ok, i want to first start off with saying the good things. yes, version 2.03 does include some nice control’s for quadviews. like the Alpha blend and fine tuning, cropping etc. awesome!!!
but sorry Pimax, you dropped the ball after that and did not even think about user immersion.
Ok lets talk about the issues:
- They included some custom key-bindings but missed the mark with that!!! For example: if you turn on headset custom buttons and pick “volume up/down” - there is no way now to get to the menu and see the desktop, or fps, etc. so now your stuck if you dont have controllers… if you can’t get to the menu anymore!!! what’s the point
- the included a “double tap custom” feature is good. But having “VST” is pointless. VST either does not work, or its something different than what google say it is. google thinks its the VST (Video See-Through).. So what the heck, there is already a button that you enable for “quick passthrough mode” which is a double tap. So pimax which one is it???
- Pimax you still missed the two most import things. Eye-tracking calibration and IPD.
- now i also tried the power off or standby timer and it still does not work. light stays blue. the headset will not power down or go to sleep meaning the displays are on long after the 1m, 20s or whatever you pick. note: the custom-key power on/off does work. so the custom-key does work, but the automatic one does not???
So while this is a step in the right direction, there still needs to be many improvements..and yes they are small that will set this headset apart. its already there in resolution, so hopefully it gets there in user VR immersion
Pimax, you have three (maybe four) buttons on the headset that can be really used nicely if you just listen. i’m not trying to be rude, i’m just trying to help keep VR users in immersion. The moment we have to grab a controller or look for the controller, or navigate to a sub menu we are yanked out of our cars, or jets into fumbling around to get what we need. in-addition i’m sure we all share the headset with a friend over from time to time. setting up eye-tracking, or IPD when you can’t even see what the friend is looking at make it all the more complicated.
imagine now a way you can quickly put on the headset, keep you hands on the controls most of the time without fumbling around, share the headset and have killer awesome resolution. This is what keeps people coming back.
my suggestion to get there:
- You can use the power button as a menu popup. the menu shows IPD, eye-tracking, sleep and default pimax menu. press the button and the menu shows, use the volume controls to navigate the menu items. (option 1…then press the power button again to select.) or (option 2… press the volume middle button to select). whatever is selected is then activated and shown.
- Once the menu item is activated the volume buttons can be used to adjust the IPD in (IPD mode), or navigate the eye-tracking in (eye-tracking mode), or anything else
let me give you a case example**:**
i am flying in DCS, i need to quickly adjust the volume as its to loud. since the volume buttons are default volume buttons, i can do this quickly without needing to navigate to the menu, then move my head green dot to the volume, then try and slide it to the position i need. sometimes we even have to lift the headset to look around. Remember the new custom-keys in 2.03… if you select them as volume you can’t get to the menu so your stuck in other places. so that does not work.
now lets say i share my headset with a friend. with my suggestion above they can simply press the power button and then navigate to the IPD and the eye-tracking and once done back to the game. if they hand that back to me to fly or drive i can repeat and its now setup for me again. right now you have to stop the game, go into the menu, find the options and activate them. after that is all done you have to find the pimax return to game menu and press that. imaging telling a friend how to do all this while you have no idea what they are looking at.
immersion is about staying in the game and not struggling to find where or what you need to navigate too.
power buttons menu can be : Sleep, IPD, eye-tracking, Desktop, pimax menu, FPS, new window etc?
