Yeah price definitely is a thing, it’s expensive for sure. Then again, people have no problem coughing up $1200-$1800 for an iphone or even more for a macbook. So in theory if they could release a good headset at that pricepoint it should be attainable for a lot more people. But still, although I love VR so much myself and clearly still have hope it will become mainstream, man, sometimes I kinda start to doubt it … It’s all taking WAY longer than I had hoped and every time that it seems that it’s FINALLY going to take off, it just doesn’t…
It’s 11 years since the DK1 release date now and although VR is a bit more popular, in reality it actually didnt gain much traction ever since then …
It is a worry. Apart from price I thing FOV is the next big factor. I don’t think people like feeling closed in with 90 degrees of restricted vision. It’s too claustrophobic for many. If we had 180 FoV as standard then I’m sure everyone who put a vR headset on would be wowed and couldn’t go back to monitors. Devs would feel confident supporting VR and VR would take off in the same way LCD screens did for mobile phones.
It a travesty Pimax can’t bring a new wide FoV headset under 1k in price.
Well yes and no. Sure I would have loved more FoV but then again if you mod it and get a bit closer to the panels it feels like quest 3 fov which I can live with. But yeah I agree to really hit home with the general public, more fov would definitely help
I reckon if Apple prioritised FOV over everything else they would have had far more sales. Eye tracking and FOV would have been a must have headset and justified the price and would of left Zuckerberg with his jaw on the floor. Lol
There’s still hope for Pimax, scratch that. There’s still hope for Somnium, scratch that, erm, Valve….? Lol
Could afford AVP but it’s not arrived here in UK yet, no demo, no purchase. And not sure what I’d do with it? I’m looking forward to visiting the apple store one day and trying it out.
My PC set-up is similar price to AVP, my VR equipment about the same money again, but both offer me great value with the PC obviously being multi purpose, and the VR just amazing with it’s many games, tracked motion controllers and vive trackers for full body tracking
For watching movies and binge watching TV show I’d rather spend time with my wife on the sofa enjoyed my home cinema system which is similar money to AVP
Yeah I wish I could say that using the avp beats using a pc but at least in my experience that’s not true, I’m more productive with a pc. I guess though that it might beat a laptop in some cases, depending what you use it for. Then again for half of the price of the avp you can get a high end laptop
This is why the argument against PCVR is strange because if you remove the headset you have an amazing gaming class PC for many purposes including Dev work, image editing, video editing, writing (I write all my Skarredghost articles on my PC).
It’s much easier for me to justify buying a top end GPU for my PC because it makes an immediate difference to my VR and all other activities
It begs the question why not have all the compute off the headset in a laptop that you wear with the battery in a backpack. I think thats what Valve is looking at with the next SteamDeck.
Greentrailmix on Discord has experimented with the 5kS on the Godwin mini laptop. Iirc it uses either an apu to be step down or up from the Steamdeck. He has had promising results.
Valve this is very likely as they have made a SteamLinkVR ap.
Have you tried working with a Mac/PC mirrored to your AVP yet?
Works amazingly well and with the ability to surround yourself with additional apps, I find it hard to conceive of a more productive working environment.
No, literally the only Apple device I own is the AVP. My wife and kids have iphones though. I’ve always stuck to Android myself
But yeah maybe in combination with other apple products you can get some productivity out of it. Too bad they locked android/windows users pretty much out.
Most straightforward way if Sunshine is set up correctly (make sure to use HEVC) is to open moonlight (make sure to use the TestFlight beta for VisionOS) and before connecting to your desktop, click on settings in the bottom left.
There you can set as high a resolution and refresh rate as you want, I have it set to 4K and get a crystal clear desktop.
Haha not sure how I missed that I was thinking I needed to configure the server part, didnt even see the settings in the moonlight client. Thanks @twack3r this is pretty damn amazing indeed. I can totally see how a combination of a laptop or even a small portable PC without physical monitor, and the AVP is awesome when you’re travelling for example. Or even at home, I must say it’s quite impressive indeed!
Really good tip, thanks!! BTW did you ever find a good way to create a new facial interface? I’m still struggling with that.
Interesting! I saw something similar from another user, yours looks definitely nicer though! I’m myself actually more looking for a VR solution, so something to completely seal of light leaks. Currently I’m using the AVP without the facial interface, but with just the foam, which I try to keep pressed between my head and the AVP. Kinda works but of course light still leaks and it’s a bit of a hassle to put it in place everytime I put on the headset. But the FoV is way bigger like that so I definitely enjoy it.
Interesting, if they can keep visual fidelity as good as the AVP then it’s going to be very cool. I’m just hoping they’re not opting for LCD panels for example.
