Crystal Super - Great optics - shame about the quality

I have both a Crystal Light and a Crystal Super.

I have no problem with the optics but I struggle with the poor built quality, and overall reliability of the products. Both sets have had their problems and the most recent one is that the Super headband comes adrift from its mountings, as the tiny retaining screw falls out.

The first time this happened, one of the speaker wires came out in the process. It has happened again today (the wire is OK this time) and I am not amused!

Why does Pimax insist on using flimsy plastic and the smallest of screws, whether to hold the headband or even the speakers? Larger and better-secured screws can hardly add that much weight or cost.

This time the mounting itself got damaged (I tried to use some thread-lock) but I was unable to establish a ticket because the opportunity to “submit” the ticket through Pimax Play gets replaced by “next”. On selecting “next”, the dialog box just goes blank. Not good enough Pimax!

I have instead emailed “support” although I have no idea if my email will be acted upon.

I have to agree, one of my controllers came assembled not lined up, and there are jagged razor sharp plastic slivers that should have been cut off from the molds that were not and when i went to use the controller it gave me a nice cut. also the mura is just awefull how can ya call its crystal when it looks like there is a window screen that i am looking out of. I have contacted support on this and they are sending me a replacement controller and image engine but from what im reading the mura is a problem on pretty much every single unit. not good

Sorry to hear of your experience.

At least it sounds as if once you have been able to make contact with Pimax, they seem to take action. This has been my experience too (on several occasions - through necessity), although this time around, I have not been able to even raise a ticket through the usual channels.

As you say, the mura is not great, either.

In spite of my experience to date, I will almost certainly adopt the micro-OLED version, which should kill-off the mura and provide the best image available today. I just hope that it doesn’t fall apart, be faulty or go wrong, like my present headsets have …

Good luck with your replacements!

I’m new to VR. I’m a flight simmer and making the move to VR with a Crystal Light was (was) the best thing I did. I enjoyed 13 days of good experience but then, 4 days after paying the final installment, my headset developed a Display Port Connection Fault. I’ve been round in circles removing and updating GPU driver, Pimax Play, headset firmware swapping to other DP, swapping USB port. Cleaning with contact cleaner and reconnecting all wires. Wasted about 3 hours over 2 days and achieved nothing. Conclusion, the DP cable must have a fault.

Looked on Pimax website to try to find a replacement cable loom. All those accessories are out of stock. That doesn’t bode well… Has everyone had to replace them? idk but now I have a very expensive paper weight.

The way I see it is this headset is a modular, adjustable, modifiable device. This means that it makes sense to give it a once over tightening any screws on it. Also this means after a few months active play it should have maintenance done on it, which would include cleaning and tightening of the screws. Most of the failures I have seen are from screw loosening after continuous use. Anytime I have purchased a device over a certain “threshold” of price, it comes with some form of maintenance. Personally I think they should include that in a pamphlet or something explaining proper device care.

An interesting point of view, and one with which I cannot totally disagree.

I am not sure this alters the fact that the screws used to hold the head-strap on are absolutely tiny; similarly for the speakers. One might go as far as to question their fitness for purpose.

Incidentally, I probably only use VR for something like an hour per flight (MSFS), with perhaps 10 fixed wing flights per week. I always set up my planes on-screen, before switching to VR.

So I am not a “heavy” user of this hardware and neither am I jumping around with it. On this basis, I feel that the equipment has had pretty light use and should neither come apart, nor need a great deal of maintenance over the six months or so that I have owned it.

Update on my Display Port Connection, Pimax Support got back to me within a couple of days after I raised a ticket. The solution in my instance was to roll back to a GPU driver a couple of versions older. It’s now working again. (AMD RX 7900 XT, driver version 25.9.2)

Hi, I sympathize with your issue as my 1st Super headset, back in August last year, continually fell apart. It was always the left side screw at the pivot point near the DP cable, disconnecting the sound cable also. I re-tightened it so many times that it was damaged. Pimax did send me a replacement and I purchased some Blue Loctite and immediately coated the tiny screws on each side. It has now been a month and I think it is solid. I saw there was a very small amount of blue adhesive on each screw, however not enough and I suspect it may be low quality as it opened very easily. If it does come apart again I will apply Red Loctite, the strongest and more permanent. It does appear to be a Quality Control issue imho.
