impossible to compare if you do not state what is important for you. Refresh rate? sharpness/clarity? Why potato mode for Pimax hmds? Maybe the G2 is the better investment?
What is your gfx right now? What games you use it for?
I have a 1080ti but will get either an 8kx or 3080ti next in the coming months , I know how nice the 5k+ could be with a 3080ti and foveated rendering by testing at potato fov 144 hz with the 1080ti ,
Why would anyone get a one trick pony like the 8k+ over 8kx is beyond me so that’s why only the upscaled experience is relevant , the quality of the 4k 75hz is not in question ps already ordered G2
yes, biggest difference between 5k+ and 8kX upscaled is screendoor/Pixelfill. Huge difference. Look at Swevivers comparison Video. Everything there to make a decision.
But if the 5k+ is not a torment for you in that regard, keep it.

Sure but to me a high refresh is more immersive , my eyes relax
so I can imagine using 110hz a lot if I get an 8kx .
I’m probably getting one anyway but sensible to get a new graphics card first , 2080ti is overpriced small increase , I can imagine the 3080ti will be an arm and a leg too though
The 8KX has less SDE and 15% better panel utilization than your 5K+. Yes, the image will be softened by the upscale mode, but it should still look noticeably better.
The 8KX is more versatile, since you have the option of native mode, for times when the refresh rate doesn’t matter.
Your 1080Ti can drive the 8KX as well as it handles the 5K+ and will look better on the 8KX, even when upscaled.
It looks like the first generation of RTX 30xx GPUs will be built on Samsung’s 8nm process and will be power-hungry (350-400w). The refresh “super” parts should be available in the first half of 2021 and will use TSMC’s 7nm process, so they will be even faster and use noticeably less power. This is due to nVidia’s strong-arm tactics with TSMC, which appears to have backfired spectacularly.

Selling my old vr kit and gpu stuff is not really an option for me as I’ve dragged all 4 sons into vr and two are still students they get my old vr kit
But the 2080 is only a tiny bit faster than a 1080 Ti, unless you use foveated rendering. I’ve tried FFR and to me, it has horrible aliasing in the screen margins. It’s particularly noticeable in Elite Dangerous, which is my primary VR game. A 2080 Ti is ~30% faster than your 1080 Ti, but imo, isn’t worth the cost, although with new GPUs coming, you might be able to get it at a discount.
Here’s a particularly harsh result (the 1080 Ti beats the 2080):
After testing FFR Conservative, if I HAVE to boost my frame rate, I use Smart Smoothing. It just looks better and will run on a 1080. Generally, what I do is decrease the graphics settings (from ultra to high), in order to avoid using either FFR or SS.
…so the 5k+ that supposedly already was 15% better in that regard than the 8k, still had margins of unused screen at the top and bottom?
…or was that only compared to the original, pre-plus, 5k display panels, with the 5k+ and 8k panels being identical in size?
…in which case either both those older devices would have had that low utilisation, or the new ones have reduced FOV, with the top and bottom screen edges being visible within what is seen through the lens.
