Alpha? I didn’t see anything that looked like the 8k v2 prototype. 
The thing is the 12k should in theory launch in 2023 so why miss CES2023 as a launch event?
The other thing is Crystal is the 12k apart from the lenses. Yes small changes here and there.
So when Pimax says Crystal is ready then the 12k is ready.
Pimax does not have infinite money to burn on lenses. It comes a time when they have to pull the trigger.
$40 million of investment now needs to show some return especially when you’re burning around $5 million a year in running costs not including tooling and R&D.
Pimax need to sell 125,000 units at $400 a unit profit to break even over a 2 year period. If Pimax rely on Crystal they better hope Index2 has zero impact on sales.
The pressure to get Crystal out must be extraordinary. It’s literally make or break.
Because you can’t launch a halfbaked device. You will only get bad reviews and media coverage. What do you think Ben from RoadtoVR would write about the crystal ‘launch event’ when it crashes all the time? When they’re ‘launching’ a product when critcial features dont even work or don’t even work like they should? It’s going to be a disaster.
Nah that’s what PimaxUSA has been saying but I don’t see how that’s supposed to be the case, when the resolution of the panels is substantially higher, that’s going to be more difficult to push over the bandwidth. The lenses are going to be really difficult to make, I think (reading between the lines) that they’re going to try to implement dynamic distortion rendering to fix the distortion, but that’s a real difficult task in itself. In many ways it’s going to be a much more advanced device than the Crystal is.
But how much more units will they sell with better lenses? You can’t just look at costs. If they think better lenses can be made, then that surely should be projected against possible extra turnover and profit.

Whoops I missed the screens yep.
I certainly don’t see the 12k being released as a consumer device in the next 6 months. But I do think we’ll see it as a prototype at CES2023.

Those lenses were awesome, MUCH better than the lenses in the XTAL 3! Still can’t believe Pimax declined the help from that StarVR guy to make better lenses. Damn.

Well to be honest always wanted to see how the p1 pimax pro was with what appeared to be the controllers from 3glasses Burbur s1; the first hmd that supposedly had MS endorsement.
The p1 hmds were okay for what they were with the 4k giving us a real glimpse into sde minimization and good res.

That sounds reasonable estimate as there is almost 2 months of that from now is in part downtime due to Chinese NY and spring festival.

That is likely true of any WFoV hmd. StarVR was also the first to use a misnomer of calling there early hmds 5k with adding in specs as 5k wide. The width is accurate as 2xQhd is indeed a legit 5k res vs TV’s Uhd which is not proper 4k and why 1920x1080 was never called called 2k. However TV displays were able to get away with it by stating 4x1080p in classification.
In all fairness though tech industry is alot of copying ideas.
