I don’t play games, but I love to watch 3D movies and VR videos with my recently acquired Crystal Super. The picture clarity is really top notch. I totally enjoy the great upgrade.
However, there had been a problem bugging me for several weeks: the sudden stuttering.
Imagine when you move your head, the transition should be smooth, and image shouldn’t have double ghosts, but from time to time, I would see this kind of things, and when it happened, if I keep rotating my head, the double ghosting stutter would not stop until my head stop moving. It’s a very disturbing problem.
So I tried everything I could to fix it. I switched on and off every setting I could see, I used different OpenXR runtimes, and raise the priority of pimax tasks… etc. Sometimes the problem seemed to be fixed, like there was once I changed the light frequency from Auto to 50hz, the problem had reduced to minimum. Yet on the second day it came back again.
I have a Geforce 3090Ti. It’s not the latest but it should be powerful enough to drive 4800x4800 per eye resolution, and I was not even playing games, just VR players. More ridiculously, even after I lowered the resolution to 1900x1900 per eye, this problem could still happen.
Tonight I finally figured out the solution by doing these:
- Turn on the recline mode and controllerless mode. Use a xbox gamepad for DeoVR.
- Put stickers on all 4 tracking cameras to completely block them
Now I can enjoy every video in DeoVR without the annoying stuttering problem, even at high resolution (7000x7000). The only side effect is that occasionally there is a small jump in the orientation, seems like the headset is resetting to vertical center. That’s tiny compared to the previous stuttering.
My conclusion to this strange fix, is that Pimax’s motion tracking is still not good enough. Somehow once it loses the tracking while your head is moving, it will be always 1 step behind your head motion, so as long as your head is moving, you will keep seeing that double or triple ghosting.
