Pimax Crystal - status, updates and fixes (Part 2)

A disappointing video really and nothing we didn’t know already. What about the HUB? What about the Wide FoV lenses. What about the eye tracking?

How is it Pimax post this.

Yet we have no video showing it working? Does not make any sense.

There was supposed to be some announcement about the OTHER set of lenses.

Hmm…

Hi,
Got a new notification from Pimax.
Seems that they re-shipped the Crystal to me with a new FedEx tracking number. Fingers crossed.

some thing i found today while playing some rdr2,in the snowy bright area,it appears the crystal has kind of a sweet spot but not with bluriness but with color,i had a bit of mura horizontal lines noticeable in this bright white world and upon lifting it a bit on my head they were not only gone but colors look even better.

They may have recalled some shipments as said due to 2 reasons:

  1. Possible head strap damage
  2. To ensure glass lenses and not the poly place holders are received.

Just a guess as #2 they did seem to know which orders had been shipped with the temp poly lenses. Either way with the new tracking number congrats! Please share your impressions once you receive and have time!

The small fov with that sized HMD is a bit silly. Hopefully it no longer needs parallel projections atleast?

Oh my Crystal has reached the US. So excited!

Yeah I think that bradley also said there’s a distortion sweet spot.

Hello all. I’ve been lurking this forum since I preorder the Crystal on 2/14/23. Just created an account to let you guys know that I’ve received my Final Payment email today. So, they are at least up to mid February of this year with the preorder list. Just an FYI for anyone who cares.

Also, here is a quote from the final payment email. "This shipment includes the glass lens, HUB Kit, and DMAS upgrade earphones. "

It uses PP but in the same way as the index, always on but the cant is minor enough that it’s a trivial performance hit (3-5%). A lot of people don’t realise the Index uses PP and is always on. With older Pimax headsets, especially at large FOV, parralel projections was a massive performance hit but with the crystal it’s pretty trivial and ensures compatibility across the board so makes it a much more ready experience imo.

Indeed there is a hidden setting or use to be in 9ne of the text config files that you can disable Index pp but as you said no real need to disable. iirc index has 5 to 10 degree canting. Risa2000’s hmdq tool also collects the degree of canting an hmd reports.

Welcome Wreels to the OpenMR Forum! I have bumped your user level by 1 for your convenience.

Congrats!

COLOR PASSTHROUGH?

AUGMENTED REALITY

I forgot all about this, but does the Crystal support this out of the box?

Or is there some faceplate option for this? Plans, announcements, estimates.
If new faceplate, does that kill tracking?

Anyone can link information about this?

There’s a face plate for colour passthrough, or at least one is planned. It has never been shown off or talked about so for now I wouldn’t bank on it. Probably a year out if it ever comes (not saying that in a negative way, it just might be that the demand isn’t there so they simply cancel it). Normal inside out tracking would work with it, but the LH faceplate obviously wouldn’t.

Just figured there were cameras already on the current version of the Crystal, so thought they could be used for that (passthru).

They can, at least in standalone, but they are only black and white (like Quest 2). Haven’t seen them used in PCVR mode yet, not sure if that will ever happen but if I switched the headset to standalone mode and walked outside of the boundary then it would switch on. Very very similar to Quest 2, if not the exact same.

Yeah, for me, Color Passthru in Standalone for AR makes sense.
Even the ability to AR or have a window showing a camera front view while the headset is on while seated makes a lot of sense too.

I mean. Imaging you need to get your bearings for controls of a game, or keyboard, or see something physical in your surroundings even sitting down.

So Color Passthru Stand-alone/wireless and at least B/W for tethered I’d think would be reasonable.
