[Poll] What kind of smell do you want to use for which VR content?

Sitting there inhaling the smell of melted plastic & such is not reccommended or healthy.

The scent module is 3rd party add on. Simple math scent module partner has asked for ideas on scent combos.

Granted this is likely more a module for commercial use; it also has usage among users whim choose relaxing experiences & sensory therapeutic ideas. Live in a NY highrise? Maybe it would be nice to relax in a tropical paradise with sights, sounds & scents.

Ever been to Tahiti? I hear it’s a magical place…

Props to anyone who catches that reference :stuck_out_tongue:

Once upon a time a long time ago in a galaxy far away
On the brink of the century in 1992
A game was developed in Japan and exported to the USA.
The use of English language was really ridiculous and made a lot of laughs.
People turned it into a meme: All your base are belong to us

Thats why I ended one of my posts in this thread with: All your Smell of Girls are belong to us.
There is a risk that the smell unit is becoming such a meme again.

At the height of the meme there was a great clip being the culmination of the meme.
Mind: this was 1992 and the game graphix were way backward to nowadays standards.

Thanks, I’ll remind our Japan partner to be more careful when the scent modules launch.

You are completely right in your expectation - it will likely be a gimmick and only be supported by a handful of games, etc., and not even nearly as useful as the hand-tracking.

But I like the idea nevertheless, and as I can afford to spend a bit of money on weird concept stuff which will not see any wider adoption, I will want to try it out. And who knows, perhaps somebody creates a mod for e.g. Skyrim VR and I would really like to sse how that enhances the experience - everytime you enter a dungeon/crypt, you get this kind of dusty/damp/zombie scent, and when you wander through the grass lands, it is grassy/flowery, and on the mountains an arctic/snowy scent. I really think it would be interesting to try that out. Perhaps we learn that it wears off quickly and you don’t notice it too much after a couple of hours (sort of the 3D TV effect - it is nice when you pay attention to it, but actually once you are into the game/movie it does not really feel different to the 2D version).

This is exactly one of the strong points of the Pimax modular approach - you can try out stuff and see what works well and what is not rewarding the effort sufficiently. This is how a new technology like VR should be pushed to its limits, always try new stuff and carry on with what works and drop what doesn’t.

I would buy the scent module. It could be like spraying in the face with chemicals that are way too strong and generic. But it could also be something very subtle and actually enhancing the Vr experience. All depends on cost but I’m interested.

This is probably the least disturbing of your posts in this tread…

I am not sure anybody would want to spray too strong chemicals into their face. You can obviously ask for a tear gas and a pepper spray scent module, but I don’t think it will be widely adopted. Seems to be rather specific to say the anarchist riot preparation scene for the next upcoming G8 or G20 summit…

Smelling salts might be handy for nascar edurance races. Lol

Scent of lilly or scent of bar for vr pool and :dart:

I’m afraid Xunshu is our smurfette.

Possibly the best post in 2018. A++

Hi @George, I wanted to say something but didn’t, even though I think VR is still mostly percentage wise men such as myself. Certain posters here feel that this forum is their own personal mens club. I don’t consider myself a moral compass by any means in this regard, since I love women as well, but these comments are in poor taste especially for a public forum IMHo. They owe, the female community or women in general maybe getting into or checking out VR for the first time an apology. You’ll still always have idiots though that will just say whatever comes to mind with totally disregard of anyone else I see it all the time out in public. What a person does and says in the privacy of their own home or with their friends is one thing but on a public forum it does require some tact. Of course the cold and callous will not change.

I will probably never use the smell module, I don’t have faith in the ability of the module to replicate realistic smells, and in real life I can move my head a bit to get my nose out of a line of smell, I don’t want something injected into my nostrils especially chemical based smell probably containing phthalates which have been linked with lower IQ in children.

Now that xunshu said it’s for a Japanese partner i can’t help but think of this.

Could very well be related.

Ok. I understand porn is going to be thriving in VR. It must be, because sex sells. If porn can be attained within VR in a incredible way, VR will be adopted fast. So it is a kind of trade off here. There will be a part of VR for the sexually needy.

Still I’d like to see women participate in the VR world. Not just for being an upgraded bikini for lonely men. What do women want? Do they want anything at all? Are they interested in VR? I really never ever saw a post that purported a women’s view on he Pimax or the possibilities it might open for other purposes.

Men want guns, cars, airplanes and women. Easy. But what do women want? I’d like to hear a womens’view on this.

It’s a good question. You should start a tread with that title. There are less chance you would get answer here in the middle of a thread :stuck_out_tongue:

Of course it varies, but I think women want games that are gender neutral, like Elite Dangerous, or games with a strong female lead character and a deeply emotional story, like Life is Strange.

FYI - Life is Strange is the most emotionally moving game I’ve ever played. At the end (of episode 5) I literally cried. I think that’s the first time that’s ever happened. The game has a few flaws, but is well worth playing, even if it’s not in VR.

Play ā€œTo the Moonā€. That’s the one that got me.

Pimax: why are you wasting valuable time/effort on ancillary trivia like this? Please focus only on getting the 8K working/manufactured/shipped, and also keeping the backers properly informed as your CEO promised.
