Half-Life: Alyx on 8K X

What!? It has dynamic resolution scaling. Nooooo. Please tell me there is a way to disable that!

Agree, I came from an OG HTC Vive, and it was fantastic seeing the 5K+.
I ordered the index to use as My 5K+ had to be RMA, going down to the small FOV was a big drop, But I got use to it after about 10 minuets, The problem became apparent to me after I got My 5K+ back, the image going off to the far left and right changes shape very slightly as it traveled across the screen and puts me off. Only waiting on the stretched goals with the MAS/DMAS and the Pimax is going to be sold.

Seb complained about eye comfort… the main points he brought up against the 8kX were :

1_the binocular overlap
2_peripheral distortions

He said that he did not experienced these issues with the Pimax Artisan though and will try Alyx with the Artisan today.

While the result might seems surprising, as some already said, I think Alyx might be especially optimized for the Index (a bit like in a closed system). Also the fact he ran 8kX at 75fps with Parallel Projection while it was at 120fps in the Index might have an impact on comfort and sharpness. @mixedrealityTV if you do this kind of A to B comparison with other games on equal refresh rate would you still experience similar differences? Member risa2000 is discussing Alyx rendering method here : https://community.openmr.ai/t/half-life-alyx-on-pimax-8kx/26531/22?u=mimaximax

I remember feeling eye discomfort with my 5K+ ; that sensation was less present with my HP Reverb. I don’t remember seeing better 3D effects with the Reverb though but it was less fatiguing. If the Index was in stock I would have bought a full bundle with Alyx waiting for my 8kX. I could then see for myself, compare the two headsets and probably selling the Index while keeping the bases and controllers.

Hi there,

the Index doesn’t LOOK better than the 8K X, but for this game, I had a more enjoyable experience. Due to: better sound (my preproduction model does not offer great sound), undistorted picture, way higher refresh rate and better colors. (again, I have a preproduction model like used on CES 2020, that’s what I am talking about)

The 8K X will be better than the Index in other games, like sim games where you really need to read the gauges etc.

But in direct A/B comparison here I (personally) had a way better time now on the Index and I am pretty sure lots of people would have the same experience.

Nothing to get angry about. You can and will still enjoy your 8K Plus which from all I saw from my preproduction model is a very fine headset, just like the Artisan, which I like even more.

Sincerely, Sebastian

Thanks for your answer! What about the binocular overlap, sharpness of 3D effect and eyestrain?

More importantly than gauges (for me at least for racing sims) seeing well far ahead.

The higher resolution will be great for seeing more far ahead. The binocular overlap is not so great here due to maximizing the FOV. I am gonna play Artisan today and directly compare that again.

whut? my comment was not directed toyou but a reply to the post of quantent… about mrtv recommending the index

You’re doing great work and keep at it. Your content and presentation skills have evolved greatly since you started which demonstrates someone always willing to take feedback and improve. Really appreciate all the work you’re doing esp for the more “hardcore vr” audience which often gets left behind.

The biggest advantage of the Index is probably that most SteamVR game developers use it as reference headset by now (previously the Vive), so for most things it’s fine to leave everything at the default settings.
The posting of Sweviver is a good example: When one is able and willing to fine tune the settings for a particular game then it looks as if one has more options for optimization with the 8k-X - high resolution, high FoV, high (enough) framerate, low CPU usage etc. are possible goals. To get optimal results one has to know quite some options (or look up the forums). Not everything works equally well for every game and some of these optimization goals are mutually exclusive.
Per-game optimizations in PiTool (similar to what NVIDIA Experience does) would be great! Then this would leave only two things to adjust - IPD and (depending on sensitivity/IPD in the sweetspot or not etc.) the FoV, two things that usually can stay the same for most games for the same person.

Am really looking forward to the 8k-X preview from MRTV!
Don’t always come to the same conclusions, but what usually works imho well is the differentiation between stating facts and giving personal opinions. One can easily tell which is which. That’s all I ask for. Imho (despite best efforts) a truly unbiased person doesn’t exist - but at least he tries

Hi Sebastian
Could you try HL-Alyx on the 8K X with the scaler enabled, if the firmware is 120hz compatible this should give you a better apples 2 apples comparison :grinning:
I know it will not render native 4K but at least it will have the better panels and upscaling prob. equal to 8K+ just higher refresh.

Cheers
Martin

Thank you Sebastian for the content I trust and value your opinion. I am very happy with my Index it’s the complete plug and play package. I wonder if the 8Kx is for me. I do also like apple products.

I read somewhere that Index has 110 horizontal FOV. Actually in my 5K+ with 120 degrees (using 120hz) for me it’s horrible. I had to change it to 90hz and normal FOV again (140 degrees).

110 vs 140 degrees is a long distance when you play this game.

Yeah, I don’t know why people are saying the distortion is an issue on the Pimax. Maybe it’s because I’ve owned my 5K+ for quite some time now, but I really don’t notice the distortion when playing games. I feel Half Life Alyx looks stunning on the Pimax, and the wide FOV really sets it apart from the other headsets. Using the Vive DAS mod, the Pimax is quite comfortable and the sound is plenty good enough to me.

Yes… it will be better than any headset currently out there! Playing Half-Life Alyx last night in my 8kx prototype was the best VR experience I have ever had and I have been doing VR for almost 25 years now! Was also going to stream it but decided after waiting over 12 years for this I would like to experience it personally first and soak it all in. Going to try to record over the next couple of days so look for my video of Alyx being played in the 8kx here soon!

Love when people say something like this

The thing that struck me most about @mixedrealityTV 's 8K X and Index videos was the smoothness of movement on the Index vs the 8K X which looked quite laggy. This lag was the first thing I noticed and thought to myself, jeez, is it really that wobbly? I guess the lower refresh rate does make quite a difference, and if Sebastian had some other discomfort issues, I can see how the Index would be preferable overall. I have to say that I’m not sure any longer about upgrading to the 8K X from my 5K+.

Sebastian (@mixedrealityTV) talks about distortions in the Pimax 8KX, but better image on the Artisan.

I think 8kx it’s the best choice for fly Simmer…no for car Simmer because of only 75hz

Competitor of Index it’s Artisan not 8KX
Because of:

  • No Distorsion
  • Less GPU Demand
  • 120 hz
  • Pricing

The real problem of Artisan it’s audio System …no present in the standard version…and even with 4kp audio It Will be worst than Index.
With D MAS … maybe Who know…but the price whould be too High…

So Artisan with P4K can be an alternative of Index but with less comfort and worst audio…

Dear all!

Today I streamed Half-Life Alyx using the Pimax Artisan and I really loved the experience!

And also here, I enjoyed it more than on the 8K X. The Artisan just strikes this nice balance of wide FOV without distortions (!) and high refresh rate. No question, the image is better on the 8K X, but I felt more immersed in the Artisan, because I did not have to change to small FOV in order to get a distortionless picture. Also the 120hz that I constantly reached did make a difference. I had no eye strain at all and I played for more than 4h nonstop (I had a German language 3h stream just before that).

Just to make it clear again, I had no performance problems in the 8K X at all. I had constant 75fps and the picture quality looked fantastic. Better than on Index and Artisan, but still something was off. The distortions together with the lower refreshrate, it did make a difference and for my (!) playing experience, I had a better time in both the Artisan and the Index.

For all people who ordered the 8K X though: if you want it for playing simulations you will surely love it. If you need the highest resolution to read the the gauges and all the details, you will enjoy it for sure. All those cockpit games are nice.

The final production model of the 8K Plus is on its way to me, and I am looking forward to try it with Alyx as well!

Bye, Sebastian

As a customer of the Pimax 8KX, you leave me rather worried.
I hope it’s because of a faulty unit or bad firmware.
Did you notice these problems on the roadshows?
