyx wouldnât do the object culling, it would be the best experience on the StarVR, beating all other headsets and that includes the 8kx (also since he preferred the index over the 8kx)
I think Sebastian was being hyperbolic which he can be from time to time. I have managed to somewhat improve the image of the StarVR one image on my end, but I will elaborate on my original thread after this post.
Iâm not much of a gamer, but I have played Alyx on the XR and the Index up to level 2. The Index have the sharpest image of them all and best clarity hands down. The XR while not the widest FOV or the sharpest image, provides the best immersion overall in my view. It is pretty sharp and somehow the SDE kind of adds a nice texture to the world. The colors are very good and the blacks. It is not quite StarVR but very close as they are also Oleds.
I will say the XR is the best for ALyx, because the resolution is pretty good and the FOV is also very good.
Now. I could change my mind if I can solve the âGreenâ Mura remaining on the StarVR I could test.
No, what Sebastian actually said was that if alyx wouldnât do the object culling, that the StarVR would be the most immersive experience out of all the headsets. But he didnât specifically say it was the best headset.
Just chill and wait for your StarVR and 8KX to arrive and see for yourself.
Sebastian says a lot of things sometimes hyperbolic and he changes his mind about things (which is normal, no offense to him) so I wouldnât put too much weight on what he says all the time.
Iâm not worried too much about 8KX colors as after trying 8K+ I found the colors were fine.

I will attempt use an EOS 5D Mark 3 to snag a few shots and post them here. If I dont, is because i failed
I donât have distortionsâŚ
not in the 8k+ and not in my 5k+⌠So itâs at least not an issue in every case.
If at all, its an even larger sweet spot, no frasnel lense Effekts and true blacks that I am missing to a perfect HMD.
What is your IPD? Most people notice it to a degree.
62 - Sure at the very edge I can see it. Just like with any visual material but since it hurts turning my eyes so far left or right (or stare at my VR nose tip) I donât do that except for testing purposes, in real world usages in DCS, ACC or Alyx and so on I do not notice any distortionâŚ
( And again, I am still not sure if itâs the effect the lense edges produce or the digital/algorithmic aspect of distortion correction to game geometry that most people notice and refer to as âthe distortionâ).
