Face Mask Update: Injection Molding, USB-C Access & Shipping Timeline

If you’ve already received your Dream Air or Dream Air SE, or you’re about to, here’s an important update on the new face mask that is being developed.

What’s Coming

Many of you may have already seen the new mask previewed in an MRTV video. After testing across a wide range of users, the feedback has been consistent: it’s a meaningful improvement. The increased surface area delivers noticeably better comfort and fit, and also brings people closer to the lenses, expanding the FOV and further increasing the amazing clarity the Dream Air and Dream Air SE have to offer. These new masks are nearly ready. We expect them to ship out by the end of June.

Why Injection Molding

We chose injection molding for the face mask production. It takes longer to set up than alternatives like 3D printing, but the results are worth it at this scale.

Injection-molded parts are made from a single continuous pour of material, which means no internal weak points. The result is a more uniform, dense material structure with better tensile strength, impact resistance, and fatigue life. There are also no layer lines, which are one of the more significant sources of weakness in 3D printed parts.

This is why there’s a longer lead time, and why we’re confident the wait is worthwhile.

USB-C Port Access

We’re also working on opening up access to the USB-C port on the top of the headset. The current mask (left) doesn’t include a cutout for it, but the new one (right) will allow users to access the USB-C port.

Shipping Timeline Estimate

  • Once the new face mask is ready, new orders will ship with the new mask. This is expected to be at the middle or end of June.
  • Customers who already received their headset with the current mask will have the new one shipped separately.

We’ll share more as production wraps up. Thanks for your patience while we get this right.
