Of all the tech I have ever purchased this is the worse! My eyesight is excellent, do not use specs. I done a lot of research including many YouTube vids about the Crystal Super over several months. I have a RTX3090, 64GB ram. I plan to upgrade my MB, CPU and GPU, soon. My present system is still well above the minimum spec required for the Super. I have a Quest 3 VR. I have been working and building PCs for over 25 years. The setup was fairly straightforward after updating the Nvidia drivers. Open XR is set. All Pimax software and firmware updated. The Super is brighter than the Q3, but the clarity and stability is worse. Even with adjusting some game settings, makes No difference? The contrast is far too intense on the Super, the whites glare and bleed over, there is colour fringing on the edges, and shaking on some games, adjusting the headset position helps a little but not much. The position keeps changing, does not save, in a game I am below the floor or ground level, and have to go through the room setup again. Very concerning is that the PC gets extremely hot with the Super connected, the hottest its ever run! Its like having a fan heater blasting on the side of my face! I cant play ANY VR games with the Super, the quality is too poor, compared to the Q3. The Quest 3 although not as bright, is clearer, NO colour fringing, et, and very stable, and the PC runs cooler. Even in Air Play with Virtual Desktop. I have packed the Super back in its box!
I understand you said you’re going to upgrade but the most important question for anybody really is what is the current system exactly?
Thanks for reply. I have contacted someone who uses the Crystal Super with a RTX3070 and has the same CPU as mine and 32GB ram. He says the frame rate is not as high as a higher spec PC but the clarity is superb, and says it does not overheat his PC, Crystal Super must be faulty. My PC spec Intel i9-11900K, 64GB ram, RTX3090 24GB, 1000w PSU. 4TB Gen4 NVMe SSD. My supplier said the Super must be faulty. Waiting to hear from Pimax, they will probably send me another optical engine. The supplier said do not connect the Super to my PC until reply from Pimax. I did consult Pimax before purchase with my PC spec and they said my spec was fine. I am planning a new upgrade MB, CPU, and GPU very soon, a 4 or 5 series Nvidia GPU.
Update. I am still waiting for reply from Pimax. I connected the Crystal Super again, but still having bad image quality, and shimmering? I have tried ALL the settings in Pimax Play, (Refresh 90 & 72 Hz, Lighting set for 50Hz correct for UK, Open XR set, et. Not only does my PC not liking the Pimax, BUT Steam VR does not like it either? The floor level keeps re-setting, does not save, finding myself under the floor or ground? Steam VR apps either will not start or take several minutes to start. In my Quest 3, Steam VR apps start instantly. The Quest 3 works perfectly, as standalone or with the PC and Steam VR. Nothing wrong with my PC. Also to say I do NOT have both the Pimax or Quest 3 connected at same time, and the Q3 PC App is closed, The Pimax Crystal Super UW must be faulty!? What a shame!
What’s the ticket#? I could take a look into it.
The only thing that Pimax suggested was to upgrade ‘Play’ to 1.43.6. But no difference. The Pimax is in its box ready to be returned to the seller. What a shame! See my recent post in the General section. Pimax support ticket #121406 and 121172.
If so, I’ll ask the support team to expedite the return and refund process.
About the floor resetting , I just never room calibrate and yes steamvr is not correct, but I just reset in-game and all is good. That is for seated games. For non-seated games that may be another story not sure. Aside from lens distortion depending on how you position it on your face , I am super happy with my super uw! I too come from quest3 and the super is simply in another league
OK. I have a 5090 and the super 57pp version. I already have the quesy 3. It might act the way you claim on some games, but with flight simulators no comparison. So much better clarity.
The only thing better would be the handtracking. Quest has good handtracking oh, and pass through cameras. Those are important but not more so than clarity.
Regarding hand tracking, our engineers are refining both the motion and the underlying algorithms.
There’s no confirmed timeline for public release yet, but when it’s ready, we’ll likely roll it out as a beta feature first to collect feedback from users.

“The contrast is far too intense on the Super, the whites glare and bleed over” – it seems that some Supers are like that (but they have higher brightness, which is great, and colours can be tweaked in settings). The two 50ppd Supers that I tried had “normal” colours out of the box, but unfortunately were not very bright (though still brighter than Q3 or OG Crystal).
-
50ppd and UW are disproportionally demanding, unfortunately. Like they can give you +50% clarity at the cost of +150% GPU demand. With a 3090 you can still run some well optimised VR games and apps, but you have to be selective. Was SteamVR home environment looking good?
-
Room position and floor level keep resetting to a wrong value every time you take off the headset – yes, that’s a very annoying feature of Pimax Play software at the moment.
-
Colour fringing – yes, this imperfection exists.
-
Shaking in some games – unclear if it relates to tracking problems or to something else.
Returned the Crystal Super UW to my seller, and just received email. They tested it and were having same issues, and confirm it was indeed faulty.
I had a similar experience.. and I’ve got a 9800X3D with a 5090 and 64G of RAM. The UW is just a dud. In addition to all of that, the left side hinge on mine started to break, as others on Youtube have pointed out. I returned the headset for a refund as well. Considering the Dream Air, but likely not.. It’s a very expensive purchase and I’m pretty concerned about quality / longevity of Pimax products now.
