So much discussion of image comparisons but not so much on performance capabilities of the two. Can any of you owners of the 8k experiment and comment on performance while running demanding racing sims? In particular rFactor2. If you don’t have that one installed (not the most common sim used though it is excellent) then Project Cars 2 would suffice. I think is is similar in it’s GPU demand.
The default claim is that the 5k+ is less of a GPU burden because of the SS up-scaling burden supposedly required of the 8k. But the 8k only requires 80Hz. And is the up-scaled SS really still necessary? I read that PiTools has made improvements but do they significantly reduce the needed SS for the 8k? And will Pimax give us the reduced FPS options they teased us with a few weeks ago? Many questions that would require a lot of tinkering.
I’ve been waiting for SweViver to do more performance check-out runs on his 1080ti system (not is 2080). He said he would be doing this sometime but he is really busy and has his own program agenda and real life to deal with that may not get me the answers I seek soon enough. I’m backer 6000+ and felt no urgency until Pimax sent out the email telling me to make THE decision.
So… any car sim racers out there willing to share your experiences and advice regarding the 8k with a 1080ti? If so please run it with typical in-race conditions. By which I mean with, say, 10-15 opponents on the grid and running for about 1-2 laps until the field spreads out and the GPU burden is reduced.
@Sweviver If you read this, any chance of doing this in the next couple of weeks?
I wonder how long I can hold off on committing to Pimax?
Edit: And what about this parallel projection thing?.. Is is required for rFactor2? (or PC2 if that is what you run?) I read that it is a big FPS drag.
Redout & Vector 36 are quite demmanding. Performance on both is about the same.
Distance runs very well.
You need to tweak settings to find what works best for you.
on a 1080ti generally bounces between 70 & max. Though Redout in my earlier tests haven’t found magic settings yet.
Generally performs well otherwise well.
I think but could be wrong @industria might be a simmer. There is a discussion in general showcasing sim setups. They might be abke to give a better idea.
I do not have rfactor but pc1,pc2,ac,lfs,raceroom,dirt and of course iracing.
I tried only ac so far because it does not need parallel projection enabled and therefore is running quite well.
I will try tomorrow pc2 and let you know asap.
The parallel projection thing is really annoying, but a price to pay for early fov adopters
Btw., tried seeking dawn in low fov mode and i am really impressed with the still huge fov in comparison with vive or rift or odyssey…
For me the biggest question is if the low fov setting is enough to get a glimpse in the mirrors while driving to be aware of somebody attacking from behind. I will test that.
Iam not professional but Iam actually uploading a video with 6 games recorded in 4K thru the lens.
Will be available here is a few hours here -> https://youtu.be/zzXS6hx5vK4 (yeah uploading the french version also so it take time…no fiber )
You might want to try UserBenchMark.com They have a free utility and it offers recommendations as to how to improve it. It will rank your system against other similar ones.
I was looking at Blue room scores on 3dmark. It seems comparing to other 1080Ti system, my CPU is definitly bottlenecking my GPU but not by that much. VR is more GPU heavy. 2080Ti scores are much much higher
Actually, I just re-ran it, to get a link to a report and discovered that something is amiss. My CPU and RAM scores have dropped 20-30%, since the last time I ran it. I’ll need to investigate.
It showed me my OC’ed 4770k holds 1080Ti by about 9% which from the comparison of blue room score with others seems to be in the ball park. But in the end, I still want to see a FPS number to see if my setup can run 5K+ at 90hz
I just did Project Cars 2 on my 8K, and i got between 75 and 80 frames the whole time (Normal FOV) with the small FOV i got a contant 80 FPS. don’t ask me about the settings, i only did SteamVR to 106% (uhhm, now that i start steamVR again its on 68%, each eye 3655x3219), and i have a 2080Ti/6700K/16GB. for PC2 i had to turn on parallel projection in PiTool settings. looked amazing i can see so far away now compared to the original Vive.
