Edit: okay I just learned that parallel projection is only a problem with the blurriness in large FOV!! If I keep pitool in normal fov games looks just like it does when pp off (clear) it was the large fov with pp causing blur (parallel projection bug)
Old post: I’m sure sweviver may have covered this in his 2+ hour video but I may have missed it. I just realized this today and wanted to let people know. (at least for 0.91 pitool) Some people at the Chicago meetup wondered why the 5k+ front blue light was blinking and the 8k was not. I had no idea at the time. Well, it ends up that I didn’t know that parallel projection setting was on half the time (some people wanted to test pavlov earlier in the day and it probably got left on after that) and when it’s on that front light will blink.
Well here’s the kicker… I turned parallel projection off just now and restarted pitool, and the clarity in SteamVR home was like a night and day difference. I have everything set to 100% in SteamVR still, and 1.0 pitool. When I look at the SteamVR grid of lines they are crystal clear (unlike during the backer meetup and I was sort of frustrated by the blur because I remembered it clearer the night before) and Supersampling did not have the impact that I had hoped on the grid lines at that time.
In addition, I just could not figure out where the blur was coming from in Skyrim, etc because I had also tested it the night before and it looked amazing. Well the parallel projection being on for apps that don’t require it was the problem!
It appears the parallel projection setting not only affects performance but also makes regular apps a lot blurrier. They should really add a note for this there also as it’s huge!
So basically, turn it off if it’s on and the game doesn’t require it! For example Pavlov requires it, Vorpx with rocket league requires it (you see double vision in those titles) Today I have realized a bunch of backers did not see the 5k+ at it’s full potential unfortunately. The 8k had the solid blue light on the whole time it seems so was running max potential.

Also if anyone can confirm this with their 5k+ or 8k please let me know! Try to look at the SteamVR grid lines with it on. Then uncheck parallel projection and restart pitool. Then check the grid lines again. Keep pitool render quality 1.0 and 100% ss in steamvr.
PS. I knew the setting had a performance impact but I had imagined it was very small, after doing some research I see some users saying it can be as high as 20-30% hit, so another reason to leave it off if the app doesn’t have double vision!
It was already described as bringing performance for compatible games, but shouldn’t be use on non compatible games.

But I agree that could have easily been missed.
For your information you Can fix rocket league without using parallel projections simply by adjusting the convergence ofset. Vorpx does it without any performance or sharpness cost.

@aesopfabled thanks, question. How do I adjust convergence in vorpx. I don’t see it in the del menu. I tried focal offset buts it’s still not lining up
@karrtoon
Focal offset is what you want in rocket league. Open rocket league and close an eye and get to “training”. Focal offset will address the in game 3d, not the ui, which won’t be perfect by the way unfortunately.
Setting the stereo 3d and focal offset:
Loosen your pimax so you can lift it up, stare at a focal plane on the ground that and then drop the visor back on your eyes and adjust the 3d. You need to keep doing this, refocusing in some nearby real world focal plane, otherwise your brain will lose frame of reference VERY easily, which is one reason so many often complain about vorpx because they didn’t think hard enough how to do it lol
Keep going back and forth until your eyes no longer need to make any major adjustments to the difference in 3d. You now have the 3d set appropriately without causing headaches.
You then need to do the same with another setting(s) for ui scale and depth.
Good luck
@aesopfabled Weird I’m doing focal offset and did what you said. it’s still not perfectly lining up at any setting (creates eye strain) I mean I can get it to line up but looks like a cardboard cutout game now (in addition to the slight eye strain) played with fov and 3d seperations too.
I am actually using the [High FOV] profile made for pimax on the cloud profiles and it looks like a native VR title, and still get 90 fps on high graphics and 2560x1440 (give it a shot!) but it says it requires to turn parallel projection on. Can you give me your focal offset settings or upload it to the vorpx cloud profiles, also can you try that profile to compare. (with parallel projection on, and follow the instructions they provided) I think you will be very pleased.
Edit: Also just noticed when you line it up the vorpx menu and environents such as 3d lounge still in double vision with pp off
Yeah I’ll try to upload it later. I have parallel projections off. I haven’t tried official profile yet but maybe I’ll check it out. If I upload it I’ll label it Aesop.
@karrtoon generally I avoid enabling parallel projections setting because It’s so performance heavy.
