I agree, although I would use the word cockpit games instead of sim games. As I don’t believe the game has to be realistic to be immersive.
What confuses me a bit are people that talk about how VR doesnt have its killer app yet, and I’m like “VR has had killer apps since 2016, they are called Project Cars, Elite Dangerous etcetera”
To me the biggest thing im looking forward to with the large FOV is being able to drive a vehicle in VR with full range of vision.
Here are some additional pics and videos from the event.
After seeing how things were set up wrt settings, I felt that Pimax would actually be made to look bad so I didn’t bother recording much in the way of user reactions. Sorry Pimax, but you really should vet these kinds of events to ensure a good setup before the start.
I did get a good clip of Kevin Henderson (Pimax US) replying to questions regarding HMD build quality and Pimax’s willingness to do right by the backers when it comes to resolving these issues. Also met @Heliosurge and had a good conversation with him, but the resulting video wasn’t good due to my concentrating on hearing him over the din rather than the videography.
Edit: Not sure why the videos aren’t playing yet through the posted links. Maybe because they were just uploaded - I’ll try again tomorrow, if they don’t work by then. Interestingly, if you take the links and use them in another tab, the videos play.
Your Video links looks good now. And yes it has been said I need more volume levels. Granted it was loud there as well at times.
The relaxation demo definitely seems to need program tweaking for pimax headsets. Though maybe small FoV might have rendered as intended without the glitches observed.
Helio thanks for all the great work you are doing. You are a true fan of VR. Can you please tell pimax they need to up the IPD to 78-80mm. 72 is very low for a max value. as i mention berfore when i tried the 8k everthing seemed fine on max ipd but on the 5K+ i felt eyestrain. on the vive i am okay at 75mm with no straining. i measured my ipd with a ruler and by the looks of it my IPD is 78-80 “my big head” lol.
Hope this doesn’t sound picky but in the above video with Helio & Kevin he mentioned the percentage of backers reporting faults is low at 3% or so. If half the 6000 backers have headsets does that sound correct at about 100 reported faults?
I guess as long as you’re not one of the unlucky hundred thats probably an acceptable failure rate all things considered being new small company doing cutting edge tech etc. Just hope they cut that percentage way down before shipping preorders as we’re paying a lot more and might get angry. Anyway I’m happy to take Kevin at his word and expect good things in the coming months.
yeah but considering how finicky getting the ipd and verticle license alignment is, i was surprised how little the staff actually knew.
My first 5k+ demo i asked where the ipd alignment was and the girl had no idea. And my view was completely distorted.
my second attempt i dialed it in myself and it was great. Im wondering how many people we unimpressed with the headset due to it not being set up correctly for their faces.
Hi G-Maniac. I just thought I’d clarify a bit. First - as I mentioned in the video all devices with manufacturing defects will be taken care of and the goal should always be zero defects. We all know zero defects isn’t possible so the next best thing is maximizing the speed we can arrange repairs and replacements. This will continue to improve as we implement local support infrastructures. I just wanted to stress people should at least give a little consideration to anecdotal reports vs. actual reports. Anecdotal reports often lead to a belief that issues are far more endemic than they really are.
On the defect rate let me clarify a little. I mentioned two numbers, reports on housings and overall reports. Defects are analyzed and flow to the production and engineering staff to ensure the same issues don’t repeat themselves moving forward. While we might compare favorably to other complex device launches the number is still too high.
We are all very thankful we have backers and customers who are behind us to such a degree that when a problem does appear they are willing to both work with us trying to find the cause and stomach the burden of the dreaded wait for a replacement.
Well said Kevin, you certainly seem to be doing a great pr job. Like it’s been said many times on these forums and reddit, a little bit of intelligent communication goes a long way to allay peoples fears. I’m sure most backers/buyers are right behind you and understand there will be teething problems. Don’t burn yourself out, I’ve got a feeling Pimax is going to have a busy year.
