Dissapointed in the quality? Performance?

I know at one time jvc d-ila projectors had awesome reviews are they still consider as such?

Was over 10 years ago now. Was one if the first time heard of SDE & how JVC d ila projectors were good at the time for pic quality.

8K projector for home use? No, even if it’s actually 8K. Also, it’s “$17,999 (£18,599, around AU$25,000).” I think a native 4K HDR projector would be awesome for a home theater. I suspect 8K (which has almost no content) wouldn’t make sense until you get into actual theater dimensions. But even then, last I checked the most updated theaters use 4K…

That model is 4K native not 8K. They use E shift upscaling to sharpen the picture which works pretty well. I have the current X5900 with 4K E shift. These 3 native 4K models will replace the current 1080P models and will cost the same retail price. I think the price your quoting is for the 4K native Laser projector. EDIT: Your right that price is for the top model replacing the X9900. From what our local retailer told me the N5 and N7 will be priced the same as the current models

Yes. I have the current X5900 with 4K eshift (1080P native) which works surprisingly well. Best thing about the JVC projectors is the contrast. Dark scenes light up like a firecracker :slight_smile: These 3 models coming out next month are native 4k!! Finally we are advancing to 4K LCD! The top end unit will have 4K - 8K Eshift

I hate to ruin the party, but first of all if a company having 5+ years of experience with high-end wide FoV headsets gets it running on a 3,000$ model, and apparently needs grotesque GPU power to demo the foveated rendering (which is supposed to lower the GPU load… ha ha ha) it doesn‘t bode too well for any transfer to consumer level headsets any time soon, certainly not by a garage company like Pimax (not meaning o offend them, but they have a handful of engineers and are working without huge facilities & funds for R&D).

And let‘s assume Pimax get it done, amaze all of us, but will we be able to utilize in our favourite games ? Which further parts of the puzzle must fall into place to give us what we want ? Engine support, sure. On the main branch ? And will the devs of the games have to implement it ? In that case forget about it - that will only happen when Oculus and HTC implement it in their next gen headsets.

So as much as I would hope it materializes soon, it seems a long shot to get all pieces into place.

Agreed, VR is such a limited market right now. It will take quite a while before foveated rendering is commonly supported in games like Elite Dangerous, which use a custom graphics engine.

It’s ok, no party has been ruined. It’s just a conversation. In answer to your question:

3000 dollar model. I think most of that is the custom lenses and screens. I can’t prove that though of course.

5+ years dev. Yes, good point, but we don’t know how much of that was the lenses and multiple purpose built screens. It may be that the eye tracking was pretty easy? We don’t know that yet.

Game support. Fair enough. But a few points here. At a bare minimum games designed ‘for’ VR, as opposed to ported, will almost certainly support stuff like this going forward if the hardware is there. 2) Do we know nothing can be done hardware side at all irrelevant of game support? I have no idea here. 3) Even if we can’t do a lot with foveated rendering initially we can still fall back on lowering the res as has been suggested, for the games that don’t support it.

Overall you could be totally right, but I still think its worth FOCUSING on trying to get the 8K-X up and running and feeding it cute tiny baby grapes it can handle, rather than trying to squeeze all our melons through a colander with the 8K. Nom nom nom!

The point of the 3,000$ is that the chosen eye-tracking solution may also be more expensive than what Pimax can justify for a consumer-priced headset. But yes, we do not have enough information to make any proper assumptions here, that is absolutely true. And the same goes for the game support, I would hope that it would simply be added on the engine level and the game developer wouldnot even notice it is being used - but the same could have been hoped for with SLI, and we all know how well that worked out. And that is around for many years already and still hardly ever utilized.

But I believe FR will be different to SLI, because it lowers the funds required by the consumer to get high qulaity results rtaher than raise them like SLI would do, and I fear that was the fundamental issue with SLI all along, and that prevented the industry from really pursuing it.

So my not very bold forecast is that we will see FR come to VR in the next 2-3 years, but it will only happen when either both or one of the big players release a complete, convincing and affordable (up to 1,000$ for the whole package) next gen headset utilizing FR as a standard feature supposed to be applied in regular operation. Whether StarVR or Pimax have a suitable eye-tracking solution for FR on board or not will only make a difference for a couple of tech demos and the odd program or game where the dev makes it his pet project to implement it for the very few of his clients who can put it to use.

But yes, of course I would really love to see Pimax spearhead this development nevertheless, because it would mean we could at least use these few implementations and in addition the Pimaxes would be ready for FR when it appears on the grander scene.

So where do you fall on this debate then?

Continue to work on the 8K after shipping? New upscaler maybe? New screens? More panel utilisation (if that’s actually an issue)?

(Or) 8K is done now. Just ship it and all effort from now goes into designing and making the X?

(Or) Some kind of percentage balance in between? 80/20 etc

No idea why they would bother selling the 5k

5k+ is probably going to be the main seller for a while and has reached a reasonable stage of maturity.

8k has room for improvement and is probably likely due for a hardware upgrade iteration beyond this current version.

8kx is too niche and probably won’t have enough takers. Especially if the backers insist on rushing it out where it requires a two gpu setup instead of a newer single video input type… I doubt they will make more beyond the initial batch with a forced dual gpu setup…Backers wishing for this too early will only end up shooting themselves in the foot for this reason. Unless dual gpu setups are more natively supported within games, Pimax would have to do some dodgy non standard hackary which wouldn’t be good from a long term standpoint. This is why I’d rather wait until better high bandwidth video input standards are adopted and available more widely across the board.

I don’t think anyone is saying rush it out are they? I’m talking about a single gpu 2080ti setup as their base objective. Then spending time looking into virtuallink, dsc, etc. I’m just saying that’s what I’d like them to be looking into now. Not that I want it release now. I think they could should capitalise on being the front runner with the 5K+ and then be ready with 8K-X out in front of the competition.

I don’t see what can be improved much on the 8K. Yeah maybe smaller screen? Maybe work on the upscaler? MRTV’s latest vid shows that even maxing out SS barely improves the 8K. He still prefers the 5K+ native. But really it’s not going to be huge gains. I think trying to scale up production on the 5K+ and make it as affordable as possible to get more adoption is the way to go. Then drop the 8K-X when it’s READY.

Obviously the caveat to this is, if I’m talking rubbish and they do suddenly smash some bad issues with the 8K and change the screens etc and it becomes really awesome after the backers receive theirs… I’m glad I’m not a backer, eek! :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s awesome. Have you compared these to the 4k laser projectors Linus used in his 12k misnomer demonstration?

Xtal is using a custom made solution. StarVR One is using Tobii.

Easy. 5k panel inventory & likely cost less. 5k could be priced at a more friendly price point vs 5k+ & 8k.

And chances are they have either inventory of panels for the 5K on hand or contract to purchase them. Gotta do something with all those panels!
