Innovating is hard. You run into problems nobody else has encountered, or even thought about. But innovation is necessary — it’s how progress happens, for all of us. And for each of these problems, a solution can be found, and we’re still left with the fruits of that innovation and the progress it brings.
The Crystal Super is the world’s first VR headset with a swappable optical engine. When we announced this in 2024, many people were skeptical — but we have turned many of those around. The Crystal Super supports four optical engines: the 50 PPD, 57 PPD, the Ultrawide, and the micro-OLED (which shares its optical stack with the Dream Air). The swappable optical stack not only allows for this flexibility, but also opens the door to easier upgrades in the future, as well as quick repairs.
However, one key component — the 70-pin connector — has been discontinued by its supplier. This is a challenge we already flagged last year in relation to the Lighthouse Faceplate connector (read more here).
We have allocated all remaining stock of this connector to the Crystal Super to ensure compatibility with all optical engine variants. Because the Crystal Super remains in high demand — both as a complete headset and as individual optical engines — we want to make sure the production can meet the demands of both new and previous variants.
As a result, we have switched to a new connector from a new supplier. This new connector is not compatible with the original 70-pin connector, which means there will be two variants of the Crystal Super (and its optical engines) in production and circulation.
What this means to you:
-
If you purchased a complete headset — you don’t need to worry. Your headset and optical engine are factory-matched at the time of production, and both go through the quality checks together.
-
If you need to purchase a new separate optical engine — please provide your headset’s serial number when ordering, following Pimax’s official purchase guidelines. We will ship the optical engine that matches your headset’s connector type.
-
For after-sales and repairs — we have maintained ample inventory of primary power supply connectors for older units, ensuring that all after-sales needs for existing equipment can be met normally. You don’t need to worry about future maintenance. Also, customers who purchased second-hand optical engines and encounter compatability issues, can contact our customer support for a solution.
This change is a necessary response to a supply chain challenge, and our goal remains the same: to keep delivering stable, reliable products to all of you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our customer support team.
