Half-Life: Alyx on 8K X

its because hes flopping between 75 hz and 120 hz. ofcourse 120 hz is going to feel better

Even the video of the 8K X on YouTube doesn’t look good because of the lag - it must be pretty bad inside the HMD.

Yes, that’s what Sebastian says, but the worrying thing is the distortion.
It may go to 75Hz, but I think it gives problems in resolution and in fixing the distortion.

Well I got my first headset in 1997 and that is almost 25 years ago so?

I guess I’m lucky that refresh rate doesnt matter to me. I can play on 64 and not notice the difference. So the 75 of the 8Kx doest worry me one bit.

Thanks for testing it out! Is the normal FoV of the Artisan bigger than the small FoV of the 8k-X?
If no, (why) did you still prefer the Artisan? Is it frequency > details for this game?
In that case - please also try out the interpolation mode with higher frequency. Would be interesting which settings for the 8k-X are the most suitable for Alyx in your opinion.

Just out of curiosity, what settings did you have the game set to and what GPU were you using for the 8KX video you made? I didn’t watch the video as I didn’t want to experience any spoilers, but I’d like to know what your settings were.

Would love to see a video of the beginning area and your impressions of how it’s running. I take it you’re using a 2080ti?

Sure… I will most likely start at the beginning and no, I am still only running on a 1080ti and happy to say it ran great even in native mode! []-)

Great news, I can’t wait to get mine. It looks sooooo good on the 5K+, I can’t even imagine how it looks on the 8KX. There are so many jaw dropping scenes it’s insane.

In the Artisan review he mentioned he has a GTX 1080 TI.
Let’s see what comes first, the 3080 (TI) or the 8k-X… (Cannot imagine too many who don’t have a 2080 TI by now will still buy one - I certainly won’t. If the 8k-X comes first and is too laggy then it’s interpolation mode for me in the meantime.)

I was initially wondering if the 1080ti was enough to run the 8KX with this game if it was laggy during Seb’s video, but @vrgamerdude says it runs fine on his system. I’m wondering if @mixedrealityTV had settings that weren’t good for the 8KX.

I’m also still puzzled that some people report that there is almost no distortion and others that it’s disturbing enough that a smaller FoV is preferrable.
Perhaps it’s really a question whether one has a ā€œsweetspot IPDā€ for which the lenses are optimized or a bigger/smaller one?
E.g. I have an IPD of 64 and only see very slight distortions with large FoV and almost none with normal with the 5k+.

yeah I didn’t change any settings… Just fired it up and hit play. There were only 2 times I remember a slight feeling that I was dropping frames and those were both right after heavy loading scenes so IDK? For comparison my full system specs are:

I7 7700K
16 GB Ripjaws @3200mhz
Zotac GTX 1080ti AMP Exteme
MSI Z270 GAMING M7 mobo

Yep… Spent a good 20 minutes just on that damn balcony after the game loaded the first time just looking out across City 17… It looked so damn real with the high res and no SDE abd then when the first Strider appeared I was all like []-o

I can truly say that this headset is gonna blow some peoples freaking minds… It aint perfect but it’s the best headset I have ever used!!! []-)

Sounds good. Perhaps they really should drop the normal MAS though… If people pay that much they probably don’t mind paying +$100 as much as having inadequate audio.
What was your impression with the audio?

It’s not bad on the prototype I have currently but what I have is not the final unit. I would rate the audio quality that I am getting from the pre-production MAS as better than the Rift S/Quest but no where near as good as the Index!

Thanks! Have neither tested a Rift S nor an Index yet. Do you know the Vive DAS? Is it in the same league?

Yes I have a DAS on my 5K+ and Quest and no… the Pimax MAS audio quality is no where near as good as the Vive DAS or at least not in the prototype I have. For me I always prefer a good set of headphones over these new off ear solutions anyway
so I am more interested in the deluxe strap from Pimax once it is ready.

That sounds amazing. Same here, I definitely want the Pimax deluxe audio strap with mine too. Has there been an update about the DAS?
