I don’t claim to know how it works, but probably in Steam compatibility mode, Compass still does some compositing? @mixedrealityTV showed some screen mirrored footage for StarVR content in his review, however it was the showdown UE4 demo, not SteamVR content. I don’t know whether they can emulate the 4 viewport approach with OpenVR. I hope OpenXR will be the solution in the long run where we don’t need all these headset specific applications doing stuff in the background.
Appreciate the education! I noticed something similar on my Index and assumed it was the norm. It’s quite unfortunate that Pimax couldn’t/wouldn’t upgrade the lenses on the 8KX and take full advantage of the increased res, but I guess I understand why they didn’t. It is what it is I suppose. I’ll add my distortion findings to the review above. Probably the responsible thing to do for those considering this headset.
Pimax will always look for new ways to improve and create another model. What next? Oled isnt there. Fov is already huge. Resolution is already on the top level. Making a 8k-xxx version with new lences looks not a bad idea, but it cost will go up to 2000$.
I highly doubt that. What would be the variable production cost for the StarVR lens? I’d be surprised it it was more than $30. It’s the research that makes it expensive. But if you have somebody who explains everything and helps you out, for a fair price, I honestly don’t think it would need to cost that much.
I didnt said it will be manufacturing cost, i meant the headset cost will rise up to 2000$, due to ‘not so much important reasons’, just because no one gonna miss his chances to make money if they manage to build supperior lenses with no flaws. Its possible im wrong, but if i remember right there were lots of discussions about lenses back in days first 5k was developed, and people claimed that making something different to fresnel lens would cost many hundreds dollars only manufacturing cost. I can believe in this, in Germany for example it cost lots of money to make couple lenses for normal glasses. Considering VR glasses need much much bigger lenses of a very unique design - its can be a very challenging task.
Sebastian said the picture on his pre-production 8KX model felt like he was wearing someone else’s glasses. Does it feel like that for you?
You mean that Pimax COULD and thus probably would charge that? Maybe. Maybe not. I think the market for $2000 headset is substantially lower so they’d have to take that into consideration. Either way I’d buy, even for $2000
I can definitely see where he is coming from. I had a similar opinion until I did some additional testing (removed the face cushion/simulated a thinner one) and got everything properly fitted and dialed in. Now I only see a little bit of distortion around the edges and it’s only noticeable when I focus on it. That said, getting things dialed in can be a pretty finicky process…
Thankfully no one has an issue in any review of 8K-X but Sebastian.
He must have unfortunately received a faulty pre productiom unit and/or wasn’t able to try different depth face cushions, because he loved the ‘Artisan’ which is Pimax’s base model with much lower specification.
When I get mine, it’s always possible Sebastian and I will ironically share the same experiences, but so far this seems unlikely.
Would you be willing to share your settings for ED? I have PC config similar to yours and want to get the best visuals in the game. Thanks.
Non exactly accurate mass production reduce cost, equipment required to produce the 30$ lens cost a fortune and are amortize with many year of consummation.
I don’t trust people who get paid for reviews.
Sebastian had a conflict with Pimax(SweViver).
Unfortunately I think Sebastian will still say the same things when reviewing the final version of the 8KX. It’ll be something along the lines of the resolution is great, there’s no SDE, the MAS is a huge improvement, the audio is meh, the colors are ok, the distortion is still there, and that he still prefers the Index and G2.
Technically it will be correct and since he claims to be ‘independent’ with honest reviews - he should point good and bad things. Distortion is there. Saying its not there - would be a lie.
I’m obviously not sure about the coupon, but I would highly recommend going with the DMAS if you can. I did a bit more testing and I don’t think your going to get very good audio quality out of the SMAS. I mean, what do you expect out of a speaker that is roughly 1 1/2 inches/32mm in diameter?!? The good news is the SMAS speakers are removable with a single screw.
Do you get more that 5 FPS for this settings?
really , when ? ( 20 characters)
It was maybe a month or so ago now. He actually was talking about it being possible to eliminate distortions by making sure that the distortion profile algorithms were applied over the whole image or something like that. He seemed interested in looking into Pimax’s method. It seemed like it would have been good for Pimax to reach out to him but I don’t know if they ever did.
Please do my friend. I am very VERY much looking forward to your comparison of the two headsets and which one you feel is the superior experience. When do you anticipate getting your 8K-x? Are you among the first couple hundred backers?
