Base Stations: Can't get both to connect to headset at the same time

I’ve been away from VR for a long time, and I’m trying to get started again. I have a 5K+ as an original backer and I’m using Vive 1.0 base stations. They’re set up on channels b and c, and they both recognize each other with solid green lights.

The problem is that when I start up PiTools or Pimax Play (I’ve tried both) I can only get one base station to connect and show a solid green light in the app. The other base station has a blinking light. I’ve been doing google searches for two days, trying all of the suggestions I’ve found, but the best I’ve been able to achieve is that the tracking base stations will switch, that is, one will connect and the other will be blinking, or vice versa, the one that wasn’t connecting will connect but then the one that was connecting will be blinking. I can never get both to work at the same time.

The fact that they recognize each other and have a solid green light, and also the fact that either one of them will connect with the headset seems to indicate that this is not a hardware problem, but something on either the Pimax or SteamVR end (but I understand I may be wrong). I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled both apps, with no success.

Does anyone have suggestions? Has anyone seen a situation where one station works, but not the other, and they SWITCH which one is working? Please help.

Do you have the sync cable?

No, I don’t.

That being said, wouldn’t the solid green light they each have indicate that they’re in sync with each other? It seems the problem is getting both of them to recognize the headset.

Ok, now I do have a sync cable, and the problem persists. The stations show solid green lights, but in the Pimax Play UI I can get either base station to track the headset, but not both, even WITH the sync cable.

I don’t have a base station, so I have no idea about the setup. I am curious about your issue, though…

I just put your post into Google’s AI… “The stations show solid green lights, but in the Pimax Play UI I can get either base station to track the headset, but not both, even WITH the sync cable.” It mentioned something about the stations being on the same channel when they should be on different channels…

Check the Base Station Channels

The most common cause of this issue is both base stations defaulting to the same channel. [1]

  1. Look at the small channel indicator letter on the front/back of each base station.

  2. If using Base Station 1.0s with a sync cable: One must be set to A and the other to B.

  3. If using Base Station 2.0s: Set them to unique channels, such as b and c.

  4. How to change it: Press the recessed channel button (usually located on the back of the station) with a pin or paperclip until the correct letter displays. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Clear Pimax and SteamVR Configuration

Pimax Play and SteamVR might have cached the tracking data incorrectly or have conflicting channel setups. [1]

  1. Exit both Pimax Play and SteamVR completely.

  2. Navigate on your PC to: C:\ProgramData\pimax\runtime\config\lighthouse

  3. Delete all the files in this folder.

  4. Open Pimax Play, make sure Lighthouse Tracking is enabled, and then click Restart Service. [1, 2, 3]

Re-run Room Setup

If the channels are correct and cache files are cleared, recalibrate your playspace to force a fresh sync between the devices.

  1. Make sure your headset is connected and powered on.

  2. First, complete the room setup within Pimax Play.

  3. Next, open SteamVR, navigate to the developer or room setup settings, and run the SteamVR Room Setup. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Yeah yeah, I’ve been doing the same thing, asking different AI models to help me out, and being shown the same stuff that AI showed you. Thank you for doing that.

It’s something deeper. Some setting in an obscure file. Perhaps a hardware issue (but I doubt it). I keep trying things each day for hours, but always the same result of one station works or the other, but never both.

Update: After the sync cable didn’t work, I got more desperate. I took down one of the stations mounted to the wall and moved it to a completely new position, sitting on the top of a couch, just to see what would happen. The result was both base stations solidly tracking each other and the headset. That told me it was POSSIBLE (something I didn’t know back when I thought it was either a hardware or software problem).

I put the base station back on the wall where it was, and adjusted it slightly, like a few degrees, and everything was fine. I don’t know why that worked. The whole time I had been experimenting to get it workingI had been changing the channels on the base stations and bumping them into new positions, but none of that had caused it to work. This did.

I’m boggled, but it’s working.
