How to get Pimax DFR working in OpenVR titles (Pimax EVO + CustomHeadsetOpenVR)
There’s a fair bit of confusion around this one, so here’s the short version: Pimax’s own OpenVR dynamic foveated rendering works fine with CustomHeadsetOpenVR as per Mbuccia support was added for it last month.
The reason people think it’s broken is that Pimax EVO doesn’t expose the foveated rendering toggle in its UI. The setting exists, EVO just doesn’t show it to you. So if EVO is all you’ve ever looked at, it looks like the feature isn’t there. You have to flip it in Pimax Play Classic instead.
Current Versions:
Pimax EVO: (Pimax Play EVO) is v1.0.1 ( build v1.0.1.103)
Sboys CustomHeadsetOpenVR: CustomHeadset-1.3.0-beta.2
Steps
- In Pimax EVO, go to Settings → About → Switch to Pimax Play Classic.
- In Pimax Play Classic, go to Device Settings → Image Performance → Center Rendering, and select the mode you want.
- Go back to the main page of Pimax Play Classic, click Settings in the left pane, and under General Operations choose Switch Window to Pimax EVO.
- Go back in Pimax EVO, enable OpenPort.
That’s it. The setting persists across the switch, so once it’s set in Play Classic, EVO honors it. You only need to do the Play Classic round trip once, not every session.
Notes
- You need CustomHeadsetOpenVR with the recent support added, so make sure you’re on a current build.
- This is the OpenVR path specifically. If a title is running OpenXR it’s a different pipeline and this doesn’t apply.
