8kX - first impressions

That’s not good. I want to play for hours, not minutes. I wonder if we will need to risk some DIY ventilation holes in the headset.

I’m trying to think of solutions one of them being just buying a tablefan to see if that can potentially help, I’m not sure whether this only applies to me or the rest of the X users. I’ll try to tag as many of them to see. I know @Darkcyde and I have the same experience.

@coverman @evertec @Genesis @Chucksta @Fresco @lampodiluce (If I miss anyone tag them)

Do you guys also notice this , ‘HMD gets quite hot on the top side, just to the left of the central head strap.’

I already use a powerful room fan. It’s right next to my desk, where I play seated VR games. I already have trouble with heat, sweat, and fogging with my 8K. I’m definitely worried if the 8KX runs hotter (and it’s likely it does).

Has @SweViver mentioned anything about extra heat coming from the 8kx in his YouTube video’s?

Will specifically pay attention to this next time. Wasn’t immediately apparent to me, but I wasn’t looking for it either.

It’s true that the left side heats up a bit, but I don’t think it causes damage or failure.
The heat of the GPU is incomparably hot, and when I play VR games, I keep the entire room air-conditioned.
It is very good to modify to improve heat dissipation and cushioning.

Mine also heats up, never noticed this with 5k+.

I’m just paranoid as hell. Hopefully it’s something that can be fixed. I just notice it gets noticably hotter than my 5K+.

will have to look into water cooling the face padding

I think that’ll be a really bad idea… Condensation

well, i wasn’t entirely serious  but if i was going to implement something it would be an ambient temperature thing. like threading a tube through the face foam hooked up to a pump and radiator. so no condensation. and hopefully no leaks…

I didn’t think so either…

Clever

I would probably do something like what Kiwi has done for the Quest (works really well and no light bleed):
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B082X55S92

Due to the size of the cowling (Comfort Kit) on the Pimax headsets there could probably be vents both in the top and bottom (maybe even on the sides too)…

hah, i think i’ll try my hands at 3d printing something like that if it’s a problem. i mean the cowl is cheaper to ruin than the headset but still not free.

Definitely…! It would be awesome. I really need to get myself a 3D-printer…

My experience with the heat issue, is that it’s not too hot to touch, but way hotter than something like a mobile phone gets with prolonged use. I did find that by holding my hand on the hot part, it did seem to cool down a bit fairly quickly, so that ‘watercooling’ idea mentioned above, may not be such a bad one!

Seriously though, I didn’t notice if it was hotter in one mode over the other (native v upscaled), although I would have expected it to be hotter in upscaled, as the internals are having to do more work. I’ll have to run more tests, but without a proper thermometer, results would be subjective.

Tried it out, the area you mention is indeed the one where it get’s warmest. Might be a little warmer than the 5k+, but it’s not really uncomfortably or concerningly hot. (No comparison to e.g. holding the hand into the air stream of the ventilation output of my GPU).

@Darkcyde: Have been testing in native mode. Yepp, perhaps a good explanation, slightly above average use mobile phone temperature. That said: When using my S6 (or even more the Note 4) for GearVR it gets a lot hotter than the 8kX.

json (javascript objects) for non-programmers.

The settings seem to be heavily underdocumented. The most official thing I could find is this: steamvr.vrsettings - Valve Developer Community. Which doesn’t even contain the maxRecommendedResolution option, nor any json schema. And it still mentions that the file is in the steam config folder (well, it is, that one is just not used…)

That’s imho concerning with SteamVR. HMD developers outside of Valve have to rely on something that they cannot influence. And Valve doesn’t seem to care much about HMDs that they don’t build.
On the other side: If we would be restricted to games that were programmed against the Pimax SDK then, well, we could spend our time on the Pimax Home screen…
We need a standard here that is not in the hand of only one manufacturer.

Well, I did say it was just my experience. The mobile I have is a few years old (the company doesn’t even make phones anymore) and I rarely use it for long periods, but when I do, it hardly gets warm at all. Sometimes it gets hot fast charging, but still not as hot as my 8K-X is getting. I’ve not used recent Samsung’s, so I have no idea how hot they get.

Also, temperature can be subjective to each person. One may find it hot and another not so (as it seems between us). For example, I have a friend who can drink freshly made coffee without a problem (yeah, WAY hot!) but I have to let mine cool for a while or it burns me.

Hi,

How about attaching one of those stick on alumin(i)um heat sinks, which are sometimes used inside computers to the hot area to help dissipate the heat?
Just a thought.
