Can't Play Elite Dangerous?

Sure hoping someone could help me figure out what idiotic mistake I’m making, but I cannot get Elite Dangerous to start in my Pimax 8kx. It starts fine in the Rift S still. When I go to My Games and click on Start, it brings up the Elite Dangerous Launcher but when I press play, nothing happens. I tried maybe pressing Start again in the pitool after the launcher loads but that just gives me the error that only one launcher may run at a time. Files have been validated and everything is up to do. My current thinking is something is tying Elite to the Rift S because I did buy it through the Oculus store, and maybe I just can’t run it through the Pimax?. Any clue what’s going on here?

After you click PLAY for the launcher - lift your 8KX a bit, so you can see the desktop, there you will see the ED window - click PLAY there

I’m not sure, but is it possible that you have installed a Rift-only version?

Do you use ED Profiler? The first time I got Elite to start in VR was by using that.

Also, after you have clicked start and nothing is happening, have you tried alt-tabbing to see if there is a hidden active window somewhere?

Have you tried starting Elite in flat-screen mode (but with the 8KX connected and PiTool running) and going into Elite’s own graphic options to see what it says under 3D options?

@mobo13 The ED launcher comes up with the 4 options, ED Horizons, ED, Combat Arena, etc but after pressing play there, play disappears for a few seconds then comes back with nothing happening.

@neal_white_iii I really hope not. Hoping maybe there’s a way to get it from steam without paying $60 considering I’ve bought it for both Xbox and PC

@Troz ED Profiler didn’t work as the exe is in an Oculus subfolder and the Profiler doesn’t recognize the path. No hidden window after using Alt-Tab either. The only for me to launch desktop mode is through the Oculus launcher and it does work, which really makes me think the VR mode is locked to the Oculus somehow.

The help is much appreciated though.

I’m wondering if anyone else on here has ED through the Oculus store and has gotten it to work?

Make sure your SteamVR is launching with ED. When you click on SteamVR in PE, then click on ED icon - see if both options are checked at the bottom to apply both profiles (ED and SteamVR). Then, if you click PLAY in PE it should launch SteamVR automatically. BTW, do you have both exe added to PE: one for ED and one for ED Launcher?

@mobo13 When choosing ED in PE, I can select Apply Settings Profile, but not Apply Steam Optimization Profile, because it says that option is not available for Oculus titles. The only exe I have for ED itself, separate from the launcher exe, is in the Oculus folder, and when it is executed I get a msg saying to only run it through the launcher. I’m giving up for the night, thanks for all the help, I have a feeling I’ll be buying ED for the 3rd time through Steam soon…

It might be worth asking Frontier Support if they would transfer your license (and CMDR history) to a standalone version. You never know.

Also, you might want to add a non-steam game (your Oculus ED) to your Library in Steam client itself. I believe I had to do that and I added both the ED exe and the ED Launcher exe there before I opened PE.

In the past Frontier did allow for such transfer w/o charging costs. But I would have thought that the PiTool version of Revive (baked into PiTool) should allow exactly for Oculus only titles to be played with Pimax headsets…

That’s what I thought, but I think you’ve got to start the game from within PiTool for that to work. (I’ve never played any Oculus games, so I’m unsure.)

The odd thing is I bought both Beat Saber and Skybox from Oculus and they work fine. I really think it has something to do with the ED launcher being tied into Oculus somehow.

@mobo13 I’ll try that when I get home from work, thanks!

Got it working! Was able to obtain a Steam product key from Frontier, downloaded the game from steam and ran the game through Steam VR instead of Oculus. Thanks for the help everyone!

I’m glad you could get it working. I’m a big ED fan and actually bought my headsets (8K and 8KX) mostly to play ED. It looks great on the 8KX btw, but imo, it needs a high level of super sampling to look good. That’s why I’m currently using the in-game “VR Medium” setting to lower many of the graphics options, since I only have a 2080.

@neal_white_iii I’m gonna get into this weekend so I have time to enjoy it, It’s been a few months since I’ve hopped into the Diamondback. I’m running dual 2080s but I don’t think ED or Pimax supports SLI in VR mode, it’s my first time running more than one card and I’m still figuring it out. I’ll report back when I get it looking good, will be great to be back in the black!

ED does not support SLI (in VR or not). I also have a 2080. To me (as an Explorer) the most important thing is high res, not framerate. The following info should save you a bit of time, by providing a starting point for your settings.

In ED I’m using VR Medium, but with Super Sampling set to 1.0. In PiTool, I’m using Native res, Normal FOV, Render Quality 2, no FFR “close”, enabled Parallel Projections, Smart Smoothing ON, enabled Hidden Area Mask, Contrast +1, and Brightness -1. I’ve got SteamVR Resolution per eye at 50% (6468x6268). Your res might very; it’s dependent on Vertical Offset in PiTool and mine is not set to 0.

In the opening hanger, I get ~40 fps, but with smart smoothing, it’s fine.

I actually tried that and didn’t get any performance increase. I wonder why?
