FS2020 VR + Pimax Discussion

Hi Super27, is it possible for you to send me the Pimax steam RV full settings and also your Matt 2020 be full settings, I have tried as you suggested and am still getting a very jittery cockpit, appreciate your help, regards John

Hi,
FRAPS is only an old fps display program and not really needed for MSFS. It only shows me the actual fps on my monitor and is not visible in VR. Take a look at the left upper corner of my screenshots above. The yellow “60” is the FRAPS fps.

Hi John,
My settings are really default. Just make sure that in SteamVR the setting for “SteamVR Home” is set to OFF, otherwise SteamVR will launch the “steamtours.exe”, which kills my GPU and makes MSFS grind to a halt.
I will send you my Pimax settings and my MSFS settings in a PM, since they are basically just duplicates of my screenshots above.

could it be that by launching SteamVR through pitool and FS after that by Geforce (or steam) FS gets all settings you set in pitool for steamvr including PP ON? thats probably why you dont have artifacts any more.
There seems to be no way to play with PP Off and without artifacts. Correct me if i am wrong, PLEASE

I would expect that starting another VR app will kill SteamVR Home (as it normally happens with OpenVR apps). Do you say that when an app runs over OpenXR (as MSFS does) it runs in parallel with an OpenVR app?

steamvr also has a ‘reset seated position’ quick button on the bottom right of the overlay

Hi,
What happened was that after a while, like less than an hour, all of a sudden my fps went to nearly zero. After looking at the task manager found that steamtours.exe was running using 70% of my gpu.
Turning off Steam Home prevented steamtours.exe from starting up. I have no idea why steamtours would start after some time.

mmm the Ge-force experience part of my post as i stated may not be required (it isn’t) as previous i don’t use pp never have and my headset doesn’t go into it when i start steam VR thru the Pitool app or msfs2020 so yes there is a way to play with PP off as its off for me (and i’m guessing many others). the artefacts occur if you start steam VR on its own see earlier post and response from another who confirms this.

True, but this was only resetting the view within the rendered image displayed at a 90 degree angle, if this makes sense. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.

ok. i give some more tries. maybe its PE that is causing the artifacts when launching, no idea.

are you using steam vr beta? and have you imported it into pitools?

Whoah!!! Just applied this Nvidia hotfix and HUGE improvement!

how much fps do you gain?

FPSVR latency statistics? And which GPU are you using?

  1. Getting solid 37-38 smart smoothing fps. Really good.

Sounds great. I can’t get more than 29fps, and I’m averaging around 25. That’s with settings tuned down in FS2020 VR to 60% with all settings at medium or low (or off in some cases) and with Pitools set to 150FOV and 1.5 quality. My steam settings are set down to less than 4k as well.
My system has an I9-9900, 32 megs of ram, and an MSI 3090 GPU. (Since I Updated my nvidia driver and did the hotfixThis system averages 73 fps with higher settings in DCS. I’m puzzled and frustrated.
ugh. I’ve been fighting with it for a week, and I’m done until they do an update or two.

Is this the same registry edit that this guy is talking about here

How to install OpenXR for various headsets

The main problem with FS2020 is the extreme CPU utilization and the GPU being completely bottlenecked.
Been trying to optimize the CPU utilisation by using Process Lasso and Process Hacker mixing various Affinity and Priority with no real improvement.

For now, I have settled by running a high Render Quality in PiTool (1.5), keeping the in-game render scale at 100 and lowering the SteamVR SS to 30-ish, giving me a resolution of around 3400 pixels wide.

Framerate goes all between 45+ down to 25 but its mostly fully playable on 8KX. It does look sharp, way sharper than RQ 1.0 and SteamVR 80% for some reason, despite same framerate. Still far from perfect in terms of image quality and sharpness, but thanks to usage of TAA, its already now way better looking than XPlane11VR.

I haven’t managed to get it running in Oculus OpenXR mode, which I believe could give some extra performance and more smooth Smart Smoothing at 75Hz, but I will keep on trying different methods.

Either way, wow this sim really is amazing in VR thanks to the scenery and high graphical level. With better CPU utilisation and DX12 im sure this will be a smooth experience sooner or later.

Btw, have also been testing a temporary 60Hz firmware on 8KX, but to my surprise the Smart Smoothing introduces micro judder no matter what I do, while 75Hz can get SS butter smooth. Probably because the firmware isn’t finished yet…

I an flummoxed. I installed the nvidia hotfix and now run DCs with 1.0 pixel density and slightly reduced settings and get a steady 73-74 Fps.
Can’t quite get to 30fps in fs2020 even with in game res of 70% and supersampling at 20% in steam.
When checking my steam config, i noticed my gpu speed settings were all at zero.
That could explain some of the trouble, but why do I get near max fps on DCS?
I even tried upscale mode in Fs2020, and it was wirse! 15 fps.
It’s got to be a settings issue!

As far as I can tell, the Nvidia Hotfix did nothing for the performance. Maybe reduced the occasional micro judder/stutter but the average frame rate is still the same.
