Any news???
Event was on from the start. They didnât need my PC, because they had 5 already. 3 laptops, 2 desktops. And there were 2 motion rig sims setup with pimax HMDs as well.
Very happy I got to try out their lineup. (Index & Quest owner here)
The 8KX is great. I did have some issue getting it to fit flat on my face (with the new MAS), it wanted to leave the bottom outward from my face. I had to adjust the rear portion a bit higher on my head for it to level out. Iâm guessing that is not their desired positioning, but hard to tell. It was comfortable otherwise.
I was concerned about over tightening it and breaking it on them, so that means there could be some more tightening to fix it. But I thought it was odd that it locked at the angle it did. Seems like they should let it swivel by 10-15 degrees more. I have never used a DAS so it is possible that it behaves exactly the same.
But there is no screendoor effect, the colors seem good for what little demo I did. I noticed some darker blacks in Elite Dangerous. I could read the dashboards almost perfectly clearly in Elite, DCS and another flight sim I donât recall the name of.
75hz is, well 75hz. It was fine for what I played, but I really think I would need 90.
Regarding distortions - I noticed a bit the first time I tried the 8KX (on DCS I think) and there was noticeable warping vertically and horizontally at the edges. They said this was on Normal FOV. Later on, I tried the same headset on large FOV and the distortions at the edge were much less noticeable. This makes me wonder if there was some misconfiguration on the initial go-round - which was the very first demo of the day. So entirely possible my first demo was not a true representation (especially considering the later demo).
The Artisan had limited game coverage, but I tried the finger tracking demo on it. It is functional, but not super accurate. I tried touching my hands together in various patterns, and the fingers were not exactly aligned each time. But it did detect movement fairly well. This is somewhat close to the Quests, and not usable in any fast game - more for menu navigation.
I played Pavlov shooting range with the Artisan. I didnât really get a sense of the headset - I think there was some type of screen alignment issue or something causing double vision. It is possible the unit was broken from all the usage at CES. It certainly isnât how the HMD operates properly I donât think. So I write this off as a broken demo. I had to close one eye to use a rifle scope - while realistic (lol) - I think that was an example of the issue, not gameplay.
I tried the 5k Super. Played Beat Saber. I was not really able to see a difference from the Index at 120 (or even 90). It was smooth, but I think Iâm falling into the camp of 90 is solid and I have trouble noticing higher. Day 1 Index testing I thought I saw improvement at 120 and 144, but not really since then.
Motion rigs - 8KX & 8k+
The 8k+ was fine, I played DCS on this. It was Normal FOV, I think they said it was 90hz, but I could be mis-remembering. Canât really highlight anything about the HMD. Sweviver indicated it needed resolution improvements after I played it, and I didnât return to it. But the motion rig - it was fun! A bit jerky, especially if I accidentally moved the hotas too far. I even landed the planeâŚin the river. haha. But fun immersion addition. This is a âIf I were rich IâdâŚâ kinda thing.
The 8KX rig was a racing sim - Project Cars 2(?) and it was fun as well. The rig gave me the sensation of sliding out, and in my case doing an all around job of making bad driving very immersive.
In summary, the event went pretty smooth. Martin, Kevin and the âhelpersâ were very helpful with the demos It wasnât as busy as the signup sheets, it didnât seem, but I could be mistaken. I left by 4 PM.
Thanks to Pimax for taking the time to host the event! Look forward to the next one in NYC!
Nice to here some more unbiased reviews. Sounds like everything was not as âperfectâ as ces and more info about distortions, optics are coming out which we all need to make the right decisions.
There are not that many impressions,a pittyâŚ
I was there in NYC! Havenât had much time to write an impression but iâll say the 8K-X resolution is legit and the Artisan seems like an improved 5K+(less screen door)

Do you mean it couldnât be angled enough down on the back of your head?
That was how the Vive Pro worked and I could never get it spot on. However, when I moved the Vive Pro strap to my 5K+ using a custom 3d printed hinge that flaw wasnât there because of a simpler design with no lock thingies (Iâm not fluent in english).
I hope that the Pimax hinge doesnât have the same flaw.
In that case - remove the angle lock, Pimax.
Hey guys. It was a busy day yesterday. I will post 2 videos later today from the NYC meetup. Simply didnât have time to do it on-the-fly yesterdayâŚ
All good. Impressive, thanks for the videos.
Both videos are up now, sorry for the delayâŚkinda tired here at the hotel, last day of the trip
Hi sweviver , great job on the videos !!!
Best quote â this is the future nowâ
Hi Martin! It was great meeting all of you and hanging out a bit (even in the cold while Kevin @PimaxUSA took forever to get the van ).
