the old gen headsets needed a lot of modding to get the comfort levels right for extended use. I’m hoping the Dream Air is much more usable out of the box with its small form factor and low weight.
That said, there are still questions about the standard headstrap (am aware there’s new ones coming down the line from Pimax) and face cushion.
I’ll wait until I receive mine before reaching for any 3rd party options, but just wondering if anyone has already found improvements that they recommend. Eg I see Studioform Creative are offering a few things now.
I received mine yesterday and modded it immediately. The comfort would probably be fine, at least on the back strap, but I didn’t like how inflexible the material was and having to unlatch the Velcro strap. So before I even got the headset I ordered a 3D printed adapter for the AVP dual knit band, as well as the dual knit band itself. I learned of the mod through a Pimax email.
I also ordered the Studioform face gasket that hasn’t started shipping orders yet. It’s a 3D printed one that clips on and doesn’t require any magnets. However, even without this in hand yet, it’s already very comfortable with the dual knit band supporting additional weight on my head and not my face, and I was able to play around with the Dream Air yesterday for a few hours without the face pressure being too uncomfortable.
I’m gonna be posting a quick impressions post on the subreddit this weekend sometime.
Thanks! They’re still shipping with the temporary face gasket as well, and not the new one Martin showed in a recent video. So worth keeping that in mind as well. I just generally find studioform’s products are always more comfortable than a comparable Pimax one
Just received this for my Dream Air courtesy of the design by designer Ancillary and made by print shop surface scan here in UK £37 including tax and shipping
I only received it today so haven’t had the chance to assemble yet. But it certainly has more room than the stock Face mask base so looking promising already. I tried without the face mask and experienced a noticeably larger fov but without lens distortion
If you own a printer or have access to printing facilities, here is a face mask that I believe is one of the best currently available. I tried the one mentioned earlier, but I found that it didn’t fit the Dream aiR properly. This one fits perfectly; it’s very pleasant and comfortable to wear. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Here it is. Had to cut down a third party cushion to fit the smaller plastic base.
Sourcing two screws for the top as the much larger base is more prone to coming loose compared to the small stock setup, the 3d print is a little rough in places so will clean up after testing the new fit tomorrow
Added 2 x M2 screws which has firmly bolted the 3D printed piece to the headset - a huge improvement as it’s tricky to fit/ lock into place and I didn’t want it constantly coming loose which happened several times when handling/fitting cushion.
There is a light leak where the USB ports is now exposed will place a piece of tape to block.
