Pimax Optics AMA @ OpenMR

Dive straight into the world of Pimax optics. Our team will be answering questions on both lenses (aspheric & ConcaveView pancake), clarity, PPD, FoV, distortion tuning, and all the tech that shapes the visual experience inside our headsets.
Whether you want to understand the current lineup or get a glimpse of what’s ahead, this AMA is your direct line to the team.

Leave your questions below—one lucky participant will receive a free VR Display Stand.

With the Crystal Super introducing the world’s first interchangeable optical engine system, how does the distortion profile tuning pipeline differ between the Glass Aspheric (QLED) and ConcaveView Pancake (Micro-OLED) modules?

The image above of the 3 or is it 4, concave pancake lens is obviously not to scale but how do those lens components actually fit together or are they layers within a single component ? This new lens technology is absolutely amazing !

Oh, oh. I love discussing optics. I’m gonna throw out a couple technical ones.

What’s Pimax rational behind the default 1.0/100% resolution target in their HMDs? Is it what the display needs to get a 1:1 Pixel to Display Ratio or is it chosen as a reasonable balance between image quality and performance given the optical stack? Considering the 57PPD has one of the lowest 1.0 resolutions to panel res ratio vs the 50PPD having among the highest, despite using the same panels. Few companies have ever directly confirmed the number they need to render at for a 1:1 pixel to display ratio after distortion correction, but of the one I know(The Quest 2) it required 1.9x panel resolution and that seems unrealistically high on these ultra high res panels.

Similar to above, there seems to be a consensus in the community that pancake lenses require less overrendering for distortion correction than aspheric lenses since the default 100% res on aspheric lens HMD seem to be higher than most pancake HMDs, relative to panel res. Is this true or is it coincidental from different manufacturers choosing different render targets based on various factors, like FoV, given that effects the distortion correction needed?

Lastly, pancake lenses tend to be paired with uOLED since it’s required, but we’ve seen pancake HMDs with LCD, like the Quest 3 and Pico 4. What kind of obstacles would there be to getting incredibly wide FoV(Say 50PPD Super or wider) with pancake lenses while using much larger and eaiser to work with LCD panels? A few companies have demonstrated prototypes of this concept, including Meta’s ultra wide Boba 3 prototype, but thus far nothing’s shipped in a commcercial product.

Do you use AI to generate or improve distortion profiles as Martin did? If not, why?

I have a 57 PPD Super. Will there be a way to fix chromatic aberration on the outside of the sweet spot of the aspheric lenses besides Almalence, which as gone MIA?

Also, will there be a fix for the color blanding issue?

Can you provide the following for Crystal Light and Crystal Super 50ppd :-

Nominal eye relief (optimum)

Eye relief range (usable)

Thanks :+1:
