Could you imagine if they can remove that dirty effect, then the image will look way better and give better immersion… I have heard that there is no mura on the reverb g2,i will compare it when it arrives here at my home.
You made quite a good recreation of the mura, i would say whats visible in my unit is even a bit darker. For now i’ve put my 8KX back into its box, using my good ol’ 5K+ again. Lets see what Pimax suggests to solve this problem.
Best open a ticket to make sure they have your case on the radar.
Pimax didn’t go into detail how the software fix was supposed to look like. The hope would be that they have improved quality control now and use the opportunity to either sort out panels with visible mura or create per-headset correction profiles in the factory and put these into flash parts that are not overwritten by new firmware.
I honestly cannot imagine any other software fix that works without per-unit calibration (besides setting the contrast so low that black equals white…) So probably sending the unit in is unavoidable. But as said, best contact support.
I believe that in order to compensate the mura effect you have to apply a specific filter which is unique for the displays in questions, because the effect itself is different on each panel. I do not see how they could fix it once the headsets are in the wild.
I have really visible Mura as well. I have waited a while for the headset, and I fear to be without headset again for months.
P.A. I also have glare in the form of halos along the Fresnel lines of the lenses. I was about to review this for the IL-2 community, but given that you said this was not normal I’d rather hold off until I know what’s going on.
Thats my fear also…Maybe they can do a advanged RMA if needed
In theory based on pre prototype 8kX model they might be able to have per headset corrections maybe via a json file.
that was also the case with my old star vr one
Thanks, but I think your subjective opinion of whether the replacement unit improves mura will be more useful.
My 5K+ also had no mura. But the one on my 8KX is really strong. NoamLoop, did you file a support ticket? What have they said so far, was there a way to solve it via Software? That’d be preferable.
Yes, I filed a support ticket immediately after I got my 8kX for both the mura and the 118 Hz issue. The latter was worked around (by a new 114 Hz firmware), mura couldn’t be solved by software without looking at my particular HMD yet, so Pimax asked me to send my 8kX in now for investigation. I was told to get a new one without mura. Back on my 5k+ for now, fingers crossed.
Okay, I have filed a support ticket now as well. Holding back with my 8KX review for IL-2 community. The next patch includes a PP fix in IL-2, so it’ll be a fantastic game for Pimax users.
But on my unit with the strong mura… the sky looks dirty and I can really strongly see that there is a screen due to this. I guess I’ve really been unlucky with this 8KX. First the delay to send it, then this.
My 5K+ (204) was a really great unit. None of these issues.
Was honestly a little indifferent whether I should really send in the 8kX or just live with it. The effect is only visible in certain scenarios (against very bright backgrounds) and is imho perhaps comparable with SDE mentally - I can realize it but also easily forget that it’s there once immersed in the game.
There is still so much stuff that the brain has to compensate in current gen headsets that it’s just one other entry in the list.
But on the other hand, if it’s a thing that Pimax can get rid of (and where my headset could be helpful) then I think it’s worth to investigate. So perhaps it might make sense for the others to wait for the diagnostics results from my headset before sending in your 8kX, too.
I don’t think ED sky is uniform color (by design) so mura would be hard to detect. Eg on 5k+ I did not notice any mura but the ED sky was never uniform (on 8kX I did not try ED).
For the record I don’t really see mura on my 8kX. Or maybe some very slight hint of it sometimes. However if you mess with contrast/brightness setting you can get noticeable color banding which might perhaps be mistaken for mura, though this is more noticeable on dark scenes (while mura is usually seen more on bright scenes).
At the end I settled for brightness/contrast at default level, this way I got rid of color banding problem, drawback is that dark scene is slightly less dark compared to brightness -1/contrast +1.
Agreed @neal_white_iii mentioned on a monitor there are gas clouds that are muted out on Oled head displays.
I am lucky, it seems Doman Chen has responded to my ticket. I have heard he is the best technical support.
I just hope he can fix it remotely. I couldn’t stand another month or two without headset…
Fingers crossed. If it helps you can refer to my ticket (#5403).
He is certainly good - perhaps not only the best but also the only second level support technician?
DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING IF MAYBE YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE MURA IN VR HEADSETS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
Moving your head around, while keeping your eyes looking at one place on the screen, against a grainy dark background like Elite Dangerous, shows any mura particularly well. It takes some practice, but it takes more practice to start ignoring it again.
Even when you dont look for it you will see it in bright white backgrounds,or bright skies etc
Yes it pops out as moving objects and this is terrible for immersion. Completely ruins it for me.
