Pimax Quality is at 1.0, FFR is on Conservative, smart smoothing is off, framerate is 80, and SteamVR is at 50%. Shadows and Volumetric Effects are expensive, so don’t set them to Ultra (unless maybe you have a 2080 Ti).
That’s what I use while exploring. You may need to reduce the res, when you’re around stations or landing on planets. For simplicity, I use the in-game HMD Image Quality setting at 0.85 (instead of 1.0) when my framerate is too low.
I find that I continue to tweak these settings, since my 2080 isn’t quite powerful enough to give me both the quality and framerate I crave. I don’t like using FFR, but to me, Smart Smoothing is worse. The main thing for me is to have small text that is legible, but I need a decent framerate without any major graphics artifacts as well.
I’ve managed to enter elite dangerous and play a few minutes just to setup graphics. I used the settings advised by neal_white_iii from nest post. The image is sharp and beautiful but not very smoth in rendering on movment.
Pitool quality, steamvr resolution, elite dangerous supersampling and hmd quality all sorta compound on each other so id try dropping supersampling or hmd quality inside of ED due to it being possible to test without having to restart the game.
I know some please swear by dropping ingame supersampling all the way down and upping HMD quailty a lot, i know ive tried it but i cant recall the results being any different when it came to performance.
Shadows and ambient occlusion could be turned down a step for more performance as well.
Because of Parallel Projections, ED is a performance monster with Pimax headsets. It’s very difficult to get high clarity and high FPS together, but a good balance can be had if you are willing to play with PT, SVR, and ED settings.
Here’s a step by step guide I made primarily for ED, I hope it will give you some ideas. I have a 2080 Ti and it’s still not enough to max things out.
I would start with the OP’s post which was an insight into SteamVR settings I didn’t previously know. You can get better results when not using PT 1 and Steam Auto, which at first sounds like a safe bet.
Instead, PT 2 and SVR at 0.25 returns better results and he explains why. Not everyone agrees though, but to my eye it works better for ED and I can get better performance from it as a result.
this sucks, your GPU is not suitable for the XR to have a good experience. You will to try find a way to connect an external gpu and something like Rtx 2080.
Or a laptop with a non max q 2080, or non 2070. For a low price option, build a desktop with a rtx 270 super
