FS2020 VR + Pimax Discussion

Funny thing i’m pretty sure Pimax said they we going to put some of that investor $$ into joining the OpenXR thing.

I wonder if they did?

What would really be nice is if OXR supported canted displays and no PP

My problems with my 8kx and FS2020 are worse than what I’ve read on here.

I managed to get the VR view working after using the SteamVR beta, and I did get to take off in the Cessna with an fps of about 20 (i9 9900k and RTX2080ti).

I was initially getting the distorted views and an overlay of the dev mode panels, so I switched off dev mode and restarted.

The jitters gradual build up though, and then I get a text window with some sort of error report listing (lots of numbered code lines), then the whole thing locks up the PC and even ctrl alt del doesn’t work, I have to switch the machine off and restart.

xPlane 11.5 is working really well in VR with the 8kx, so I guess it’s all to do with FS…

Joining the OpenXR thing is pretty harmless . The current situation is that there is no “driver standard” (AFAIK) which would allow a HMD OEM plug-and-pray its headset into someone else’s infrastructure.

You can write a driver for OpenVR (SteamVR) for which the API is semi-public. There is no equivalent for Oculus runtime and good luck for WMR.

Where the consolidation started to happen is the client API where different actors are providing more or less compliant OpenXR client side which exposes the already established stack (SteamVR, Oculus, WMR) through yet another API. This is supposed (and I hope will) help application writers to use one API and run on any VR subsystem. Which is definitely a good thing in a long term. This however does not help in any way to HMD OEMs who still have to deal with proprietary APIs (if they are even allowed).

Or not. Pimax can write the complete rendering/tracking stack themselves and then expose it through OpenXR to the client. I.e. not rely on any third party software. But this is much more difficult than just do an OpenVR driver.

To bad motion smooth dont work in potato. I refunded anyways and i hope they disregard the 3 hours it took to download on my play time. Just not worth it for VR at this time.

Try turning off PP. it kills FPS

The VR mode have definitly something wrong in term of perf.
Even lowering mostly everything and in small FoV and all and all I get only 5 or 10 fps gain.
Which make it run at 30fps or so instead of 20…lol

you mean brainwarp doesn’t work in potato? I’ve never used it so I can’t verify this.

right? no matter what I do, all I get is 20 fps or less!

FWIW here are my suggestions
1 in pitool turn off everything except hidden area mask - no brainwarp ffr or PP etc and set pitool render quality to 1.25
2 start steamvr from within the Pitool app
3 in ms 2020 reduce all settings to low initially in vr tho i have cockpit display refresh to high and bloom is off
4 render scaling is as close to my pimax 5kxr that can be achieved 2672 x 2272
5 i also run an over clock on mt 2080ti using afterburner core power and temp to max +90 on core clock and + 1000 on memory

my processor is a 9900k running at 5.1ghz all cores i have 64G of ram at 3600mhz

i get a very smooth experience at between 35- 40 fps depending on map /plane etc

vr1.PNG vr2.PNG fpsvr

hope this helps

Hi, for those who are new to getting this to work would it be possible for some of the more experienced users here to outline in step form what we need to do to get this to work, i.e 1. Use Pitools version x, 2. use steam vr beta? (from where) basically listing the steps to at least get the 8kx running. Maybe a table that has 3 basic setups, (i7, 1080ti), (i9, 9900k 2080ti) etc.

Hoping someone can help, kind regards

Hi,

Here is how I launch MSFS in VR:

My computer specs: i9 10900k @ 5.1 Ghz, 32 GB RAM, GTX 1080 TI, Nvidia 460.89 driver, SteamVR 1.15.16, Pitool 1.0.2.087

After turning on my computer, I start Pitool and do the „Pimax swirl“ with my 8kx to establish a connection to my single lighthouse.

Once the connection is made, I launch SteamVR from „My Games“ within Pitool.
Parallel projection OFF. Render Quality at default (1).

Then I start FRAPS, which I use as a fps counter.

Next I start MSFS in monitor mode. (Not in VR)
I have left all the settings inside MSFS at default.

After the flight has loaded, I reduce the window size to minimum on my monitor.

Now I switch to VR mode in MSFS.

DO NOT switch back and forth between VR and 2D (monitor) mode! This will kill your fps for some reason.

Hope this helps,

Werner

My 2D (monitor) settings, in MSFS:

My VR settings in MSFS: With these settings I get about 25 - 30 fps in VR, which is still flyable with my 8kx.

Isn’t EyeTracking supposed to solve this kind of problem as far as performance issue? What better game to demonstrate this technology than MS Flight Simulator?

people in this thread have already reported that FFR/DFR doesnt work on this one (medal of honor, for example, works great though)

I always had HT disabled but with FS2020 I was getting a really bad flicker as if the left eye couldn’t keep up with the right eye, I reset my bios to the default settings, including HT enabled and the flicker has now gone. I’m using a Ryzen 7 3700x, evga gtx1080ti, 32gb Corsaird Vengence 3200 ram and a standard 1TB HD, and a Pimax Artisan with FOV at small, PP on SS off, Mask on, 90hz everything set at low or medium and I can get a reasonable flight.
Also for those getting headset not detected make sure that in SteamVR, Settings, Developer that the Current Open XR Runtime is set to SteamVR, I tried Microsofts Open XR and I got HMD not detected.

Cheers

Same problem here! I’m on a Pimax 8KX: Both eyes seem to be rendered a 90 degree angle to where I’m facing and the rendered view sticks to 90 degrees to where I’m looking when I move my head.

All other VR applications render fine and I cannot bring the rendered image to the front. Any ideas how to resolve this would be much appreciated.

Note: the image on screen looks line, only the rendered mage in the headset is displayed at a 90 deg angle.

FIXED: What eventually fixed it for me: Doing all calibrations and room setup facing the way where the rendered image was displayed, in my case 90 degrees to the left from my seated position. Hope this is useful to any of you having similar issues.

Been playing around with settings today and it appears that either the instrument panel or the propeller effect is tanking FPS. There was a brief moment when I was looking left out the window when I was seeing ~50-60fps.

We’ll get there folks. @SweViver

the 8Kx is driving me nuts. I have no idea what’s going on, but sometimes I get 50plus FPS in DCS and 38 in FS20 VR, other days, I struggle to hit 25 fps in both of them.
It doesn’t help that the various set up routines in the games, steam, Pimax pitools and PE dont’ ever seem to agree on what settings are, much less what they should be, and appear not to like each other much.
Some days, I start pitools and see completely different settings in it (for everything from IPD to FOV) than are shown in the PE. Then trying to configure steam settings along with game settings and bring some sort of positive result out of this Rube Goldberg menagerie of mechanisms becomes impossible.
I uninstalled the PE. I’d LIKE to uninstall pitools completely, right down to the profiles of the games, and just start over.
I should be getting much better performance than sub 30fps in FS2020 and sub 40fps in DCS on a machine with an I9 9000 with 32 megs of fast ram, and an Nvidia 3090.
Argh!@

Why on EARTH do we need so many levels of settings? Good grief. It should set and forget, not set, reset and regret over and over.

Thank you Super, I will try the suggestions you made and get back to you. I was able to get it running but when I move my head it was quite jittery, otherwise it was not really fly able. I don’t have frappe installed but will do to see what happens. I also seem to have a msg bug where my graphics settings are not saved and I have to reset every flight?, thanks again and will respond soon, John
