8kX - first impressions

The vrnchill thing was mentioned in another thread. Haven’t tried it, seems to work with Pimax headsets though.

I’m considering it, if you know where I can buy one of those things that looks like it will balance ontop of a Pimax headset let me know.

Hope this helps,

Werner

P. S. There are many different sizes of heat sinks on Amazon. You may have to figure out which one fits your needs best.

If heat is an intrusive issue for some, wait until the warranty expires, and if physically possible:

Open up the headset casing after locating the hot spot and use a mini craft tool to cut a hole and then internally, hot glue gun on a tiny ultra quiet low RPM fan inside, like a 5v 40mm Noctua fan. You’d need to find a power source internally or somehow mount a tiny battery that can be switched on/off outside the headset.

Failing that just drill holes on the hotpot area in a neat pattern.

I like that little fan. Rather than mounting it internally, I’m thinking about cutting channels in the facepad foam and/or comfort kit and using 1 or 2 of these fans to move cool air past your face. That should improve comfort and reduce sweating and fogging. If you aren’t going to use the bottom USB connector (like me), you can probably get your power from there.

your link’s fan is 12v though

There’s a 5 volt version which includes a USB adapter. Unfortunately, it’s not type-C, but there are adapters for that.

good idea, if not working properly and to much light comes in it can be covered with some black tape and in the worst case it’s a replaceable part that can be bought separately
maybe the “regular” eye tracking mod will help to vent it?

The design of the comfort kit isn’t doing the X any favors either. It covers almost your entire forehead, combine that with a physically hotter headset and its a recipe for a very uncomfortable experience. The VR N Chill fans that are recommended by Pimax too(After they cancelled there own fans) aren’t even compatible with the comfort kit either considering they are supposed to blow onto your forehead(which is now covered) and I dont see them doing much blowing onto the top of your head unless your completely bald…

If it didn’t take a million years to actually get a comfort kit I might have tried to buy a second one and try and cut holes into it like Neal mentioned. But for now something like this might work- https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SL4Z4HD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for the hint, didn’t have such a cooler design on the radar. Do you have experience how well this stays in position? So could one e.g. play sports games with that?

Hmm not sure about that, Its a hard plastic ring that just kind of sits on top of your shoulders, theres nothing to keep it into place and is somewhat heavy.

Ok, perhaps a standard stationary fan somewhere in front of oneself might be better for sports stuff then. Or to wait until winter

Fast hack: Many electronic heaters also have a ventilator level (where the heating part is disabled and it’s just blowing air around). Many might have such a thing at home as an emergency when heating doesn’t work in winter. Tried that out as ventilator - works, better than nothing.

Tks for your review on 8KX!

This is due to the added sharpness. I noticed a similar effect once I was able to use this 8kX at home - for the first 5 minutes the sweet spot seemed smaller, then I was able to adapt to the optics within a few hours, and the sweet spot seemed much larger than the 5k+ after that.

3 posts were split to a new topic: Why Lolof1 cancelled his 8KX order and went for the G2

Oh yes !!!

And it is the customers who pay the brunt as we say in France !!
In addition a very stubborn growth by Pimax:
I, who am a former salesperson, to offer so many VR headphones is absurd!
We must start with small production series of 1/2/3 maximum product, make pre-orders, request a deposit, limit production to a number that we can manufacture (1000 8kx no more), then deliver them right in time !

And if we have achieved this goal we start another production series!

The pimax has taken so many orders on a product in addition to not even finalize in development which is ultimately only delivered in droplets!

Thanks everybody for staying on topic.

Short update: Pimax has provided me some experimental firmware with 114 Hz for upscaling mode. The problems I had with 118 Hz mode are completely gone with that one, particularly for Eleven Table Tennis the experience with 114 Hz is noticably better than in 75 Hz native mode.
Did an A/B comparison between 114 Hz upscaling mode on the 8kX and 144 Hz mode on the 5k+ and couldn‘t see much of a difference (besides less SDE on 8kX obviously). Particularly for these games the 5k+ is still a great headset, but I think keeping both isn‘t necessary now anymore. In direct comparison the comfort kit with the MAS is definitely a big step forward, so for people who plan to stay with the 5k+ for the time being, this might be worth consideration.

I think with the beta firmware with the 114Hz the X is better in every way than all our previous headsets. As Noam says the only reason to hold onto a 5k+ was the high refresh rate but personally I can’t tell the difference in smoothness between 114 and 144 A/B. Visually the SDE and resolution on an X in 114Hz upscale mode is vastly better than my 5K+.
