VR News for 2025

But with eytracking a little bit (180euro) more

Its a shame, Bigscreen, Super, Shiftall - nothing has (HighRes) Passtrough
No Passtrough, no buy :frowning:

It’s been distorted for years because almost all high-res simmers avoid SteamVR.
I only use OpenXR standalone or in-game since 2-3years because SteamVR is slow.

Edit: Oh, and I completely forgot that Pimax HMDs like the 5k were recognized as HTC/Valve a few years ago and added to the list.
But I don’t know if that can still happen.

Pimax has a wonky structure. They seem to have on average 2 to 3 COOs all of the original members and many replacements have moved on.

What it seems were finally seeing is Robin is actually listening to the team’s input. Portal almost crippled them due to not being focused enough on the scrapped project originally started by Qualcomm.

Portal could have went somewhere but needed a manufacturer with proper vision and marketing. Instead it will be added to growing pile of incomplete pimax marketed products.

It’s not easy to navigate politics in a company and even worst when the top position is stubborn and inflexible a lot of the time. Jaap & Calvin seem to have good working knowledge of navigating these waters. Jaap also has a cool blog

Kevin is running his own company from my understanding as a distributor and looks is doing quite well with not solely focusing on pimax for revenue sources.

@Atmos with pimax only having one basket they need to develop new products all the time. Intel is another company like others in that space that need to constantly develop new products every year to stay a float. And we’ll look at Intel. They are in trouble the last few years and now doing a lot of layoffs etc…

The Super Light looks like a good headset but I still can’t get over the size of it. The 57PP module looks redundant and does anyone want to pay £400 more for OLED when the BSB2 is £1019?

Plus in Jaap video he states the Super has a FOV of 134 but Sebastian says it more like 124.

But for a Simner with a 4090 or 5090 it makes more sense.

BSB2 is the headset to beat.

I grabbed the opportunity and sneaked in for a short test of the Pimax Super, MeganeX 8K and BSB2.

Disclaimer: I used my glasses in the Super, which didn’t woirk with the two MicroOLED devices for obvious reasons. I also had short stints only so could not really focus on any more structured review, it was just to get a first look.

That said, it was the Super which left the best impression with me. The FoV is noticeably wider than with the BSB2, let alone the MeganeX. The picture was good: no SDE whatsoever (BSB2 was still visible with light background), colors where good, blacks I could not tell (I only tried DCS due to time constraints), no distortions or warping (latter was present for me in the MeganeX, but maybe my headset wasn’t properly setup for me - anmother bloke said he had the same until he pressed it into his face slightly, then it disappeared). Comfort seemed fine for a headset of this size.

As I am not eager to get me a tethered headset for roomscale VR now that I have my Quest 3, this headset would be used more in sitting/sim setup where I would not move my head too much nor bother that much about the tether.

So I will keep an eye on the Super but wait for the Deckard and then likely make a choice (ebtween two very different propositions, I fear).

Bottomline is that this time Pimax seemed to have gotten one decent headset to show off, and it was quite nice! (They had to pull two of the three headsets they brought along though with issues)

I think I’ve watched all of Sebs videos at the MRTV HQ. Sad to see the HQ be no more but what a send off. All the best headsets in one place.

Wow BSB2 sounds like it’s selling like hot cakes. I’m not surprised as it ticks nearly every box. Price, size, weight, edge to edge clarity, ease of use, etc.

I got a job at Pimax.

Interesting so is Robin &/or Nordic Stepping down? CEO is more than just got a job.

Definitely a positive move forward.

But the modular frame of the super should be kept with the PCL becoming an optic module as a refreshed PCL v2. It would help simplify production.

Only downside is it is Apr 1. :joy:

Indeed. Though even if a gag he is sending a message that will hopefully be received. Streamline things. The Prime thing though ppl have made a big deal out of it not seeing it is quite clever way at present to keep consumer price down with the split payment. Pay import in the base price vs total cost.

However it is a good point to simply Warranty by having 1 policy worldwide using the best practise.

That saves pimax money but the end users doesn’t see any savings. Why not make the whole headset free and pay purchase hire like buying a car? Doing half and half is too complex.

They do, they pay less import customs and with the incoming tariff that would be reduced too (main reason I imagine). But it does seem to have confused a lot of people so hard to say if it was the best approach.

Why not make the whole headset free and pay purchase hire like buying a car?

I would imagine that would cause a nightmare with people ordering the headset for free essentially, and then not bothering to return it or just mess about with it for a bit and return etc.

It does save consumers money. The import fees only applies to the base price along with Sales tax.

So for example with the US imposing Tarrifs it only applies to the base headset price vs being applied to the actual full price

Like with me being Canadian. I only pay tax on the base price vs paying also on the prime price.

Pimax have said they’ll absorb the extra 25% US Tarrif so no difference.

That’s only for a small number of folks that pre-ordered early before the tariffs were announced, customers after that date will have to pay it.

You still pay the original import fees & associated sales tax. And the additional US Tarrifs coverage is for pre orders. Eventually those will be additional cost
