I really hope he addresses the important questions. A lot of us are about to blindly buy one of these through Kickstarter.
I would not exactly call this a blind purchase. you can go to the kickstarter page and read all of the Specifications.
If you are not sure whether to fund the kickstarter, wait until the full release and buy it then. I have the current 4k headset and even went through the recent shipping mixup. PiMax has proven to be one of the most customer conscious companies I have ever done business with. They have treated many of us with superb service. So, I have every confidence that the new headsets will be satisfactory in every way. Iām willing to fund the kickstarter as soon as it open up.
Well it kind of is. Specs are only a small part of the whole story. Specs wonāt tell you about the focal overlap or distortion in geometry. Those are really important aspects, thatās why we really need someone like Norman to check it out for us.
Everything is speculation until the kickstarter goes live. I agree a good honest review is in order, but keep in mind that the review is still based on a prototype which will likely change as the release date nears.
Is Norman going to be reviewing the 8K (LCD) version only, not the 5K OLED version as well?
Not that blind considering the video from ifa.
I would imagine both. There was a bit of review on both during the ifa.
Sooooooo ⦠the big question everybody wants to know: when will the review be up ? @deletedpimaxrep1
According to Norms post they have agreed to delay posting the review. They probably agreed to post it when the kickstarter goes live
Norms post:
āweāll be filming impressions soon, but agreed to a short embargo for posting our video. consider this thread a good place to post your questions that weāll answer as best we can!ā
Preferably before or even during the time allotted while accepting money through Kickstarter.
Itās really concerning that their plan is to have HMDās in consumer hands in possibly 2 months after the Kickstarter.
Are they really that strapped?
Pimax 4K gave them not enough profit?
No one wants to see outlandish claims just to procure funds.
Really disappointing if Pimax makes them hold the review until the kickstarter goes live. Hopefully it will come before then. Canāt say it inspires confidence when reviews are withheld like that. Makes it look like they donāt have enough confidence in their product to release reviews before anyone points any money on the line.
Agreed. Why not release the review right away ?
Yes I agree. Pimax do some strang things but Im sure we will see it by Friday or the 19th at the latest. Those are the two seperate dates Iāve heard the kickstarter will go live??
Personally I would have liked Tested try the prototype in their home studio like all the other headset reviews they do. That way they could have tried it on a top end PC with multiple games. Its more likely they will get a demo in a hotel room somewhere with a gaming laptop. See norms original post below
āTo clarify: weāre getting a demo tomorrow, and hoping to interview them as well. We donāt know what demo or how long weāll get to use it, nor the state of their hardware/software. I donāt consider it a test until we get to use it for an extended period of time under our own test conditions and setups. But super interested to see how it looks and share that with you!ā
Imho, but when youāre reading some review that is not paid or paid but still reveals some cons you might be disappointed by this things or even become upset resulting in to:
- changing your mind and not purchasing it ( saying youāre most likely not going to buy it, although purchasing later)
- sharing your ānegativeā feedback to others before the article even goes live for pre-order
all this based on a āprototypeā; the moment when small cons might affect a pre-order hype that is really needed in order VR to success. We all need to understand that we should be interested not only in product itself but also in manufacturers wealthy as well.
Sharing a review within kickstarter campaign or afterwards might decrease negative impact of cons, mostly because people will be more impatient and might close their eyes on some cons, especially when we talk about time&amount limited packages as āearly birdā. So even if they pre-order and discuss things later - they are still customers who purchased the item, its a big difference when someone says āi know there are issues, but i still purchased itā vs āi know there are issues, therefore probably not going to purchase itā (even if he purchase it later, first opinion is very important too).
I think this could be an explanation - there are some cons that they wont reveal too early, because people like focusing on negative things. Itās mot really āhidingā information (like some people from this thread already called, a good example of feedback type that no one needs), its just finding the best possible time to share this info and maybe get more time to prepair/montage a better review.
p.s. the other side, since Norman isnt really going to test it, his āimpressionā from the demo might work as a good advertisement with no found cons, so maybe they want to launch it closer to kickstarter campaign
I have trouble in low light and require strong brightness, so Iām hoping itās at least on par with the vive. Anyone know the nits?
If it is not posted before the kickstarter begins Iām afraid that many will not decide to become backers. Myself included. I donāt think itās a wise decision to delay the video review. There are a lot of naysayers and skeptics out there. It gives the appearance that Pimax is hiding something, or want to edit the video to make it look better than it really is.
They have been working on this for a long time now. I think they only need a kickstarter to manufacture it. They have the manufacturing in place but it still takes capital to get the ball rolling.
It depends on when the embargo is. Assuming that itās the day of the Kickstarter launch, Iād assume Pimax decided on it solely for publicity, to time the spike in traffic towards the 8K when the viewers will be able to back it right away. The fact that Norm is allowed to share an impressions video immediately shows that they arenāt trying to hide faults, at least.
In the same sense that Iām under the impression that the Kickstarter itself is also a publicity tool more than anything, but who knows.
And donāt necessarily be afraid to back it, IIRC you can cancel a Kickstarter pledge at any time before the Kickstarter ends, in case you need more time to be convinced.
I think this is the most logical explanation. And it makes sense too, youāll want people to be able to hit that āback this projectā right away after they see the review.
I guess weāll have to wait a week ā¦
Once you join the Kickstarter funding, you can still decide to cancel it right?
